27th Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint Mark Church October 7, 2018

Pastor’s Corner

For many years I came to Mass each

Sunday, put a couple of bills in the collection

basket, grabbed a bulletin from an usher, and

then headed home. I didn't know anyone in

the parish, and they didn't know me. I'm sure

that they were very nice people. And,

obvi-ously people of faith who came to church

al-most every Sunday.

But, then, when I was in my late 20's, I

felt an urge to get involved in my parish, and,

once I did, I met some pretty amazing

peo-ple. Over the years I have often wondered

how many other Catholics are in the same

boat that I was in. And, I have asked myself,

how can we encourage more people to feel

that sense of welcome, rather than experience

a sense of isolation, even when they are in the

midst of hundreds of people?

Our Parish Pastoral Council has been

discussing the issue of Hospitality in light of

our Parish Pastoral Plan. As a result, we have

decided to hold a seminar next Saturday

morning, October 13th, in the Parish Hall in

which we can learn more about how to make

more people feel welcome in our church.

This is not a meeting simply for ushers and

greeters. It is a meeting for everyone who

wants to gain some new ideas about how to

make our guests feel welcome, and our

long-term members. It will be an opportunity to

learn about what other parishes are doing, and

to see if some of theses concepts might work

here at St. Mark Church.

So, please join us next Saturday

morn-ing as we reach out to those around us in a

spirit of welcome and hospitality! Sign up by

visiting the parish website, calling the parish

office or at bit.ly/stmarkwelcome

May the Lord continue to bless us

al-ways and in all al-ways,

Father Paul Spellman

FROM OUR PASTOR

me conocían.

bas-tante asombrosa. A lo largo de los años me he

preguntado cuántos otros católicos están en la

misma situación que yo estaba. Y, me he

Archbishop Gomez Urges Prayers for Victims and New Ef-forts to Purify the Church

The recent reports regarding abuse in the Church serve as a re-minder of the importance of continuing our efforts to be diligent in the prevention of abuse in our Church and in society. Our prayers and support are with victim-survivors, their families and all impacted by this evil. Archbishop José H. Gomez urges pray-ers for abuse victims and new efforts to purify the Church: “We are aware that this is a sad and confusing time for the Church in this country. In recent days and weeks, we have heard new reve-lations about sin and abuse in the Church. This is a time now for prayer and repentance and a time for examining our conscience, especially for those of us who are bishops and priests. And all of us need to pray for every person who has been hurt by the Church, and we need to work to help them heal. Let us ask the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary, the Mother of the Church. May she help us to have the courage we need to purify the Church and renew our love for holiness and our devotion to Jesus Christ and his Gospel.”
