Message from Our Pastor

My Dear Family of Our Lady of Lourdes,

As I mentioned last week, the Easter Vigil – the highlight of Holy Week - is when we celebrate Jesus’ Resurrection and share the new life that we have found in Christ with our brothers and sisters who have come to know him and seek to die with him in Baptism so as to live with him in his Resurrection.

I offer this brief description of that night truly blessed so that we might participate more fully and enter more deeply the mysteries which we will celebrate. By most ancient tradition the Easter Vigil is the night of keeping vigil for the Lord in which faithful, carrying lighted candles in their hands, are like those looking for the Lord when he returns, so that at his coming he may find them awake and have them sit at His ta-ble. There are four parts to the liturgy.

The first part is the Lucernarium and Easter Proclamation. Here the priest blesses the new fire and from the new fire lights the Paschal Candle saying “May the light of Christ rising in glory dispel the dark-ness of our hearts and minds.” The light of Christ is then passed to the Christian faithful and His light fills the world anew. Arriving at the altar the celebrant sings the Easter Proclamation: “Exult, let them exult…”

In the second part Holy Church hears God’s Word proclaimed from both the Old and New Testaments, meditating “on how God in times past saved His people and in these, the last days, has sent us His Son as our Redeemer.”

For the third part of the Easter Vigil liturgy, the Baptism and Confirmation of the Catechumens, the whole Communion of Saints comes together to pray for those who have spent the past year “coming to Christ” so that on this night they may be baptized into His death and may rise again to life with Him who lives and reigns with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

Finally, the whole Christian family is called to the table the Lord has prepared for his people, the memorial of his Death and Resurrection until he comes again: “For He is the true Lamb who has taken away the sins of the world; by dying He has destroyed our death, and by rising, restored our life.” And filled with the joy of a people redeemed we go out to all the world singing anew the “Alleluia”; for Jesus Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!

May God Bless you, Msgr. Schwanger

Schwanger

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

Spirit Day Celebration

On Saturday, March 16th, 214 of our young people who are preparing for the sacrament of Confirmation or the sacraments at the Easter Vigil gathered here at Our Lady of Lourdes for a day-long retreat called Spirit Day. This group included children from our parish school, children in the Christian Formation program as well as several children from local Catholic high schools and other parishes.

This was, far and away, the largest Spirit Day retreat we have ever had here at Our Lady of Lourdes. The chil-dren experienced God’s love in action through the service of 60 high school and college age leaders who led most of the activities for the day. These leaders planned and practiced the events for the day through many hours of discussion, rehearsal, and prayer. In addition, there were 20 dedicated adults who mentored and super-vised the entire day. In addition to the spiritual activities of the day, the kids managed to eat every slice of pizza we had available for them, all 100 boxes.

The day closed with the celebration of the 5:00 P.M. Mass. This retreat experience manifests the very best Our Lady of Lourdes has to offer. Congratulations to all who made the day possible. It was truly a great experi-ence. Please continue to pray for these children as they move ever closer to Jesus through the sacraments.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, “Just One Hour”

Not only does Jesus continuously shower his graces upon us and our loved ones, but after 2000 years, He allows us to share in the work of redemption. We become participants now in his original work of redemption. The late Archbishop Fulton Sheen of Rochester, NY, said of the Holy Hour Devotion, “. . . it is not a devotion; it was a shar-ing in the work of Redemption.” And this is precisely what we do here at Our Lady of Lourdes; we participate in the work of redemption.
