Preparing Your Child for an MRI
(Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
Can my child eat or drink the day of the exam?
It depends on whether your child will be awake or asleep for the exam. If you think your child cannot lie still for 30 minutes, the child will receive medicine to help him or her sleep. You must talk with your doctor about this ahead of time.
If your child will be awake during the exam, he or she may eat or drink as usual. If your child will be asleep for the exam:
• Your child must see a doctor for a physical exam within
30 days of this test.
• No solid food, milk products or tube feedings for 6 hours before the exam.
• Infants may have breast milk until 4 hours before the exam. • Children may have clear liquids until 2 hours before the exam.
– Clear liquids include any non-carbonated (non-fizzy) drink that you can see through. For example: water, Pedialyte, apple juice.
– Clear liquids do not include milk, formula, pop, orange juice, tomato juice, prune juice or any juice with pulp.

Is there anything else I need to know?
MRI uses strong magnets, so your child cannot wear any metal in the exam room. If you will stay with your child, you cannot wear or carry anything with metal either. Things that cannot be worn include:
Hearing aids
Watches, jewelry, safety pins, hairpins
Clothing with snaps or other metal hardware Contact lenses may be worn during the exam.
Do not bring credit cards or anything that has a magnetic strip into the room because they will be erased.

Is there any reason my child cannot have an MRI?
We want to make sure it is safe for your child to have an MRI. We will ask you to fill out a checklist before the exam. Your child cannot have an MRI if he or she has pacer wires, a pacemaker or certain kinds of electronic implants.
If your child has ever had a piece of metal in the eye, he or she will need to have an X-ray. If the X-ray shows that no metal is left in the eye, your child may have an MRI.

What will happen during the exam?
An MRI uses a machine with a large magnet and radio waves to see inside the body. A computer turns the radio waves into pictures of the body’s insides. The exam is painless.
The test usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. We may need to give your child a special dye (called contrast) by IV. This will help us see the pictures better.
• Your child will lie on a special table that will move into the MRI machine. The machine is like a tunnel. It is important that your child lie very still to get clear pictures.
• Your child will hear knocking and tapping sounds during the exam. We may give your child earplugs to reduce the noise or headphones to listen to the radio or a CD. (Your child may bring a CD from home to listen to.) If you stay in the exam room, you will be given earplugs as well.
• The MRI staff can see, hear and talk to your child through a speaker.
When will I know the exam results?
The radiologist (X-ray doctor) will write a report of your child’s test results. Your family doctor will discuss the results with you at your next visit.

How can I get my child ready for the exam?
• Explain the exam in words your child will understand. Ask what she or he wants to know. Many children want to know if the exam hurts or what it will feel like. Be honest but calm with your child.
• Very young children should be told the day of the exam. They do not need to know too far in advance.
• Talk with your child about the importance of doing what the staff asks.
• Bring along a blanket, toys, a pacifier or favorite books to provide comfort during the test.
• Please arrange care for your other children so that you are there for your child during the exam. You may not bring other children into the exam room.

After the exam, you or your insurance carrier will receive two bills, one for the hospital charge and one for the doctor’s charge.
