The Unexpected Palm Sunday
Last year at this time my Pastor’s Notes for Palm Sunday was entitled “The Unexpected King”. It was about how Jesus did not fit the description of a king, at least as people understood it at the time. Kings usually were expected to flaunt their wealth and power. They lived in the finest palaces, they held the greatest banquets and parties, they commanded armies, conquered other nations or kingdoms, and such things.
Jesus sharply contrasts with a kingly image: He owned no slaves, lived wherever He could lay His head, traveled mostly on foot, and He didn’t have much in the way of material wealth. This year we are living with a most unexpected set of circumstances. For us as Catholics, to be separated from one another seems to be the very opposite of the nature of the life of faith. To be Catholic is to live in a community, or at least it used to be. Community defines who we are. Some monastics and other religious withdraw from the secular world, but they still live in community with each other. Hermits are rare, and even they depend on a community for their survival.
The precise impact this “lock down” or “shelter at home” or quarantine way of life will have on us in the long run remains to be seen. We live with constant confusion, hearing good news, then bad news every day. Most of us, probably all of us, have never lived with or through anything like this in our lifetimes. It’s everywhere.
I believe that the best we can do is to follow the advice of the authorities. I believe they are learning from the situations in China and Italy, and our authorities are doing things the Italians and the Chinese wish they had done. We must slow down the spread of the virus as best we can. Otherwise, we will overwhelm our healthcare system’s capacity to treat the afflicted. That is a scenario no one wants.
The Lord has not abandoned anyone. No one is in trouble with God because they cannot come to mass and receive the sacraments. The Lord knows you’d be at mass if you could. We all have a responsibility to serve the common good, and under the current circumstances, staying home temporarily is the way to do it.
Although I’m now hearing that the Corona virus is here to stay, and that we will have to make adjustments accordingly, I firmly believe this pandemic will also pass. All the other pandemics did, and we have no reason to think this one won’t. Most people will not get the virus. Of those who do, most do not show symptoms. Of those who do show symptoms, most are not severe. Of those who have either mild or severe symptoms, most recover.
Some people ask whether we trust in God in a situation like this? “Mass should not be cancelled”, and “priests should defy their bishops,” they say, and “we should have mass regardless of the restrictions”. Do you lock your doors at night? Do you wear your seatbelt when you drive your car? Taking precautions in a pandemic does not mean you don’t trust God. It means you’re using the wisdom He gave you.
Be at peace this Palm Sunday, wash your hands and stay inside. God loves you! Amen.

CASINO
NIGHT
CANCELLED
It is with a sad heart that the need to cancel Casino Night, April 25, 2020 is upon us. Due to the Corona Virus and COVID-19 the world as we know it has changed temporarily. With God’s help and yours we will all get through this as a Parish/School Community.
We are considering having a Live and Silent Auction on-line. More information to come. As many of you know this is one of our major fundraisers that is needed for our operating budget. School and instruction to our students continue, just in a different way. School is open, just in a different way. Teachers have been equipped with on line teaching through the internet into the student’s homes. Students who do not have computers have been checked out Chromebooks for their use. Teachers have been given the tools and programs to interface with the students all at once. They will have 4 hours of instruction a day.
With all this said, please watch for our Live and Silent Auction information and participate if you can and want to contribute or to make a donation. With your prayers and support we can continue to provide the education our children and families are accustomed to in our faith based environment.
The Faculty, Staff, parents and children wish us all a healthy and safe outcome to this event.
