Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
Today we are announced the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ— the awaited Messiah and King who willingly obeys his Father to the point of accepting humiliation, scourging, abandonment, crucifixion and death on a cross to free us from slavery to sin. From the Book of the Prophet Isaiah: “The Lord God is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame.”
Psalm: My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?
From the Letter to the Philippians: “Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness;”

Domingo de Ramos de la Pasión del Señor
Hoy se nos anuncia la pasión de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, el esperado Mesías y Rey que voluntariamente obedece a su Padre hasta el punto de aceptar la humillación, los azotes, el abandono, la crucifixión y la muerte en la cruz para liberarnos de la exclavitud al pecado.
Del Libro del Profets Isaías: “Pero el Señor me ayuda, por eso no quedaré confundido, por eso endurecí mi rostro como roca y sé que no quedaré avergonzado”.
Salmo: Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado?
De la Carta a los Filipenses: “Cristo, siendo Dios, no consideró que debía aferrarse a las prerrogativas de su condición divina, sino que, por el contrario, se anonadó a sí mismo, tomando la condición de siervo, y se hizo semejante a los hombres”.
Del Evangelio según San Marcos: Cuando se le pregunta a Jesús: “¿Eres tú el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios bendito?” Jesús responde: “Sí lo soy. Y un día verán cómo el Hijo del hombre está sentado a la derecha del Todopoderoso y cómo viene entre las nubes del cielo”.
SUNDAY REFLECTION Forget Me Not
“Once again the high priest interrogated Him: ‘Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?’
Then Jesus answered: ‘I AM.’ ” ––Mark 14:61-62 Jesus has entered Jerusalem. Our forty-day penitential journey nears completion. Lent ends when we begin the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday evening. Ash Wednesday seems like only yesterday. Have we answered the Lord’s call to prayer, fasting and almsgiving? It’s not too late! Our procrastination keeps good company. The apostles were also often slow to catch on to the Lord’s revelations (see Jn 12:16). Don’t despair. Cling to the Church’s liturgical schedule over the upcoming week — it may turn out to be the best week of our lives.
As we enter Holy Week, be eager to tell others about the amazing liturgies awaiting us. With the Psalmist say, “I will proclaim Your name to my brethren; in the midst of the assembly I will praise You” (Ps 22:23).
On Holy Thursday, be awed as Jesus ordains His first priests and gifts us His Body and Blood (see Lk 22:17-20). At the celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, reflect on Jesus’ sacrifice. “And it was thus that He humbled Himself, obediently accepting even death, death on a cross!” (Phil 2:8) Then rejoice with the Church as many new Catholics enter into full communion with His Body at Holy Saturday’s Easter Vigil. Finish with a flourish on Resurrection Sunday, “for it was impossible that death should keep its hold on Him” (Acts 2:24).

REFLEXIÓN DOMINICAL No Me Olvides
El Sumo Sacerdote lo interrogó nuevamente: ¿Eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios bendito?
Jesús respondió: “YO LO SOY” (Marcos 14:61-62).
Jesús entró en Jerusalén. Nuestro camino de penitencia de cuarenta días se acerca a su fin. La cuaresma acaba cuando empieza la misa de la última cena en el Jueves Santo. El miércoles de ceniza parece que fue ayer. ¿Hemos respondido a la llamada del Señor para orar, ayunar y donar en esta cuaresma? ¡Aún no es tarde! Nuestra dejadez no es la única en el mundo. A menudo los apóstoles también son lentos para comprender las revelaciones del Señor (ver Jn 12:16). No desesperes. Hay que atenerse al calendario litúrgico de la Iglesia de la semana siguiente. Puede resultar que sea la mejor semana de nuestras vidas. Según nos adentramos en la Semana Santa, hay que mostrarse entusiasmado de decir a otros la maravilla litúrgica que nos espera. Como dice salmista: “Yo anunciaré tu Nombre a mis hermanos, te alabaré en medio de la asamblea” (Sal 22:23).
En el Jueves Santo, maravíllate cuando Jesús ordena a sus primeros sacerdotes y nos entrega Su cuerpo y sangre (ver Lc 22:17-20). En la celebración de la pasión del Señor en el Viernes Santo, reflexiona sobre el sacrificio de Jesús. “Se humilló hasta aceptar por obediencia la muerte y muerte de cruz” (Fil 2:8).
Entonces alégrate con la Iglesia porque muchos católicos nuevos van a entrar en comunión plena con el Cuerpo de Cristo en la Vigilia Pascual del Sábado Santo, que acaba con una gloriosa resurrección en el domingo, “porque no era posible que la muerte tuviera dominio sobre Él” (Hch 2:24).

Saint Francis of Paola
Hermit, Founder of the Order of Minims April 2
Founder of the Order of the Minims, patron
saint of Calabria and of the Italian seafarers,
he is venerated as a thaumaturge and
protector of the poor, who in the Kingdom of
Naples ruled by the Angevins, suffered from
serious neglect and injustice.
He was born in Paola, now province of Cosenza, on 27 March 1416. Afflicted as a child by a severe infection of one eye, his parents entrusted him to the intercession of Francis of Assisi: if he recovered, he would wear the Franciscan habit for a whole year. After his recovering, when he was 15 years old he entered the convent of St. Marco Argentano (Cosenza) in oder to fulfill the vow made by his parents. There, he immediately showed his inclination to prayer and his powerful gifts of piety, along with some supernatural manifestations. At the end of his stay at the convent, he undertook a pilgrimage with his parents in search of the most suitable religious life for him. He went to Assisi, Montecassino, Rome, Loreto and Monte Luco. In Rome he was troubled by the opulence of the papal court and commented: "Our Lord was not like that". This was the first sign of his reforming soul.
Hermit
Back in Paola, he began a period of hermit life in an inaccessible place owned by his family. Gradually other people joined Francis, regarding him as a spiritual leader. Francis and his companions built a chapel and three dormitories. They received diocesan approval in 1452 to establish an oratory, a monastery and a church. Even the nobility of Paola, enthusiastic about Francis' experience, helped as simple workers in the construction of the buildings.
Papal Approvals
Francis' reputation for holiness spread rapidly: in 1467 Pope Paul II sent one of his emissaries to Paola for news of the hermit. After presenting his report on the monastery, the papal legate himself decided to join the community.
On 17 May 1474, Pope Sixtus IV officially recognized the new order with the name of the Hermits of St. Francis of Assisi. The rule was formally approved by Pope Alexander VI, who changed their name into the Minims.
The cloak on the sea
Loved and sought after as a spiritual guide, Francis was also considered the only authority able to oppose the abuses of the Aragonese court in the kingdom of Naples, standing at the side of the poor.
Some prodigious facts were attributed to him. In 1464, a year of severe famine, some workers were on their way to the plain of Terranova to find work. In Galatro (Reggio Calabria) they came upon Saint Francis heading for Sicily. He asked them for some bread but they themselves were hungry and without anything to eat. Then Francis said: "Give me your saddlebags, for there is bread inside". And so it was. In their bags the workmen found hot and steamy white bread. And the more they ate, the more it grew.
According to another story, a boatman refused to take Francis and his companions to Sicily. The saint then spread his cloak on the water so that they could cross the strait. Another "charisma" attributed to the hermit was the gift of prophecy, as when he foresaw the fall of the city of Otranto into the hands of the Turks in 1480 and its subsequent reconquest by the king of Naples.
From the hermitage to the court
Brought by Neapolitan merchants, the fame of Francis arrived in France at the court of Louis XI, who was ill at the time and who asked Pope Sixtus IV to bring the hermit to his bedside. Both the Pope and the King of Naples saw in this invitation the possibility of political advantages. Francis, however, obeyed the papal imposition with difficulty: he was used to his hermitage and would reluctantly adapt to court life. On his arrival, King Louis XI knelt at his feet; although he never recovered, the action of the hermit at court led to good relations between the papacy and the French monarchy. Francis was approached by common people as well as by academics in search of spiritual guidance. He lived in France for 25 years, working the land as a peasant and increasing his reputation as a reformer and a penitent. Through the aggregation of some Benedictines and Franciscans, his Calabrian congregation abandoned the hermit life for the cenobitic one, leading to the foundation of the secular Third Order and to that of the Nuns. Their respective rules were definitively approved by Julius II on 28 July 1506.
Death and canonization
Francis died in Tours on 2 April 1507. His fame soon spread through Europe thanks to the three branches of the family of the Minims (friars, nuns and the third order). He was canonized on 1 May 1519, only twelve years after his death, during the pontificate of Pope Leo X, to whom he had predicted his election to the papal throne when he was still a child. On 13 April 1562, some Huguenots forced his tomb and on finding his body uncorrupted set it on fire. The few remaining relics are kept in various convents of the Minims, including Palermo, Milazzo and Paola.

que, en el Reino de Nápoles regentado por los
angevinos, sufrían grave abandono y abusos.
Nació en Paula, hoy provincia de Cosenza, Italia, el 27 de marzo de 1416. De niño sufrió una grave infección en un ojo, sus padres lo encomendaron a la intercesión de San Francisco de Asís: en caso de curación vestiría el hábito franciscano por un año. Perfectamente curado, para cumplir el voto ingresó a los 15 años en el convento de San Marcos Argentano (Cosenza), donde pronto manifestó su propensión a la oración y firme piedad. Al concluir su estancia en el convento, emprendió con sus padres una peregrinación, buscando una vida religiosa adecuada para él. Fue a Asís, Montecassino, Roma, Loreto y Monte Luco. En Roma, turbado por el lujo de la corte papal comentó: «Nuestro Señor no iba de esa manera». Era el primer indicio de su alma reformadora.
Ermitaño
Volvió a Paula, comenzó un periodo de vida como ermitaño, en un lugar áspero en la propiedad de su familia. Otros se asociaron poco a poco a esta experiencia y, cada vez más numerosos, reconocieron su guía espiritual. Con los suyos construyó una capilla y tres dormitorios. En 1452 obtuvo la aprobación diocesana y la facultad de instituir un oratorio, un monasterio y una iglesia. Los mismos nobles de Paula, entusiasmados por la experiencia de Francisco, contribuyeron como simples obreros en la construcción de los edificios.
Aprobaciones papales
La fama de santidad de Francisco se difundió rápidamente: en 1467, el papa Pablo II envió a Paula a un emisario para tener noticias sobre el eremita. Después de haber presentado su informe positivo sobre el monasterio, el mismo legado pontificio decidió sumarse a la comunidad. El 17 de mayo de 1474, el papa Sixto IV reconoció oficialmente la nueva orden con la denominación: Congregación eremítica paulana de S. Francisco de Asís. El reconocimiento de la regla con el nombre actual llegó más tarde con el papa Alejandro VI.
Su manto sobre el mar
Amado y buscado como guía espiritual, a Francisco se le consideraba como única autoridad capaz de oponerse a los abusos de la corte aragonesa en el reino de Nápoles, poniéndose de lado de los pobres. Sobre ello narran algunos hechos prodigiosos atribuidos a él. En 1464, año de grave carestía, algunos obreros se dirigían hacia la llanura de Terranova para encontrar trabajo. En Galatro (Reggio Calabria) encontraron a San Francisco que iba a Sicilia. Él les pidió un poco de pan, pero ellos estaban a su vez con hambre y no tenían nada para comer. Entonces, Francisco les dijo: «Denme sus alforjas, porque dentro hay pan». Así fue: en sus pobres alforjas, los obreros encontraron pan blanco, caliente y humeante. Y cuanto más comían, más aumentaba.
Otro episodio que se cuenta es el de un barquero que no quiso llevar a Francisco y sus compañeros a Sicilia. El santo extendió entonces su manto sobre el mar y así pudieron cruzar el estrecho. Otro ‘carisma’ atribuido al santo fue la profecía, como cuando predijo que la ciudad de Otranto iba a caer en manos de los turcos, en 1480, y luego iba a ser reconquistada por el rey de Nápoles.
Del eremitorio a la corte
Llevada por los comerciantes napolitanos, la fama de Francisco llegó a Francia, a la corte de Luis XI, entonces enfermo, el cual pidió al papa Sixto IV que hiciese llegar al Eremita paulano a su cabecera. Tanto el papa como el rey vieron en esta invitación posibilidades de ventajas políticas. Pero Francisco obedeció con fatiga a la imposición papal: estaba acostumbrado a su eremitorio y con disgusto se iba a poder adaptar a la vida de corte. A su llegada, el rey Luis XI se arrodilló a sus pies, nunca obtuvo la curación, per la acción del ermitaño en la corte llevó a buenas relaciones entre el papado y la monarquía francesa. También allí, Francisco fue apreciado por los humildes, así como por los doctores académicos en busca de una guía espiritual. Permaneció 25 años en Francia, trabajando también como campesino, mientras crecía su fama de reformador y penitente. Al sumarse algunos benedictinos y franciscanos, la congregación calabresa abandonó la vida eremítica por la cenobítica. Además, el cambio llevó a la fundación, primero de la Tercera Orden seglar y luego de las Monjas. Las reglas respectivas fueron aprobadas por Julio II, el 28 de julio de 1506.
Muerte y canonización
Francisco se apagó en Tours el 2 de abril de 1507. Su fama se difundió pronto en Europa, a través de las tres ramas de la familia Mínima (frailes, monjas y terciarios). Fue canonizado el 1° mayo de 1519, solamente doce años después de su muerte, durante el pontificado del papa León X, al cual había predicho su elección pontificia cuando era niño. El 13 de abril de 1562, algunos hugonotes forcejearon su tumba y al encontrar su cuerpo incorrupto le dieron fuego. Sus pocas reliquias se conservan en los conventos de los Mínimos, entre ellos en Palermo, Milazzo y Paula.
