Pastor’s Corner
In Saint Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians, chapter 13, he writes of the importance of faith, hope, and love.... and, as he says, the greatest of these is love.
Faith is our response to the Grace of God which is freely given to us without any conditions or strings at-tached. All we have to do is ask.. and we will receive.... seek.... and we will find.... knock... and the door will be opened!
Love is the greatest of these three virtues, and we are called to love God with our whole heart, our whole soul, our whole mind, and our whole being. And, what is more difficult is the commandment to love our neighbor as we love our-selves. There is a challenge for us!
But, what about Hope? Do we find ourselves feeling a sense of hopelessness in our lives these days? Every time I pick up the newspaper, or put on the evening news on TV, or listen to the news reports on the radio, I feel a sense of hope-lessness. And, what about in our own lives? Do situations with our health, or our families, or our work situations, or our local communities cause us to feel hopeless?
During the past year I lost both my brother and my best friend from the Seminary to cancer. Then I had to have surgery for a detached retina in my eye. And then other things started to affect me that cause me to lose hope. I never lost my faith, nor my ability to love. But... hope.... that seemed to be more of a challenge and I wonder have many of you have ex-perienced similar situations in your lives?
How do we address these issues on our lives? The easy answers of "Just get over it!" or "This will pass!" or "Snap out of it!" are meaningless ideas that do not help at all. What we need is more prayer, particularity as a faith community.
After the new school year starts and our school fami-lies return from their vacations, we would like to offer a special Mass with a theme of HOPE in our lives and in our families and in our communities. The date has not been set, and we are still in the planning stages. However, Confessions will be of-fered before the Mass, and anyone who attends the Mass will be given the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. This Mass will give us an opportunity to renew our trust in God and in Jesus' message of salva-tion. No one will be asked to share any private information, but prayers will be offered for our loved ones who have died, and for those who are ill, for those who have lost their jobs or their homes, for those who have been victimized by someone else's actions, and for those who have loved ones who are homeless, incarcerated, or have removed themselves from their loved ones.
As I said, we are still in the planning stages. So noth-ing is set in stone yet. However, I want this Mass to be an up-lifting experience for all who attend. And, if it helps our faith community strengthen their hope in our Lord, we will consider celebrating another Mass in Advent and during Lent.
During this week let us ask the Lord to bless us and guide us so that we do not lose our sense of hope, but that we have the strength to put our trust in Jesus!

La Esquina del Párroco
En la primera carta de San Pablo a los Corintios, capítulo 13, el escribe acerca de la importancia de la fe, esperanza y amor... y, como él dice, el más grande de éstos es el amor.
La fe es nuestra respuesta a la gracia de Dios que se da gratuitamente a nosotros sin condiciones ni ataduras. Todo lo que tenemos que hacer es pedir... y recibiremos... buscar... y encontrare-mos... tocar… y se abrirá la puerta.
El amor es la mayor de estas tres virtudes, y estamos lla-mados a amar a Dios con todo nuestro corazón, con toda nuestra alma, con toda nuestra mente y nuestro ser. Y, lo más difícil es el mandamiento de amar a nuestro prójimo como a nosotros mismos. ¡He ahí un reto para nosotros!
Pero, ¿qué de la esperanza? ¿Estos días nos encontramos con una sensación de desesperanza en nuestra vida? Cada vez que leo el periódico, o veo las noticias de la tarde en la televisión o escucho a los informes de noticias en la radio, tengo una sensación de desesperanza. ¿Y qué de nuestras propias vidas? ¿Las situaciones con nuestra salud, o nuestras familias, nuestras situaciones en el trabajo, o en nuestras comunidades locales nos hacen sentir sin esperanza?
El año pasado perdí mi hermano y a mi mejor amigo del seminario debido al cáncer. Después tuve una operación de mi ojo por un desprendimiento de retina. Y después otras cosas empezaron a afectarme por las cuales también perdí la esperanza. Nunca perdí mi fe, ni mi capacidad de amar. Pero... la esperanza... fue un gran desafío. ¿Y me pongo a pensar si muchos de ustedes han experi-mentado situaciones similares en sus propias vidas?
¿Cómo abordamos estos temas en nuestras vidas? La respuestas más sencillas de "ya supéralo!" o "ya va a pasar!" o “Ya reacciona!” son ideas sin sentido que no nos ayudan en lo absoluto. Lo que necesitamos es más oración, particularmente como una comunidad de fe.
Una vez que empiece al año escolar nuevo y las familias de nuestra escuela regresen de sus vacaciones, nos gustaría ofrecer una Misa especial con el tema de la ESPRERANZA en nuestras vidas, nuestras familias y en nuestras comunidades. Todavía esta-mos en la etapa de planificación y por consiguiente no hay una fe-cha fija. Sin embargo, sabemos que se ofrecerán confesiones antes de la misa, y las personas que asistan a la misa tendrán la oportuni-dad de recibir el Sacramento de la unción de los enfermos. Esta misa nos dará la oportunidad de renovar nuestra confianza en Dios y en el mensaje de Jesús de salvación. A nadie se le pedirá compartir su información privada, pero se ofrecerán oraciones por nuestros seres queridos que han muerto y para los que están enfermos, para quienes han perdido sus empleos o sus casas, para aquellos que han sido víctimas de las acciones de otras personas y por aquellos, los cuales sus seres amados se encuentran sin hogar, encarcelados, o se han apartado de sus seres queridos.
Como he dicho, todavía estamos en las etapas de planifi-cación. Sin embargo, quiero que esta misa sea una experiencia de avivamiento para todos aquellos que asistan. Y si esta misa ayuda a nuestra comunidad de fe a fortalecer su esperanza en nuestro Señor, consideraremos celebrar otra misa durante Adviento y Cuaresma.
Durante esta semana le pedimos al Señor que nos bendiga y nos guíe para que no perdamos nuestro sentido de esperanza, más bien que tengamos la fuerza necesaria para poner nuestra confianza en Jesús!
Que el Señor nos siga bendiciendo siempre y en todas las formas,

THEOLOGY ON TAP
After four amazing sessions, Theology on Tap (TOT) at St. Mark has successfully ended its fourth year. Thank you to everyone who has supported us, dedicated prayers to us, donated and spon-sored the event, and to all the volunteers that have worked to have this amazing event. This year we served 133 young adults from St. Mark and across Southern California. The Young Adult Ministry (YAM) is very grateful and enthusiastic in continuing its mission here at St. Mark. Although TOT has ended, YAM will continually be hosting events throughout the year. Plan ahead for safe, fun summer trips
Amusement parks are great places to make memories as a family, but it’s important to plan ahead to maximize fun and keep everyone safe. Go over the family rules in advance, and refresh information on the way there. Make sure that everyone follows the buddy system, with at least two people together at all times. Pick a predetermined meet-up site in the event of separations, and show children where they can go for help (information desk, park security). Keep an eye out for any adults that may approach children, and stay on top of chil-dren’s locations at all times.
