-Retirement Fund for Religious and Diocesan Priests

December 10-11, 2016

Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests have offered their lives in service to others—educating the young, comforting the sick, seeking justice for the oppressed. Today, many are frail, elderly, and in need of assistance. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to furnish medications, nursing care, and other necessities. Please give generously to today’s second collection.

-SIMBANG GABI – A Filipino Christmas Tradition

Simbang Gabi ( “Simba” means Mass, “Gabi” means night or evening) is a long treasured Philippine tradition which originally is a series of “dawn masses” for 9 consecutive days, in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary in anticipation of Christmas. Its liturgical significance comes from the Season of Advent, being the time of spiritual preparation to worthily welcome and receive the Child Jesus in our midst. It starts every December 16th

through December 24th and is usually done as early as 3 to 5

o’clock in the morning. At St. Anthony Claret Church, novena masses are celebrated in the evenings as anticipated masses in lieu of dawn masses, for practical purposes. Thus, we usually start the novena on the evening of December 15th .

The Simbang Gabi originated in the early days of Christianity in the Philippines, in and about 1660. The Philippines is an agricultural country where farmers, during the Spanish rule, toiled all day with one break during noon when the heat would be at its peak. When the Christmas season would begin, it was customary to hold novenas in the evenings. The Missionary Friars saw that the people despite fatigue wanted to attend the services. As a compromise, the clergy began to hold Mass in the early dawn when the land would still be dark before the natives went out to toil in the fields again. It was then a practical compromise for farmers who started their day before sunrise, at the crack of dawn, to avoid the heat in the fields. Simbang Gabi Mass is also known as Misa de Gallo. The word “gallo” means “rooster” in Spanish. At the first sound of dawn, at the crowing of the rooster, the entire family would get up and walk to the nearest parish church. This religious practice has been handed from one generation to the next and it evolved into a distinctly Philippine tradition. Simbang Gabi expresses the faith of Filipinos in God who is present in human history, even in the simple joys and anxieties of life’s humblest activities. The Filipino Community cordially invites everyone to join in their 9 days Simbang Gabi Novena. Schedule of masses are as follows:
