This is the fundamental question that must be asked: who is man? Man is a being who bears within his heart a thirst for the infinite, a thirst for truth – a truth which is not partial but capable of explaining life’s meaning – since he was created in the image and like-ness of God. The grateful recognition that life is an inestima-ble gift, then, leads to the discovery of one’s own profound dignity and the inviolability of every single person. Hence the first step in education is learning to recognize the Crea-tor’s image in man, and consequently learning to have a profound respect for every human being and helping others to live a life consonant with this supreme dignity.

~Pope Benedict XVI, Message for the World Day of Peace, January 1, 2012

If you missed our Spiritual Adoption weekend Mar 3-4, there are additional pledge cards in a small white basket in the vestibule. Just fill it out and leave the pledge part in the bas-ket.

“It is our vocation…to set people’s hearts ablaze, to do what the Son of God did, who came to light a fire on the earth in order to set it aflame with his love. It is not enough for me to love God if my neighbor does not love him. I must love my neighbor as the image of God and the object of his love…I must act in such a way that people love their Creator and each other in mutual char-ity for the love of God who loved them so much that he delivered up his own Son to death for them.”St. Vincent ( Manual, p.54-55)

PRAYER OF THE WEEK

March 11, 2012, Third Sunday of Lent

O God, author of every mercy and of all goodness,

who in fasting, prayer and almsgiving have shown us a remedy for sin,

look graciously on this confession of our lowliness,

that we, who are bowed down by our conscience, may always be lifted up by your mercy.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Reflection:

Undertake an examination of conscience this week and pray for God’s loving mercy.

From the Pastor/Del Pastor

As we are now well into Lent, we can take a look at what it means to turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. A good place to start would be the Ten Commandments. The reading from Exo-dus presents us with one of the first listings of the Commandments. In this passage, God explains some of the laws to show how serious they are. For the first one, God includes making images to be used for worship.

In the days of Moses, people of other cul-tures made images of their gods and declared that the image was the god, and so should be wor-shipped. The LORD wanted his people to remember that God cannot be limited to an image or idea. That is still true today. Our images and statues are meant to help us pray to God, not to that work of art.

On the other hand, some people give a super-stitious meaning to religious articles. Burying a statue to help sell your house could be one example. If you want to ask for a favor from God, just ask Him. God is much more likely to listen to a sincere prayer than a superstitious action.

God also emphasizes some commands by du-plicating them. He tells us not to steal from others, and also not to plan to steal from our neighbor. The same with adultery: Planning it is just as bad as do-ing it.

Jesus simplified all these commands when he reminds us to love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself. Let’s remember that as we turn away from sin to serving God better during Lent.

The confirmation class at the Chapel of the Holy Cross needs service hours opportunities, please call Paola Santos at

256-738-6103 if you know of any activities where the kids can help.

The general rule of the church is: “All persons who have completed their 14th year are bound by the law of absti-nence; all adults are bound by the law of fast up to the

begin-ning of their 60th year. Nevertheless, pastors and parents are to see to it that minors who are not bound by the law of fast and abstinence are educated in an authentic sense of penance.” (Canon 1253)

Abstinence means abstaining from meat. Fasting means one full meal a day, with two lighter meals in the course of a day to maintain strength. The Fridays of Lent in the United States are days of abstinence from meat.

Ash Wednesday (February 22nd) and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence from meat.
