What is OpenOffice

Impress?

OpenOffice Impress

is the

presentation software program that is

part of the free suite of software titles

Getting Started With OpenOffice

Impress

The first time you open

OpenOffice Impress

, the

Presentation Wizard

starts to assist you in beginning your first

presentation.

There are three options for your presentation

Empty presentation

From template

Slide Design and Output Options

OpenOffice Impress

comes with two free

backgrounds that you

may opt to use for your

presentation. These are

listed here in Step 2 of

the Presentation Wizard.

If you do not select one

of these backgrounds,

your presentation will

start with a blank, white

slide. This is the option

we will use for this

Slide Transitions and Slide Timings

Step 3 of the OpenOffice

Impress Presentation

Wizard offers the ability

to assign

slide transitions

and to

make your presentation

automatic by applying

timings to the slides.

Select the options now,

or you may choose to

add those selections at a

later time.

Section 1. This area of the screen is the Slides

pane, showing

thumbnail

views of all the slides in the

presentation.

Section 2. Each page of the

working area of the presentation is called a slide. New presentations

open with a blank slide in

normal view ready for editing.

Section 3. The area to the right is the Task pane l. Its contents vary

depending on the current task.

slide layouts for your presentation.

OpenOffice Impress Presentation Toolbar

Add New Slides, Slide Designs or Watch the Slide Show

The Presentation toolbar in OpenOffice Impress contains the buttons for new slide, slide design and viewing the slide show. It is located on the right side of the screen, next to the

Different Ways to View Slides in OpenOffice

Impress

The most commonly used toolbar, the

Standard toolbar is located at the top of the OpenOffice Impress window. It

contains the usual command icons such as New, Open, Cut, Copy, Paste and it even contains a really helpful icon to export your slide show directly to PDF format.

A second toolbar is located just under the Standard toolbar. It is the

Line and Filling toolbar. This handy toolbar allows you to quickly edit

OpenOffice Impress Drawing Toolbar

The Drawing toolbar is located at the bottom of the OpenOffice Impress main screen. This frequently used toolbar contains most of the tools you will use in creating your presentations. Some

OpenOffice Impress Slide Layouts

When you first open OpenOffice Impress, a

blank, white slide is shown. However, most likely, your presentation will begin with a Title slide.

There are several options for Title slides in OpenOffice Impress. The following three options are the most

commonly used, but not the only selections.

Add a New Slide in OpenOffice Impress

Click the Slide button on the Presentation toolbar on the right side of the screen. Select a slide layout from the thumbnail

views shown in the

Title and Text Slide Layout in

OpenOffice Impress

The Title and Text slide is

probably the most commonly used slide layout in any presentation. It is also known as a bulleted list

slide, simply because it contains jot points listed as bullet points.

When each bullet point is typed, pressing the Enter key will produce a new bullet. This slide layout is used for short lists of related items.

On the left of the OpenOffice Impress window, is the

Slides pane which shows miniature versions, or

thumbnail views of all your slides in the presentation. The slides are

numbered and you can easily move

Content Layout Slides in

Content layout slides are those that will

include items such as a spreadsheet, a

chart, clip art, a table or photos, to name a few items.

After choosing the type of content layout you want, simply

include groups of data to make a point In most

cases, this data is much more effective when

expressed as a chart or graph, rather than as text.

Charts are just one of the types of content that can be easily added, using one of the content layout slides. The chart is

actually created using the companion program,

OpenOffice Calc, which is included in the free

Notes pages are for the speaker of the

presentation. A small

version of a single slide is shown on one page above a blank area for notes.

Use a Bitmap for a Background on Open

Office Impress Slides

The bitmap may be tiled or autofit to fill the whole slide depending on your preference.

Tiling is the process of repeating the picture over and over to cover the

whole slide. This is usually done when the picture is very small.

Autofit will stretch the bitmap to cover the whole slide. If the bitmap is

A Poorly Designed Slide

A poorly designed slide is one that is

difficult to read.

Make it easy for your audience to

follow your presentation by choosing font colors, sizes and

styles so that they have no problem reading your slides, no matter

where they are seated in the room.

sharply with the background

Font - Choose the font type from the selection of fonts installed on your computer.

Typeface - Depending on the font type you selected you may have the option for bold

and/or italics. (Not all fonts offer these

features).

1)Underlining - Choose a style of underlining from single to double or dashed lines. Once the underlining option has been selected, the color option becomes active and you may choose the color of the line.

2)Strikethrough - Several different styles are available for the strikethrough option - single line, double line, X, or slashes. You can also choose to strike through single words only rather than the complete phrase, including spaces.

3)Font color - Select from a wide range of color options.

3)Select a transition. A preview will show on the current slide. Keep

previewing until you find a transition that you like. To see a preview

again on the same slide, click on the Play button.

4)If you are happy with the selected transition, it will be applied
