Pope Francis proclaims “Year of St Joseph”
In a new Apostolic Letter entitled Patris corde(“With a Father’s Heart”), Pope Francis describes Saint Joseph as a beloved father, a tender and loving father, an obedient father, an accepting father; a father who is creative-ly courageous, a working father, a father in the shadows.
The Letter marks the 150th anniversary of Blessed Pope Pius IX’s declaration of St Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. To celebrate the anniversary, Pope Francis has proclaimed a special “Year of St Joseph,” beginning on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception 2020 and extending to the same feast in 2021. The Holy Father wrote Patris corde against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, which, he says, has helped us see more clearly the importance of “ordinary” people who, though far from the limelight, exercise patience and offer hope every day. In this, they resemble Saint Joseph, “the man who goes unnoticed, a daily, discreet and hidden presence,” who nonetheless played “an incomparable role in the history of salvation.”
St. Joseph Prayer
Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man. Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father
and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen.
Ashes from Palms for Ash Wednesday
The tradition for Ash Wednesday is to burn the palm leaves from the previous year's Palm Sunday. During this time of Pandemic, we are going to continue that tradition and burn the palms for ashes. For this reason, we like to ask each one of you to bring to the church your old palms to burn them for ashes and use it for Ash Wednesday on February 17th.
Ashes will still be distributed, as long as there is no direct contact. In much of the world, the normal way of distributing ashes on Ash Wednesday is to sprinkle ashes on top of the head, with no contact, rather than smearing them on the forehead. This year we will sprinkle the ashes on top of the head.
Your own internal disposition and intention to repent and start over is the best fruit of Ash Wednesday; the ashes are an external sign of that internal reality.
Let us all enter into Lent with a repentant heart.
Blessing of Throats
During this time of Pandemic the Blessings of the Throats will not be done individually. We will do a general blessing of throats during the masses on Wednesday February 3rd and Sun-day February 7th as usual.
The efficacy of the blessing lies in the intention of the priest or deacon, and not on their proximity to the recipi-ent of the blessing.
Jesus brings a new message of love to the whole world, a message of God’s providence, peace and for-giveness. That message is renewed each day when we pray, when we serve, when we acknowledge the im-portance of faith and act on our desire to love. Some will hear it, others will ignore it, and some will doubt it. But the message persists, offering hope and grace to everyone.
God’s calls us in His own time, perhaps at a moment we are least expecting it. He never takes it back. We are always able to respond, to begin again, and to re-new our willingness to accept and share the message of love and life, of goodness and grace.
Accept the call. Life will never be the same.

“Life is sacred. Life is a mystery. Life must be protected, nur-tured, respected. The Gospel of Life is the centerpiece of the Church’s social teaching…It is our task to witness to the truth that love, compassion and solidarity can build a just society that will be safer for the poor, the unborn and those on the Periphery.”
+Seán Cardinal O’Malley, OFM Cap
What does it mean to be “pro-life”?
Being pro-life certainly means opposing abortion but, for Catholics, being pro-life also means more than just opposing abortion. The
Church calls us to care for and respect the dignity of life at all
stag-es, from its earliest days in the womb to the time of our natural death – and at all stages in between.
In a special way, we are called to provide care to the most vulnerable and marginalized among us which includes the unborn, the terminal-ly ill, those with severe disabilities, those on death row, and refugees and migrants around the world who have been displaced by war, famine and civil unrest.
