In the last 6 months the parishioners of
SFXC have generously contributed to the following:
SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE $1933.18
This appeal supports a culture of life vs. a culture of death through Pro Life activities such as offering
workshops/seminars on abortion: Alternative & Healing; Bioethics, Death Penalty, Euthanasia,
Married Love & The gift of Life, Life, Dignity & Justice.
MISSIONS APPEAL $2822.20
More than 40% of U.S. Dioceses are considered mission territory. This appeal provides mass and the
sacraments, religious education, and ministry training for priests, deacons, religious sisters, and lay
people.
PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH $3913.60
The Society works with local Churches to provide an ordinary subsidy for the day to day running of the
diocese and to offer spiritual healing and practical assistance to the communities with the greatest
needs. It supports the young Church by responding to requests to help build chapels and churches,
pastoral centers, clinics and hospitals and to provide medications, pastoral care and emergency relief.
Assistance is also provided for lay catechists in terms of formation, remuneration, and resources. All
aid is respectful of the dignity and self-esteem of the recipients with the eventual aim of encouraging
and developing independence.
RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS $4076.29
Of 539 communities providing data to the National Religious Retirement Office (NRRO), only 41 are
adequately funded for retirement. Historically, Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests—
known collectively as women and men religious—received small stipends that just met the needs of the
day. Any surplus funds were reinvested in ministry and the education of younger members. As a result,
hundreds of U.S. religious communities lack adequate retirement savings. At the same time, the income
available to support older religious is decreasing. Currently, earnings from the ministries of younger
religious cover a significant portion of eldercare expenses, but the number of religious able to serve in
compensated ministry is rapidly diminishing.
Questions of the Week
Question for Children:
Name or draw a picture of a time you knew that Jesus was with you.Question for Youth:
The disciples had a very intense experience of Jesus on the mountain. Have you ever had a "mountain top" experience? What was it like for you?Question for Adults:
In what ways does Jesus speak today, ways in which you can truly "listen to him?"Preguntas de la Semana
Second Sunday of Lent February 25, 2018
THE OBEDIENCE OF ABRAHAM AND JESUSGod tested Abraham by asking not for an ordinary sacrifice, which would have been a partial burning with the meat divided between God and the people and eaten by those who sacrificed, but for a
holocaust, a total burning of the
sacrificial animal. This type of sacrifice consecrated the entire offering to God alone. This is what God was asking of Abraham in offering his only son, Isaac. When Abraham demonstrated his obedience, that was enough. This story from today’s scriptures foretells the completion of the blood sacrifices of the old covenant in the new covenant: the blood of God’s own Son, offered to us on the cross and in the Eucharist. Abraham’s obedience foreshadows the obedience of Jesus to God’s promise of salvation. The obedience of Abraham is rewarded in the birth to him, through
Isaac, of many nations. The obedience of Jesus is rewarded in the salvation of all people for all time.
"Be fruitful and increase in number"
(Genesis 1:28)
Reflection: God Himself is fruitful. Love always overflows into life. By commanding us, as a human family, to be fruitful, God is commanding us to be like him. He wants us to share the joy he has of giving new life. God's Word counts fertility as a great blessing and sign of his favor.
Prayer: Lord, I thank you for the gift of fertility that you have given to the human family. I pray today for those who are trying to conceive but are having difficulty. Give them the blessing and joy of new life. Amen.
"Sed fructiferos y multiplicaos"
(Genesis 1-28)
Amen.
