Fill with dirt and plant your seeds. The cardboard should break down in the soil, but you can also remove it before planting.THIS WEEKEND, WE CELEBRATE THE FIRST OF THE THREE SCRUTINIES WITH OUR ELECT AND CANDI- DATES FOR FULL COMMUNION.
These are prayers of self-searching and repentance and above all, have a spiritual purpose. The Scrutinies are meant to uncover and then heal all that is weak and sinful in the hearts of the Elect, and to bring out and strengthen all that is upright and good. The blessings which are part of the Scrutinies are to protect the Elect (and all those pre- sent at Mass) against temptation to sin and give them strength in Christ who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
They help the Elect (and all present) to deepen their re- solve to hold fast to Christ and to love God with one’s who heart and mind and soul.
ON THIS 3rd SUNDAY OF LENT, WE READ HOW JE- SUS OVERTURNED THE TABLES OF THE MER-
CHANTS AND MONEYCHANGERS IN THE TEMPLE OF JERUSALEM. In order to understand the relevance of Jesus’ actions, we should first consider why there were moneychangers and merchants in the temple precincts in the first place. Worship at the Temple included animal sacrifice and merchants sold animals for this purpose.
Moneychangers exchanged Roman coins (which bore the image of the Emperor), for temple coins that were needed to pay the temple tax. So their presence was an under- standable if not necessary part of daily Temple life.
The Temple was destroyed by the Romans in A.D.
70, and John recalls Jesus cleansing the Temple as a way to interpret the later event. For John, temple worship would no longer be necessary because it was surpassed by the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus. After clearing the Temple of the merchants and moneychang- ers, John tells us that the people asked Jesus for a sign of his authority to do such an audacious act. In response, Jesus predicted his own death and Resurrection.
Throughout John’s Gospel, the word “signs” is used (rather than “miracle”). It is in the nature of a “sign” to point to a reality grater than itself; miracles” would be inter- preted as the acts of magicians and charlatans. Thus, the signs performed by Jesus point to his authority. And in the cleansing of the Temple and the dialogue following, we learn that the sign par excellence will be Jesus’ Passion, death and Resurrection.
During Lent, we reflect upon the meaning of this sign for us and for our world. We might take this opportunity to consider the quality of our prayer and worship. In our prayers we seek to deepen our relationship with the per- son of Christ. In our worship with the gathered communi- ty, we experience anew the Passion, death and Resurrec- tion of Jesus and its significance in our lives. Christ prom- ises to be present with us when we gather for prayer.
EN ESTE TERCER DOMINGO DE CUARESMA, LEEMOS CÓMO JESÚS VOLTEA LAS MESAS DE LOS COMERCI- ANTES Y CAMBIADORES DE DINERO EN EL TEMPLO DE JERUSALÉN. Para comprender la relevancia de las acciones de Jesús, primero debemos considerar por qué había cambistas y comerciantes en los recintos del templo en primer lugar. La adoración en el templo incluía el sacrifi- cio de animales y los comerciantes vendían animales para este propósito. Los cambistas intercambiaban monedas romanas (que tenían la imagen del Emperador) por monedas del templo que eran necesarias para pagar el im- puesto del templo. UNDERSTANDING THE LITURGY (continued): The following is to help you understand why we do what we do during Mass and the celebration of the sacraments.
THE SIGN OF THE CROSS came into use as a reli- gious gesture of blessing during the Middle Ages. It takes several forms. The big Sign of the Cross is made with the hand, touching first the forehead, then the breast, left shoulder and finally the right shoulder. The little Sign of the Cross is made by tracing a small cross on the fore- head, mouth, and breast (done just prior to the reading of the Gospel with the words, “May the words of the Holy Gospel be in my mind, on my lips and in my heart.”) This popular gesture was introduced into the liturgy during the 4th century with the tracing of the cross on the forehead of candidates for baptism. It was also used from early cen- turies as a gesture of blessing over he bread and wine of Eucharist and of he objects to be dedicated to God. In this way people, too, were blessed.
RITUAL WORDS are sacramentals, many coming from ancient Hebrew, like Amen (:so be it”), Alleluia (“Praise the Lord”), Hosanna (“Please, save us”).
LITANIES became a favorite method of prayer in the Middle Ages. The two most popular are the Litany of the Saints and the Litany of Loretto, commonly referred to as the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In modern times, so many litanies were composed, some with questionable content, that the Church began to restrict their public use.
The only litanies officially approved today (beside the Lita- nies of the Saints and Loretto) are those of the Holy Name, Sacred Heart, St. Joseph and the Precious Blood
WE WILL KICK OFF THE YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH with a Novena in Honor of St. Joseph. The Novena will begin Wednesday, March 10th, in English at 8:00 am, and in Spanish at 7:30 pm (times will vary on the weekend). Plan now on spending a half-hour each day in prayer to our patron, that St. Joseph will continue to bless us so that we may shine forth with the light of his love and caring.

She worked for several years in Ogden City Schools as a cafeteria lady. She and her husband, Walter, were rock hounds. They loved to go into the desert and search for precious stones. She was a wonderful crafter: she made porcelain dolls and crocheted many items which she would donate to the South Ogden Senior Center.
Had she lived to her next birthday, Rosemary would have ben 100 years old. May she rest in peace!
