For the occasion of the 64th IFLA General Conference to be held in Amsterdam, Netherlands from 16 to 21 August, the author presents a survey of the history of libraries in the Netherlands, beginning with the first library, established in the year 970, at the monastery of St. Adelbert. The overview also covers university libraries, municipal libraries, religious libraries, commercial libraries, and their collections.

Young, Peter R. Measurement of Electronic Services in Libraries: Statistics for the Digital Age

Conventional library statistics address a wide range of purposes and functions: administration and management; analysis and planning; policy development; and research. These library descriptive statistics reflect varying levels of comparability, consistency and comprehensiveness. However, agreement about timely, reliable, and relevant statistical information regarding electronic media resources and services in libraries has yet to emerge. This article raises questions and explores issues related to library measurement of electronic media and network services, and is primarily focused on public library Internet activity, although general issues are considered. The author also presents new challenges to existing systems, including shared/cooperative library arrangements for electronic services, digital object identifiers, and local and remote access to electronic services in libraries.

Simpson, Donald B. Economics of Cooperative Collection Development and the United States Experience with Rarely Held Research Materials IFLA Journal 24 (1998) No. 3, p. 161

The article describes the work of the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), a membership consortium of institutions with significant academic and research libraries. CRL operates a cooperative collection development programme that assists academic and research libraries in reducing the costs of making rarely held, primary research materials available to scholars and researchers. The cooperative collection development programme collects, preserves and provides

access to these research materials in print, microform and electronic formats. CRL has a large, centralized collection consisting of five major components upon which member libraries make local collecting decisions. These include global newspapers; serials, with a focus on foreign titles; foreign doctoral dissertations; retrospective collections; and area studies. The economic benefits of CRL membership are also covered.

Rochester, Maxine and Pertti Vakkari. International LIS Research: A Comparison of National Trends

IFLA Journal 24 (1998) No.3, p. 166

The article is a preliminary report of an IFLA-funded project to compare international and national trends in LIS research. Based on research articles in a core collection of journals in each country over several time periods, the authors compare the most popular topics, subtopics, and methods in national LIS studies in Australia, China, Finland, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom and relate them to international trends. The comparison has shown a remarkable variation of emphases and trends in research in the countries examined. The authors suggest that differences in national features of research can be explained by the differences in the social and cultural values of the countries. These factors have an impact on the formation of the national innovation system in a country, including higher education and research.

L ' a rticle décrit le travail du Centre pour les bibliothèques de recherche (CRL), un service de coopération entre d'import a n t e s bibliothèques de recherche et universitaires. CRL fonctionne comme une coopérative pour le développement des collections

au service des bibliothèques universitaires et de recherche en réduisant les coïts de communication aux étudiants et aux chercheurs de documents difficilement disponibles et de documents primaires pour la recherche. Il collecte, conserve et donne accès à ces documents pour la recherche sur support s imprimés, microformes ou électroniques. CRL a une grande collection centrale, composée de cinq sections principales en fonction desquelles chaque bibliothèque membre décide d'acquisitions locales. Cela inclut la presse, les périodiques notamment les titres étrangers, les thèses de pays étrangers; les collections rétrospectives; et les études par pays.

L ' a rticle est le rapport préliminaire d'un projet soutenu par l'IFLA sur la recherche LIS: comparaison internationale et tendances nationales. Basé sur une recherche bibliographique effectuée dans un grand nombre de périodiques dans chaque pays sur une large période de temps, les auteurs comparent les sujets les plus courants, des sujets plus précis et les méthodes utilisées par les études LIS en Australie, en Chine, en Finlande, en Espagne, en Turquie et au Royaume Uni, les mettant en relation avec les tendances internationales. La comparaison a montré une importante variation sur l'étendue et les tendances de recherche propres à chaque pays.

Diese bibliotheksbeschreibende Statistik r e f l e k t i e rt verschiedene Ebenen von Ve r g l e i c h b a r k e i t , Konsistenz und Umfänglichkeit. Eine Übereinstimmung über eine aktuelle, zuverlässige und relevante statistische I n f o rmation bezüglich elektronischer Medien und Angebote in Bibliotheken muß noch gefunden werden. Dieser Beitrag stellt Fragen und erforscht Probleme im Hinblick auf die Bewert u n g von elektronischen Medien und Netzdiensten und konzentriert sich primär auf Internet-Aktivitäten in öffentlichen Bibliotheken, obwohl auch allgemeine Fragen Beachtung finden. Der Autor stellt auch neue Herausforderungen an existierende Systeme v o r, einschließlich von Absprachen zwischen Bibliotheken über eine Aufteilung bzw. Kooperation bei elektronischen Angeboten, Sacherschließung von digitalen Dokumenten sowie lokaler und Fernzugriff auf elektronische

Dienste in Bibliotheken.

Dieser Beitrag beschreibt die Arbeit des Center for Research Libraries (CRL), ein Consortium von Institutionen mit bedeutenden wissenschaftlichen und Forschungsbibliotheken. CRL betreibt ein kooperatives Bestandsentwicklungsprogramm, das wissenschaftlichen und Forschungsbibliotheken hilft, Kosten zu reduzieren, in dem es selten vorhandenes, grundlegendes Forschungsmaterial Gelehrten und Forschern zur Ve rf ü g u n g stellt. Das kooperative Bestandsentwicklungsprogramm sammelt, erhalt und macht diese gedruckten, in Mikroform

oder elektronischen Formaten vorliegenden Forschungs-bestände zugänglich. CRL besitzt eine große, zentrale Sammlung, die aus fünf Hauptkomponenten besteht, nach denen Mitgliedsbibliotheken ihre örtlichen Anschaffungs-entscheidungen ausrichten. Diese umfassen Zeitungen weltweit, Reihen mit Schwerpunkt auf ausländischen Titeln, ausländische D i s s e rtationen, retrospektive Sammlungen und regionale Studien. Über den wirtschaftlichen Nutzen einer CRL-Mitgliedschaft wird ebenfalls berichtet.

Der Beitrag ist ein vorläufiger Bericht über ein von der IFLA unterstütztes Projekt, das internationale und nationale Trends in der bibliotheks- und informationswissenschaftlichen Forschung verglich. Basierend auf einem Kernbestand von Zeitschriften in den verschiedenen Ländern und über eine gewisse Zeitspanne hinweg haben die Autoren die beliebtesten Themen, U n t e rthemen und Methoden in bibliotheks und inform a t i o n s -wissenschaftlichen Studien in Australien, China, Finnland, Spanien, der Türkei und in Großbritannien verglichen und haben diese zu internationalen Entwicklungen in Beziehung gesetzt. Der Vergleich hat eine auffallende Variation von Schwerpunkten und Trends bei der Forschung in den untersuchten Ländern ans Licht gebracht. Die Autoren erläutern , daß Unterschiede in nationalen Forschungscharakteristika aus den Unterschieden in den sozialen und kulturellen We rten der Länder erklärt werden können. El CRL lleva a cabo un programa de desarrollo cooperativo de colecciones para ayudar a las bibliotecas universitarias y de investigación a reducir los costes de poner a disposición de los estudiosos materiales primarios de inv estigac ión infrecu entemente guardados. Este artículo es el informe preliminar de un estudio financiado por la IFLA para comparar las tendencias nacionales e i n t e rnacionales de la investigación en Biblioteconomía y Ciencia de la Información (BCI). Los autores, sobre la base de los artículos de investigación publicados durante diversos períodos de tiempo en revistas seleccionadas en cada país, comparan los temas más populares, los subtemas y los métodos en los estudios nacionales de BCI en Australia, China, Finlandia, España, Turquía y el Reino Unido, relacionándolos con las tendencias internacionales. La comparación muestra una not able vari ación de interes es y tendencias de la investigación en los países examinados. Los autores sugieren que las diferencias de los rasgos nacionales de la investigación pueden explicarse por los diferentes valores sociales y culturales existentes en cada país.
