Dear handball friends,
It gives me great pleasure to welcome supporters, players, officials and partners to the 2021/22 season of the EHF Champions League Men.
After the difficulties the world faced in 2020, towards the end of last season we saw a gradual return to elite level sport and fans inside arenas. During last season and during this summer, the EHF and EHF Marketing invested additional time to prepare for the forthcoming season with the aim of developing the competition as the benchmark event in the indoor sports market in a time where Covid-19 still remains a topic of discussion.
Last season belonged to Barça, who lifted the trophy after a spectacular run of form that saw them win all of their 20 matches. And now we are all set to usher in the 29th season in 2021/22 which will open a new chapter in European handball’s top flight.
As was the case last season, the EHF Champions League Men will once again be played in a system with 16 elite teams in two groups of eight, starting directly at the group phase played in a round-robin league format.
The top two teams in each group will then qualify directly for the quarter-finals with teams finishing in seventh and eighth place eliminated. The four remaining teams from each group (3rd-6th) will qualify for a play-off round, before progressing to the quarter-finals and then the EHF FINAL4.
Once more fans will have an ‘appointment to view’ each week, and with no overlap of men’s and women’s top competitions. EHF Champions League Men games will be played on Wednesday and Thursday evenings (18:45 and 20:45 CEST/CET), with the weekends set- aside for DELO Women’s EHF Champions League games.
After the pre-season break, all 16 teams return with hope of lifting the winners’ trophy at competition’s conclusion. The line-up in both groups speak volumes about the quality of all squads and, even though there might be some favourites and underdogs on paper, this competition’s history has already proven many times that surprising results can be expected on a daily basis.
As ever we, together with clubs and our partners, will make ensure that the EHF Champions League Men will bring drama, excitement and passion throughout the next 10 months, whether you are watching inside arenas or from the comfort of your own home. Benvolguts amics de l'handbol,
És per a mi un gran plaer donar la benvinguda als simpatitzants, jugadors, responsables i socis a la temporada 2021/22 de la Lliga de Campions masculina de l'EHF.
Malgrat les dificultats que el món va patir el 2020, cap al final de la temporada passada vam presenciar un retorn gradual a l’esport d’elit i vam veure com augmentava el nombre d'aficionats als camps. Al llarg de la darrera temporada i durant aquest estiu, l’EHF i EHF Marketing han invertit temps addicional per preparar-se per a la propera temporada, amb l’objectiu que la competició es converteixi en l’esdeveniment de referència al mercat de l’esport de pista coberta en un moment en què la COVID-19 continua essent objecte de debat.
La temporada passada va pertànyer al Barça, que va aixecar el trofeu després d’una espectacular campanya que els va permetre guanyar els 20 partits jugats. I ara estem a punt d’iniciar la 29a temporada, la 2021/22, que obrirà un nou capítol en la màxima categoria de l’handbol europeu.
Com en el cas de la darrera temporada, la Lliga de Campions masculina de l’EHF es tornarà a jugar en un sistema on hi participen setze equips d’elit, dividits en dos grups de vuit, i que arrencarà directament en la fase de grups que es jugarà en format de tots contra tots.
Els dos primers equips de cada grup es classificaran directament per als quarts de final i els equips que acabin en setena i vuitena posició quedaran eliminats. Els quatre equips restants de cada grup (3r a 6è) es classificaran per a una ronda de play-off, abans de passar als quarts de final i després a la FINAL A 4 DE L’EHF.
Un cop més, els aficionats tindran una "cita esportiva" cada setmana, sense que coincideixin els partits de les principals competicions masculines i femenines. Els partits de la Lliga de Campions masculina de l’EHF es jugaran els dimecres i dijous al vespre (18:45 i 20:45 CEST/CET), amb els caps de setmana reservats per als partits de la Lliga de Campions DELO femenina de l’EHF.
Després de l’aturada per la pretemporada, els setze equips tornen amb l’esperança d’aixecar el trofeu de campions al final de la competició. Els integrants dels dos grups diuen molt de la qualitat de totes les plantilles i, tot i que sobre el paper hi poden haver favorits i equips que no ho siguin, la història d’aquesta competició ja ha demostrat en moltes ocasions que en qualsevol moment es pot donar un resultat sorprenent.
Com sempre, juntament amb els clubs i els nostres socis, ens assegurarem que la Lliga de Campions masculina de l’EHF aporti dramatisme, il·lusió i passió durant els propers 10 mesos, ja sigui en el terreny de joc o des de la comoditat de casa.
