Imágenes e idolatría
"Yo, el Señor, soy tu Dios, no tendrás otros dioses fuera de mí.
No tendrás otros dioses fuera de mí. No te harás estatua ni imagen alguna de lo que hay arriba, en el cielo, abajo, en la tierra, y en las aguas debajo de la tierra.” Ex 20:2-5 El uso de imágenes en la iglesia ha sido una fuente de contención entre los protestantes y los católicos. Los antiguos, acusan a los católicos de adorar ídolos y desobedecer el primer mandamiento. Sin embargo, lo que Dios prohíbe claramente es la idolatría: la adoración de un objeto hecho por el hombre o la sustitución de Dios por un objeto. Por eso dijo: "Yo, el Señor, soy tu Dios.... soy un Dios celoso". Dios no prohíbe el uso de imágenes como medios de adoración. De hecho, él mismo ordenó a Moisés "hacer dos querubines de oro martillado en los extremos de la cubierta.... "Coloca la cubierta encima del arca.... Allí, encima de la cubierta, entre los dos querubines que están sobre el arca de la ley de la alianza, me reuniré contigo y te daré todos mis mandatos" (Ex 25,17-22). No hay nada más claro que eso. Entonces, ¿por qué le pidió Dios a Moisés que utilizara estatuas de ángeles en el santuario del templo?
Dios le dio permiso para usarlas porque las imágenes son medios de adoración. Son recordatorios de la presencia de Dios con sus ángeles y santos. Le ordenó a Moisés que hiciera imágenes de querubines (ángeles) porque en esa época nadie había visto a Dios. Los ángeles eran sus mensajeros y los más cercanos a Dios. Así que tenía sentido utilizarlos como recordatorios de la presencia de Dios. Ahora, con la encarnación del hijo de Dios y los encuentros de la Iglesia con las huestes del cielo, incluidos los ángeles, la Virgen y numerosos santos conocidos, nuestras opciones de imágenes se ampliaron. Sin embargo, lo más importante es recordar que las imágenes NO son ídolos, sino artes sagradas que nos ayudan a sentir la presencia de Dios, de los ángeles y de los santos, la comunión de los santos.
Además, las imágenes son una parte intrincada de nuestras vidas. Hay imágenes en todas partes: vallas publicitarias, películas, televisión, internet, periódicos, revistas, etc. ¿Por qué? Porque las imágenes son poderosas. Influyen en la forma en que vemos el mundo. Influyen, condicionan y controlan nuestros pensamientos y comportamientos. Como se dice, "una imagen vale más que mil palabras". Piensa en la cantidad de poder que tienen las imágenes y las fotografías sobre las personas: el porno, la moda, las imágenes deportivas y otras. Si estas industrias pueden utilizar imágenes poderosas, ¿por qué la Iglesia no puede hacer lo mismo? Como espacio sagrado, una iglesia debería dar a todos los que entran en ella una sensación de Dios, los ángeles, los santos y el Cielo. Por último, la Iglesia católica utiliza las imágenes para enseñar e inspirar a sus fieles a aprender más sobre la fe, crecer en santidad y aspirar a alcanzar la vida eterna.
Images and Idolatry
“I, the LORD, am your God, You shall not have other gods
besides me.
You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow down before them or worship them.” Ex 20:2-5
The use of images in the church has been a source of contention between the Protestants and Catholics. The former, accuse Catholics of worshipping idols and disobeying the first commandment. Yet what God clearly forbids is idolatry – the worship of a man-made object or the replacement of God with an object. That’s why he said, “I, the LORD, am your God…. am a jealous God.” God does not forbid the use of images as worship aids. In fact, he himself commanded Moses to “make two cherubim out of hammered gold at the ends of the cover…. “Place the cover on top of the ark…. There, above the cover between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the covenant law, I will meet with you and give you all my commands” (Ex 25:17-22). It doesn’t get any clearer than that. So why did God ask Moses to use statues of angels in the temple sanctuary?
God gave permission to use them because images are worship aids. They are reminders of God’s presence with his angels and saints. He commanded Moses to make images of cherubim’s (angels) because at the time no one had ever seen God. Angels were his messengers and the closest to God. So, it made sense to use them as reminders of God’s presence. Now, with the incarnation of God’s son and the Church’s encounters with the hosts of heaven including the angels, our Lady, and numerous known saints, our choices of images expanded. However, the most important thing to remember is that images are NOT idols, but sacred arts that help us to feel the presence of God, the angels and the saints - the communion of saints.
Furthermore, images are an intricate part of our lives. There are images everywhere - billboards, movies, tv, internet, newspapers, magazines, etc. Why? Because images are powerful. They impact the way we look at the world. They influence, condition and control our thoughts and behaviors. As people say, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Think about the amount of power images and pictures have over people – porn, fashion, sports pictures and others. If these industries can use powerful images, why can’t the Church do the same? As a sacred space, a church should give everyone who walks into it a sense of God, the angels, the saints and Heaven. Finally, the Catholic Church uses images to teach and inspire her faithful to learn more about the faith, grow in holiness and aspire to attain eternal life.
I remember being in High School and during mass Fr.
O’Sullivan was talking about vocation. By that point in my
life I had been through enough Catholic School education to
know about Vocations whether it be Matrimony, Holy Orders,
or Consecrated Life but that’s not the Vocation Fr. O was
talking about. In fact Fr. O was talking about our universal
vocation which is our call to holiness. Most Catholics don’t
really know about vocations and there are universal and
particular vocations. This week we are talking with our year 2
teens about this and helping them to understand and see their
vocational calling in their lives.

ese momento de mi vida había pasado por suficiente educación
en la escuela católica como para saber sobre las vocaciones, ya
sea el matrimonio, órdenes vocación o la vida consagrada,
pero esa no era la vocación de la que el P. O estaba hablando.

universal que es nuestro llamado a la santidad. La mayoría de

vocaciones universales y particulares. Esta semana estamos
hablando con nuestros adolescentes de segundo año sobre esto
y ayudándoles a entender y ver su llamado vocacional en sus
vidas.

many children are grieving — they may
have lost family members, they are cut
off from their friends and their routines,
and their lives have changed
significantly. Parents can help children
work through their strong emotions by
acknowledging their feelings and encouraging children
to talk about them. Talk with them honestly and simply,
helping them to answer any questions they might have
about why this is happening, or what will happen next.

unconditionally can help them handle strong feelings of
