“Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee. A large crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick.

Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.

The Jewish feast of Passover was near.

When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip, ‘Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?'

He said this to test him. Philip answered him,

‘Two hundred days' wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little.’

One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him,

‘There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish;

but what good are these for so many?’

Jesus said, ‘Have the people recline.’

Now there was a great deal of grass in that place.

So the men reclined, about five thousand in number.

Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks,and distributed them, and also as much of the fish as they wanted.

When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples,

‘Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.’

So they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat.

When the people saw the sign he had done, they said,

‘This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world.’

Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain alone.”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Last Wednesday, the greatest pilgrimage in our tradition ended with the feast of Saint James at his shrine in Com- postela, Spain. Every year, as many as a hundred thousand persons walk a portion of the medieval way of the pilgrim, earning the right to wear the scallop shell symbol of this journey of faith. In legend, this city on the northern coast of Spain is the final resting place of the apostle, and the full name of the cathedral is “Saint James of the Field of Stars.” There is a tradition that Saint James the Great preached there.

In the Roman Catholic tradition, the pilgrimage, like any procession, is a symbol, life’s journey distilled, a pow- erful sign of our journey toward a certain goal. The perils of the road, the support of companions, the contemplative slower pace of life, have the potential to transform and re- new the pilgrims in ways that last a lifetime. Along the way, the distinctions between rich and poor fall away, and every- one shares humble rustic food and stops for the night in hostels or under the stars. After a long walk, the experience of entering through the great doors into the vast cathedral filled with incense, light, and song is a foretaste of heaven.

The pilgrims often say that their whole lives are redirected toward that moment of entry into the heavenly Jerusalem.

The most memorable feature of the cathedral is called the botafumeiro, an incense burner on pulleys and chains that sweeps through the cathedral in immense circles, swirling clouds of sweet-smelling incense around the vast nave.

En el Evangelio de hoy, lee- mos el reporte del regreso de los Doce que fueron enviados por Jesús a predi- car el arrepentimiento, curar a los en- fermos y expulsar los demonios. Cuan- do los Doce regresan con Jesús, el los invita a alejarse de la muchedumbre y descansar. Pero no los dejan en paz. Al haber los Doce compartido en el ministerio de Jesús, parece ahora que compartirán en su popularidad. La muchedumbre se sigue acercando y ni tiempo hay de comer. Jesús y sus discípulos se suben a una barca con esperanza de en- contrar un lugar desolado. Pero se da cuenta la gente y ganan por adelantados. Jesús y sus discípulos no hayan por donde encontrarse a solas. El Evangelio de Marcos nos dice que Jesús es conmovido y empieza a enseñar a la muchedumbre. Nuestro Evangelio de hoy aquí ter- mina pero el reporte de Marcos de las inquietudes de la muchedumbre continúa en los versos siguientes. Loyola Press In this today’s Gospel, we read the report of the return of the Twelve, who were sent by Jesus to preach repentance, heal the sick, and drive out demons. When the Twelve return to Jesus, he invites them to come away from the crowds and rest. But the crowds will not give them peace. As the Twelve have shared in Jesus’ ministry, they now appear to share in his popularity. The crowds continue to approach them, and Mark reports that the disciples don’t even have time to eat. Jesus and his disciples board a boat in hopes of finding a deserted place. But the crowds notice and arrive ahead of them. Jesus and his disciples cannot find a place to be alone. Mark’s Gospel tells us that Jesus is moved with pity and begins to teach the crowds.

Our Gospel for today stops here, but Mark’s report of the unyielding demands of the crowd continues in the verses that follow. If we were to continue reading, we would hear Jesus instruct his disciples to feed the crowd in the familiar

miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. We will hear this story in the next few weeks. The work of Je- sus and his disciples appears to be a round-the-clock job. In today’s Gospel, we hear the Twelve referred to as

“apostles.” The word apostle is a Greek word meaning

“one who is sent.” Jesus chose twelve men from among his disciples whom he sent to share in his ministry of preach- ing and healing. The first report of this is found in the third chapter of Mark’s Gospel, where the Twelve are also called apostles and the names of this select group are listed.

We who are Jesus’ disciples today have also been sent to share the Gospel with others. Perhaps our commitment to following Jesus as his disciple leaves us feeling tired and overwhelmed. In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus affirm the importance of times of rest and renewal. Jesus wanted his disciples to come away and spend time alone with him.

This is what we seek and find in our life of prayer and in our celebration of the Eucharist. Loyola Press

Martha, Mary and their brother Lazarus were evidently close friends of Jesus. He came to their home as a wel- comed guest rather than as one celebrating the conversion of sinners. The sisters feel free to call on Jesus at their brother’s death, even though a return to Judea at that time seems almost certain death. No doubt Martha was an active person. On one occasion, she prepares the meal for Jesus and possibly his fellow guests and states the obvious: All hands should pitch in to help with the dinner. Yet, as bibli- cal scholar Fr. John McKenzie points out, she need not be rated as an “unrecollected activist.” John emphasizes what our Lord said on several occasions about

the primacy of the spiritual: “Do not wor- ry about your life, what you will eat [or drink], or about your body, what you will wear…. But seek first the kingdom [of God] and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:25b, 33a); “One does not live by bread alone” (Luke 4:4b); “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteous- ness…” (Matthew 5:6a). Martha’s great glory is her simple and strong statement of faith in Jesus after her brother’s death.

“Jesus told her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ She said to him, ‘Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God,

the one who is coming into the world’” (John 11:25-27).

Reflection Saint John intends that we should see Martha’s words to Mary before Lazarus was raised as a summons for every Christian. Jesus is calling every one of us to resurrec- tion—now in baptismal faith, forever in sharing his victory over death. And all of us, as well as these three friends, are in our own unique way called to special friendship with Him.

Marta, María y su hermano Lázaro evidentemente era ami- gos cercanos de Jesús. Los visitaba en su casa como ami- go bien recibido en vez de alguien que celebraba la con- versión de los pecadores. Las hermanas sienten la confian- za de buscarlo al morir su hermano, aunque un regreso a Judea casi significaba la muerte cierta para Jesús. Sin dudas, Marta era una persona activa. Jesús le dijo: "Yo soy la resurrección y la vida.

El que cree en mí, aunque haya muerto, vivirá; y todo aquel que está vivo y cree en mí, no morirá para siempre.

¿Crees tú esto?" Ella le contestó: "Sí, Señor. Creo firmemente que tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios, el que tenía que venir al mundo".

San Juan quiere que interpretemos las palabras de Marta a María antes que resucite Lázaro como un llamado a cada Cristiano. Jesús nos llama a cada uno de nosotros a la res- urrección – ahora en la fe del bautismo, compartiendo siempre en su victoria sobre la muerte. Y tanto todos no- sotros como estos tres amigos, somos de nuestra manera llamados a una amistad especial con Él.

Sta. Marta es la Santa patrona de cocineros, amas de casa, sirvientes y meseros.
