TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE La cruda realidad de nuestro continente es que América es tierra de mártires. Esta semana recordamos el martirio del indígena quechua Segundo Francisco Guamán de Ecuador. Como la mayor parte de los indígenas americanos, los quechuas consideran la tierra como pertenencia de la comunidad humana. De ella come y vive todo ser viviente. Desde la llegada de los europeos la tierra americana ha sido explotada y con ella los indígenas también. El siglo pasado unos campesinos ecua-torianos dirigidos por Segundo Francis-co Francis-comenzaron a reunirse Francis-con el Minis-terio de Agricultura y el Instituto Ecua-toriano de Reforma Agraria y Colo-nización. Que agencias civiles tomen interés por los derechos del indígena es siempre "buena nueva". Lamentable-mente lo que es "buena nueva" para la muchedumbre pobre es "mala noticia" para los poderosos. Uno de éstos decid-ió vengarse en contra de los campesin-os. En su rabia, asesinó al joven Segun-do Francisco de sólo 25 años de edad. Pero su muerte, como la de todo mártir, no fue en vano. Su sangre derramada sobre la madre tierra ha ido sembrando más movimientos por los derechos de los indígenas.

THE DEMANDS OF DISCIPLESHIP

Today we encounter readings that already have a Lenten feel about them. Nineveh undergoes a forty-day fast, the psalmist reminds us that God alone can show sinners the way, Paul shows us how fleeting the things and events of this world are, and Jesus cries out "Repent!" before he calls his new followers. "Come after me," Je-sus says, but if we are to truly live out the commands and demands of our discipleship through baptism, we must first know our need for conversion, our repentance, our need to believe in the gospel fully. Today's Gospel opens with the stark reminder of what befell John the Baptist for completely living out his vocation as the herald of Christ and the gospel: he was arrested, imprisoned, and martyred. Though few of us will experience consequenc-es that extreme, we must all be ready to risk some sort of rejection as, heed-ing the call of Jesus, we live out the kingdom of God at hand, repent of our sins, and believe in the good news of salvation.

LAS EXIGENCIAS DE SER DISCÍPULO

Hoy ya encontramos lecturas con el tono penitencia de Cuaresma. Nínive ayuna durante cuarenta días, el salmista nos recuerda que sólo Dios puede indi-carles el camino a los pecadores, san Pablo nos muestra que todas las cosas y los acontecimientos de este mundo son transitorios y Jesús nos dice:

"Arrepiéntanse" antes de llamar a sus nuevos seguidores. "Síganme", dice Jesús, pero si realmente vivimos los mandamientos y las exigencias de ser discípulos por el Bautismo, nos daremos cuenta de nuestra necesidad de conversión, de nuestro arrepentimiento, nuestra necesidad de creer plenamente en el Evangelio. El Evangelio de hoy comienza recordándonos lo que le sucedió a Juan Bautista por vivir ple-namente su vocación como heraldo de Cristo y del Evangelio: fue arrestado, encarcelado y martirizado. Si bien po-cos de nosotros sufriremos consecuen-cias tan extremas, todos debemos estar preparados para enfrentar algún tipo de rechazo por hacerle caso al llamado de Jesús, vivir el Reino de Dios que está próximo, arrepentirnos de nuestros pe-cados y creer en la buena nueva de salvación.

Hội đồng các Giáo hội viếng thăm Trung quốc

Chuyến viếng thăm Trung quốc từ ngày 7-6 tháng Giêng 2018 của một phái đoàn thuộc tổ chức đại kết “Hội đồng Thế giới các Giáo hội” (WCC: World Council of Churches) là một chuyến viếng thăm lịch sử.

Cuộc viếng thăm cho thấy WCC rất quan tâm đến Trung quốc, nơi con số Kitô hữu gia tăng nhanh chóng trong vòng 30 năm nay, và có thể sẽ trở thành quốc gia với nhiều Kitô hữu nhất trên thế giới. Được biết Hội đồng Kitô giáo Trung quốc là thành viên của WCC từ năm 1991. Vì Giáo hội Công giáo không phải là thành viên của WCC và số tín hữu Chính thống giáo ở Trung Quốc còn ít ỏi, mục đích chính của chuyến viếng thăm là gặp gỡ các nhóm Tin lành.

Tại Thượng Hải, phái đoàn WCC gặp gỡ giới lãnh đạo các tổ chức Giáo hội được chính phủ chính thức công nhận, bao gồm Hội đồng Kitô giáo Trung quốc và Phong trào Yêu nước Tam tự, cũng như các sinh viên của chủng viện thần học ở miền đông Trung quốc. Cũng có một buổi gặp gỡ với các viên chức nhà nước đặc trách các vấn đề tôn giáo.

Đằng khác, trong chương trình không có cuộc phỏng vấn với các đại diện của các “giáo hội tại gia” không chính thức đang phát triển nhanh chóng. WCC nói rằng “Từ khi Trung quốc mở cửa với thế giới vào cuối những năm 1970, ngày càng có thêm sự khoan dung tôn giáo. Số người được rửa tội đã gia tăng đáng kể.” Theo các nhà quan sát, các Giáo hội có số tăng trưởng lớn nhất là các Giáo hội “không đăng ký,” ở ngoài sự kiểm soát của nhà nước. Trước đây thường được gọi là “Giáo hội thầm lặng,” nay các Giáo hội này được tổ chức tốt hơn và thu hút rất nhiều người. Các Giáo hội này tồn tại trong một “vùng xám” hợp pháp, không được phép, nhưng cũng không chính thức bị cấm, mặc dù thỉnh thoảng vẫn có những cuộc đàn áp.

Còn theo thông tin từ cuộc “thăm dò đời sống tâm linh của người Trung quốc,” do quỹ John Templeton tài trợ, số Kitô hữu tại Trung Hoa được cho là đã tăng lên 2.4%, bao gồm 30 triệu người Tin lành và chỉ có 3 triệu người Công giáo trong dân số 1 tỉ 300 triệu người. Các ước tính khác cho rằng con số thực sự có thể còn cao hơn.

Theo Marie-Eva Reny, giáo sư khoa chính trị tại đại học Montréal, Canada, chuyên về vấn đề xã hội và tôn giáo dưới các chế độ độc tài, Hội thánh Tin lành Trung quốc lớn hàng thứ hai trên thế giới, chỉ sau Hoa Kỳ, tong đó có 80 phần trăm không ghi danh chính thức.

The population in the Holy Land has dropped from over 65% to under 2% just within the last ten years.

Crafting the religious articles is the primary means for providing for the livelihood of Christian families in the

Holy Land.

San Martin Parish would like to thank the Congregation for their donation and letting them know the St. Vincent de Paul Society distributed gifts to 52 children from 18 families.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADI-TION

One of the most unusual Catholic churches in the world is in Amster-dam: Our Lord in the Attic, or as the locals say, "Ons Lieve Heer op Sol-der." What looks like a beautiful narrow brick mansion alongside a canal is a clever disguise for a very well-preserved seventeenth-century home and a secret church. During the Reformation, the Netherlands was divided into Protestant Holland and the Spanish Netherlands, now known as Belgium, a Catholic stronghold. Protestant reformers seized all the Catholic parishes in Holland and "de-Catholicized" them. New laws forbade the celebration of the Mass in public. St. Nicholas Church was renamed "Old Church" by the new owners, and the dispos-sessed Catholics got to work "hiding" St. Nicholas Parish in the upper floors of this mansion. Other Catholics did the same thing, but this is the only hidden church that survives today. Sunday Mass is still celebrated here.

It's a beautiful hideaway, with noth-ing spared in regard to marble, gild-ing, a pipe organ, and classic Dutch painting. A few steps away, the Old Church, begun in 1250, stands emp-tied of the statues and carvings of its Catholic days, its windows replaced by plain glass. The new tenants gave up when it came to the ceiling, which is still painted with saints, biblical scenes, and merchant ships. The Dutch reformers were tolerant sorts, and as long as the Catholics kept out of sight, they were out of mind. Catholicism was at last toler-ated in Holland after 1853, but in 1924 when the International Eucha-ristic Congress was held in Amster-dam, processions of Catholics were still forbidden in the streets. Today, Roman Catholics are about 19 per-cent of the population, and there's no need for any of them to hide in the attic.

Civic Center Plaza in San Francisco on Saturday, January 27th, 2018. More

The day will begin with Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral at 9:30 a.m. to ask the Lord’s blessing on the sanctity of life. After Mass all are invited to gather at Civic Center Plaza for the Informational Faire and Walk for Life Rally before the 1.3 mile walk down Mar-ket Street to Justin Herman Plaza.
