MAY 1ST, 2022– THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER
From the Pastor’s Desk
Today, the third Sunday of Easter, the readings are about events giving evidence to the Resurrection of Jesus. In the first reading, Peter and the other Apostles were dragged before the Sanhedrin, the court of justice in Israel, and were ordered to stop teaching in the name of Jesus. Peter refused to do so, firmly declaring “we must obey God rather than man” to witness that Jesus, whom God exalted as leader and savior, died to grant Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins.” The Apostles rejoiced to be found worthy to suffer in the name of Jesus!
By the grace of God, we know that we too are recipients of Jesus’ sacrificial love. Do we give witness by the way we live and speak that we believe and reciprocate His love? Do we speak out for what we believe or just stay silent when people espouse beliefs contrary to our faith for fear of losing “friends” or creating disputes? We have been redeemed! With this privilege comes the responsibility and the JOY to speak for Jesus so others will realize that He loves them and died for them too! May God fill us with the grace to follow the Apostles’ courageous example of witnessing for Jesus!
In today’s Gospel, we read about the miraculous catch of 153 fish, Jesus’ preparing a meal for the Apostles, and Jesus’ bestowing the primacy on Peter. Jesus instructed the Apostles on where to cast their nets. When Jesus first called the Apostles to follow Him, He said He wants them to be “fishers of men”. The “fish” that the Lord wants them to catch is not limited only to the people from Israel. He wants to bring all people from all nations into His fold, His Word to every “fish in the sea.” By virtue of our Baptism, we too share in Christ’s mission and be fishers of men. Let us joyfully respond to this mandate.
Then we see Jesus eating a meal with His Apostles; a simple meal of fish to prove that His glorified body is indeed risen, needs some sustenance, and is not a ghost. He shares this meal with the Apostles whom He loves, just as He has eaten other meals with them before His death and resurrection, After this, He made Peter the head of the Church, but only after Peter, in humility and perhaps painful embarrassment for having denied Jesus three times, affirmed his love also three times. Jesus questioned Peter about his love before giving him the very important position of heading and serving God’s people. Love is a pre-requisite of true service; we can always serve without love but we cannot love without serving.
The third time Jesus asked, Peter replied, “Lord, you know all things: you know that I love you!” This is such a beautiful, faith-filled statement. We should find comfort in this…that God knows all things, that He knows we are so weak and so sinful, but as long as we stay humble, are contrite and cling to Him, He will always be there for us. He loves us! What blessed assurance! May the grace of Easter continue to fill us with God’s love, peace and joy.

Hoy, tercer domingo de Pascua, las lecturas tratan sobre hechos que dan testimonio de la Resurrección de Jesús. En la primera lectura, Pedro y los demás Apóstoles fueron llevados ante el Sanedrín, el tribunal de justicia de Israel, y se les ordenó que dejaran de enseñar en el nombre de Jesús. Pedro se negó a hacerlo, declarando firmemente que
“debemos obedecer a Dios antes que a los hombres” para testificar que Jesús, a quien Dios exaltó como líder y salvador, murió para conceder a Israel el arrepentimiento y el perdón de los pecados”. ¡Los Apóstoles se regocijaron de ser encontrados dignos de sufrir en el nombre de Jesús!
Por la gracia de Dios, sabemos que nosotros también somos receptores del amor sacrificial de Jesús. ¿Damos testimonio por la forma en que vivimos y hablamos de que creemos y correspondemos a su amor? ¿Hablamos por lo que creemos o simplemente nos quedamos en silencio cuando las personas adoptan creencias contrarias a nuestra fe por temor a perder "amigos" o crear disputas? ¡Hemos sido redimidos! ¡Con este privilegio viene la responsabilidad y el GOZO de hablar por Jesús para que otros se den cuenta de que Él los ama y murió por ellos también! ¡Que Dios nos llene con la gracia de seguir el valiente ejemplo de los Apóstoles de dar testimonio de Jesús!
En el Evangelio de hoy, leemos acerca de la pesca milagrosa de 153 peces, Jesús prepara una comida para los Apóstoles y Jesús otorga la primacía a Pedro. Jesús instruyó a los Apóstoles sobre dónde echar sus redes. Cuando Jesús llamó por primera vez a los Apóstoles para que lo siguieran, dijo que quería que fueran “pescadores de hombres”. El “pez” que el Señor quiere que pesquen no se limita solo al pueblo de Israel. Él quiere traer a todas las personas de todas las naciones a Su redil, Su Palabra a cada "pez en el mar". En virtud de nuestro Bautismo, también nosotros participamos de la misión de Cristo y somos pescadores de hombres. Respondamos con alegría a este mandato.
Luego vemos a Jesús comiendo con Sus Apóstoles; una simple comida de pescado para probar que Su cuerpo glorificado ciertamente resucitó, necesita algún sustento y no es un fantasma. Él comparte esta comida con los Apóstoles a quienes ama, tal como ha comido otras comidas con ellos antes de Su muerte y resurrección. Después de esto, Él nombró a Pedro cabeza de la Iglesia, pero solo después de Pedro, en humildad y tal vez dolorosa vergüenza por habiendo negado a Jesús tres veces, afirmó su amor también tres veces. Jesús interrogó a Pedro sobre su amor antes de darle la posición muy importante de encabezar y servir al pueblo de Dios. El amor es un prerrequisito del verdadero servicio; siempre podemos servir sin amor pero no podemos amar sin servir.
La tercera vez que Jesús preguntó, Pedro respondió: “Señor, tú lo sabes todo: ¡tú sabes que te amo!”. Esta es una declaración tan hermosa y llena de fe. Deberíamos encontrar consuelo en esto... que Dios conoce todas las cosas, que Él sabe que somos tan débiles y tan pecadores, pero mientras nos mantengamos humildes, estemos contritos y nos aferremos a Él, Él siempre estará ahí para nosotros. ¡Él nos ama! ¡Qué bendita seguridad! Que la gracia de la Pascua nos siga llenando del amor, la paz y la alegría de Dios.
