St. Francis of Assisi Parish

Parroquia San Francisco de Asís

We, the Parish of St. Francis of Assisi, guided by the Holy Spirit, are a Christian Community called by God to take part in the mission of love and truth in the world. With firm faith in Jesus the Christ and the

Holy Gospel, we find our strength through prayer and the Sacraments, that we may become God’s serv-ants to our sisters and brothers

Sunday 8:00 AM 9:15 AM 10:30AM 12:30 PM Monday 8:00 AM 7:00 PM Tuesday 8:00 AM 7:00 PM Wednesday 8:00 AM 7:00 PM Thursday 8:00 AM 7:00 PM Friday 8:00 AM 7:30 PM Saturday 8:00 AM 5:30 PM 7:00 PM Sunday 8:00 AM 9:15 AM 10:30AM 12:30 PM Dear Parishioners:

The friars who staff St. Francis Parish belong to the Capuchin Prov-ince of the Sacred Stigmata. The first friars who came from Tuscany were sent by Pope Pius XII in order to min-ister to the Italian immigrants in New York and its surroundings. As our province grew in numbers we were asked by our minister general in Rome to send missionaries to Australia, Sau-di Arabia, Gambia in Africa and most recently to Mexico.

Now, because of shrinking numbers at home and in Africa which no longer needs our help, friars from India have come to help us here in the United States. My conversations with brother Capuchins from India have taught me a great deal. One told me of the home of his parents where there is no water or well. The women of the town have to walk long distances in order to carry buckets of water from the nearest river. In order to avoid the loss of water from the splashing which is caused from the movement of walk-ing, the women place a block of wood into the water. This block of wood has come to be known as the Jesus block. It is reminiscent of the Gospel we heard proclaimed today at Mass. Jesus seemed to have been asleep. When he awoke he rebuked the stormy sea. The disciples asked, “Who is this that the wind and the sea obey him?” So it is with us. When we are confronted with the storms of ill health, finances, rela-tionships, etc. which make us feel like we are doomed we cry out, “Lord save us!” It is then that we remember that Jesus is in the boat. May these mo-ments strengthen our faith in Him. Love and Prayers,

Bro. John

Notas del Pastor

Estimados feligreses:

How will the parish goals be deter-mined? Parish goal calculations are based on 100

percent of the 2013, offertory (first collections) us-ing the reported information for unrestricted plate and donations.

How much will my parish receive as part of this campaign? As part of the We Are Living Stones

Capital Campaign, $40 million will be allocated to help parishes meet their local needs. After the

Works of Mercy target is met, 50% of all funds

raised will stay at the parish for projects deter-mined by local leadership.

Is our parish goal an assessment? No, the

es-tablished parish goals are not an assess-ment. However, the first monies raised at each parish will be allocated to help meet the parish’s “Works of Mercy” target. All parishes are asked to conduct a “good faith effort” and work with their as-signed campaign director to achieve their goal. If, after conducting a “good faith effort” the parish does not meet its goal, the parish will not be as-sessed the balance.

When will parishes begin to receive their 50 percent share? Parishes in Block 1 can expect to

receive their first distribution of 50% of monies col-lected in October of 2015. These payments will continue every quarter thereafter until the conclu-sion of the campaign. If the parish exceeds goal, they will receive 60% of all funds redeemed above the We Are Living Stones goal on the same time-line as stated above.

How will the campaign affect our parish offerto-ry? In the short term, offertory giving should

re-main level, with a possible small fluctuation up or down. We make sure we communicate that parish-ioners are asked to consider a greater sacrifice and commitment to their Archdiocesan Church above and beyond their regular offertory giving, and should not lower their gifts to their parish in order to make a gift to this effort.
