From the Desk of Fr. John Hoffman 2

The month of September is Suicide Prevention Month. Those who die of suicide suffer a wrenching, most painful darkness in their lives and leave behind family members and friends who suffer greatly with gnawing, unanswerable questions. May we, the living, find peace and comfort in believing that our beloved are with God, and that we will be together again in God’s eternal kingdom. And may we not be reluctant to try to help those who are deeply troubled.

The Interfaith Prayer Vigil for Immigrant Children and Families has been moved from Sept. 22 to Oct. 16 at Noon to accommodate Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist and Catholic calendars. But our prayers on September 22 will also have a focus on Immigration at the request of Pope Francis. Remembering Mark 10:14, Let the Children come to me, do not stop them, we continue to pray for and act in the name of those who are the most vulnerable, who seek safety and dignity.

Violence – Seems pretty obvious that our governing bodies as they exist now are not going to do anything about the gun violence that exists in our country (God forgive all of us). So anything that may make any difference, no matter how small, has to come from me, from you, from each one of us. Do whatever I can to look for life-giving words and actions (gossip about virtues and gifts people have?), choices (take time to re-cycle, hold a door open for

someone?) and commitments (make sure I vote in the elections and encourage others to do the same.) Sound naïve? Do you

remember the story of the elder telling a student that everyone has a Good Wolf on one shoulder and a Bad Wolf on the other, each trying to influence how we interact with each other? When the student asked, “Which one wins?” the elder told him, “The one you feed.”

Do you teenagers know about the Parish Youth Ministry Group, Ever Presence??? Come and take a look, bring a friend.

Information is in this Bulletin and in the Gathering Space in church.

Fr. John Dearhammer has invited us to his installation as Pastor of Mission San Juan Diego in Arlington Heights. It will be on Saturday, September 21 at 5pm. I will be going. If you need a ride, let me know.

Have you heard about this sign in a shoe repair shop in Vancouver?

We will heel you. We will save your sole. We will even dye for you.

Hopefully you are back into the rhythm of the school year and you are enjoying the beautiful month of September. Can you believe how beautiful the landscaping is here at Church of the Holy Spirit?!

Tú has venido a la orilla, no has buscado ni a sabios ni a ricos;

Tan sólo quieres que yo te siga.

Señor, me has mirado a los ojos, sonriendo has dicho mi nombre, En la arena he dejado mi barca, junto a ti buscaré otro mar.

Tú sabes bien lo que tengo;

(bis)

Letra y música: Calor Rosas, n. 1939, copyright 1977, Carlos Rosas. Obra publicada por OCP Publications. Derechos reservados.

Me ofreces agua viva, mi sed conoces bien;

Gracias quiero darte yo a ti, Señor.

(bis)

Te conocí y te amé. Te pedí perdón y me escuchaste.

Sí, te ofendí, perdóname, Señor, pues te amo y nunca te olvidré.

Songs for the 5pm, 8am & 10am Masses 5

Gathering Song: All Are Welcome

Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live,

A place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive.

Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace;

Here the love of Christ shall end divisions:

All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where prophets speak, And words are strong and true,

Where all God’s children dare to seek To dream God’s reign anew.

Here the cross shall stand as witness And as symbol of God’s grace;

Here as one we claim the faith of Jesus:

Text: Marty Haugen, b. 1950 Tune: TWO OAKS, 9 6 8 6 8 7 10 with refrain, Marty Haugen, b. 1950 © 1994, GIA Publications, Inc.

Psalm Response:

In ev‘ry age, O Lord, you have been our refuge you have been our refuge.

The English translation of the psalm response from the Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, ICEL, Inc.; the English translation of Psalm 90 from the Liturgical Psalter © 1994, ICEL. All rights reserved. Used with permission. Music: © 1996, Timothy R.

Presentation Song: Take Up Your Cross

Take up your cross, the Savior said, if you would my disciples be;

Take up your cross with willing heart, and humbly follow after me.

Take up your cross, let not its weight fill your weak spirit with alarm;

His strength shall bear your spirit up, and brace your heart and nerve your arm.

Take up your cross, heed not the shame, and let your foolish heart be still;

The Lord for you accepted death upon a cross, on Calv’ry’s hill.

Take up your cross, then, in his strength, and calmy ev’ry danger brave:

It guides you to a better home and leads to vict’ry o’er the grave.

Creed on page 10

Take up your cross, and follow Christ, nor think till death to lay it down;

For only those who wear the cross may hope to wear the glorious crown.

Text: Charles W. Everest, 1814-1877, alt. Tune: O WALY WALY, LM; English;

harm. By Martin West,b. 1929, © 1983, Hope Publishing Co.

Communion Song: Eye Has Not Seen

Eye has not seen, ear has not heard

What God has ready for those who love him;

Spirit of love, come, give us the mind of Jesus, Teach us the wisdom of God.

When pain and sorrow weigh us down, be near to us, O Lord,

Forgive the weakness of our faith,

And bear us up within your peaceful word.

Our lives are but a single breath, we flower and we fade,

Yet all our days are in your hands, So we return in love what love has made.

To those who see with eyes of faith, the Lord is ever near,

Reflected in the faces

of all the poor and lowly of the world.

We sing a myst’ry from the past in halls where saints have trod, yet ever new the music rings to Jesus, Living Song of God.

Text: 1 Corinthians 2: 9-10; Marty Haugen, b. 1950 Tune: Marty Haugen, b. 1950

Closing Song: Let There Be Peace On Earth

Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.

Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be.

With God as our Father, fam’ly all are we.

Let us walk with each other in perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me; let this be the moment now.

With ev’ry step I take, let this be my solemn vow;

To take each moment, and live each moment in peace eternally!

Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.

Meal Ministry

Do you know a family that could use having a meal brought into their home?

Perhaps an elderly neighbor, a young family with a new baby, or someone grieving a lost one?

OR

Do you have the time to make and deliver a meal to someone every so often? Not necessarily weekly – maybe even only once?

We are looking to create a Meal Ministry here at Church of the Holy Spirit, and we are looking for those that would be willing to donate their culinary skills for the benefit of those in need.

If you are willing and able to make a meal, or if you or someone you know would benefit from receiving a meal, please contact our parish office and Barb Geller will be in touch with you. Or, you can email

JOURNEY IN FAITH

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults R. C. I. A.

Do you want to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation or

First Communion?

Do you know someone who is interested in becoming Catholic?

If the answer is yes, we would love to talk with you about the Journey in Faith (RCIA) process. RCIA is for any adult (18+) who would like to be baptized Catholic or become a Catholic after having been baptized in another Christian tradition. It is also for baptized Catholics who have not completed the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. Our formal process will begin in September. We meet with a group of adults on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in an

informal setting. We explore such topics as What is Faith? Who is God and why does God care about me?

What are the roles of Mary and the Pope?

And much more.

Parish Information / Información Parroquial

I believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven;

and by the Holy Spirit,

was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried,

and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified.

who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic, apostolic Church.

I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

I look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen

y se hizo hombre;

y subió al cielo, y está sentado a la derecha del Padre;
