From the Pastor’s Desk
The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord concludes the Christmas season. We will take down the Christmas decorations and enter into Ordinary Time on Monday. Looking ahead on the calendar, I see that Lent and Easter come early this year. Ash Wednesday is on February 10 – just one month away. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The spiritual work at hand is to be found in Ordinary Time.
This may sound like a bland liturgical season, but the stuff of our faith is never bland. During the Sundays in Ordinary Time, we will hear about the life-giving ministry of Jesus as told in the Gospel of Saint Luke. Saint Luke is a superb storyteller. He relates Jesus’ preaching and miracles in an engaging way, emphasizing our Lord’s care and concern for the poor. I would recommend taking an afternoon and reading the entirety of Saint Luke’s Gospel in one sitting. This is a worthwhile exercise that helps us get to know Jesus more deeply. Also, please remember that we are still in the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. Giving and receiving forgiveness remains a focus for us. We should try to find concrete ways to share the Lord’s mercy with others. Perhaps God will give us new opportunities to practice the spiritual and corporal works of mercy in 2016.
Finally, if you were at the 4:00 p.m. Mass on New Year’s Eve, you know that an EMS crew attended to Eleanor Bobulski that evening. She wanted to share this note with you: “I would like to thank all of the people who offered care and encouragement and prayers during the 4:00 p.m. Mass on December 31. I suffered an episode of severe chest pains, which thankfully did not turn out to be a heart attack. It was truly an action embodying the Year of Mercy that involved the parishioners of Christ the King parish. Again, thanks to all involved. May God bless all of you.”

The Sisters’ Corner
The sisters would like to invite everyone to join them for new Bible Studies in the New Year! Bring the entire family! The Bible Studies will meet on Mondays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. and on Tuesdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m. (This event is in Spanish.)

Ms. Amy Bittner will be available for free legal counsel in the church vestibule this Monday, January 11, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Ms. Bittner deals primarily with issues pertaining to immigration. She visits our parish on the second Monday of each month. However, in February Ms. Bittner will make her visit to Christ the King on Monday, February 1. Desde el Escritorio del Párroco
Con la Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor concluye la temporada de Navidad. Quitaremos las decoraciones de Navidad y entraremos al tiempo ordinario el lunes. Mirando el calendario me doy cuenta de que la Cuaresma y la Pascua vienen pronto este año. El Miércoles de Ceniza es el 10 de febrero – a sólo un mes. Pero no nos adelantemos. El trabajo espiritual que nos espera está en el Tiempo Ordinario.
Esto puede sonar como un tiempo litúrgico suave, pero las cosas de nuestra fe nunca son suaves. Durante los domingos del Tiempo Ordinario, escucharemos sobre el ministerio vivificador de Jesús, según el Evangelio de San Lucas. San Lucas es un excelente narrador de historias. Relata la predicación y milagros de Jesús de una forma atractiva, enfatizando la atención y la preocupación de nuestro Señor por los pobres. Les recomiendo tomar una tarde y leer todo el Evangelio de San Lucas, en una sola sesión. Este es un ejercicio que vale la pena que nos ayuda a conocer a Jesús más profundamente.
También recuerden que todavía estamos en el Año Jubilar Extraordinario de la Misericordia. Dar y recibir el perdón sigue siendo nuestro centro de atención. Tratemos de encontrar maneras concretas de compartir la misericordia del Señor con los demás. Tal vez Dios nos dará nuevas oportunidades para practicar las obras espirituales y corporales de misericordia en el año 2016.
Por último, si usted estuvo en la Misa de las 4:00 p.m. la víspera de Año Nuevo, sabe que un equipo de EMS asistió a Eleanor Bobulski esa noche. Ella quiso compartir esta nota con ustedes: "Quiero agradecer a todas las personas que me brindaron atención, apoyo y oraciones durante la misa de las 4:00 p.m. el 31 de diciembre. Tuve un episodio de dolor severo en el pecho que, por suerte, no llegó a ser un ataque al corazón. Fue realmente una acción que simboliza el Año de la Misericordia que involucró a los feligreses de la parroquia de Christ the King. Una vez más, gracias a todos los involucrados. We are in Phase Three of the grant process with the Catholic Foundation. If we are approved for a grant, we will be ready to replace the windows on the Dover Road side of the school building, which is the next step in our “Cool the School” project. The windows that we have already replaced have made a tremendous impact in our community. The kids have a much better place to learn. Thank you to those who have contributed to “Cool the School!”

January is Poverty in America Awareness Month. More than 46 million Americans live in poverty. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is the domestic anti-poverty program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops. Learn more by visiting www.povertyusa.org. Stand Against Violence Week is January 15-22. In 1994, the U.S. Catholic Bishops issued a pastoral letter entitled “Confronting a Culture of Violence: A Catholic Framework for Action.” As a response to the pastoral letter, parishes and dioceses across the United States are called to focus on peacemaking and policy efforts against violence from January 15 (the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.) to January 22 (the anniversary of the tragic Roe v. The annual Respect Life Mass and Day of Prayer for the legal protection of unborn children will be on Friday, January 22, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Cathedral. Bishop Campbell will be the celebrant. Catholic Youth Summer Camp is Ohio’s one and only week- long, residential high adventure camp for students entering grades 6-12.
