Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Student Profiles
AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID recruits students who WANT to go to college and who have the APTITUDE to do so, but who may not yet have acquired the skills they need. This program offers encouragement, tutoring, enrichment and an extension of experiences that will help students prepare for success in a four- year college. This program includes the students’ inclusion in advanced courses such as: Pre-AP, Advanced Placement, Honors and/or any other course that is defined as RIGOROUS by the Tyler ISD Program of Studies manual.
Please note the criteria used to select AVID student candidates. Potential AVID students should possess some of the following characteristics:
Average to high test scores
Good Conduct
Average GPA (“B” and “C” grades)
College potential with support
First in family to attend college
Special circumstances that require additional support
Parent and student have desire and determination
Positive attitude toward learning, grades, and school
Potential for growth as a student
Consistently puts forth effort in doing work

What is AVID and why is it important?
AVID is a comprehensive college readiness system dedicated to helping students achieve their goals of going to college. Students considered for AVID are bright students who are placed in high-rigor courses such as Pre- Advanced Placement, Advanced Placement and Dual Credit courses and are supported in the AVID elective class.
The AVID elective class, held within the regular school day, provides academic monitoring and tutoring. The writing process, Socratic questioning, collaborative learning, and reading are the core strategies of the program.
The AVID elective class addresses key elements in college preparation: academic survival skills, college entry skills, tutorials, motivational activities and career and college exploration.
What is required of an AVID Student?
Each AVID student carries a binder in which he or she is required to keep materials from all academic classes.
Students keep track of assignments on assignment sheets or agendas and are required to take Cornell notes DAILY in their academic classes. Student binders are graded weekly for content and organization. Led by tutors,
students participate in tutorial groups in the AVID classroom. In addition, students are taught study skills, test preparation, time management and the writing process. Teachers fill out periodic progress reports in addition to routine school ones, for monitoring by the AVID teacher/coordinator. Potential AVID students must have one or more teacher recommendation (s) and is expected to have passed ALL classes and state assessment tests each year.
The AVID elective is NOT a remediation program, classroom intervention or for students who have persistent behavioral issues; AVID students are expected to have minimal or no behavior problems. *Failure to follow these guidelines may result in dismissal from the program. Students who apply and are chosen for AVID have desire and determination to enter into a 4-year college/university. AVID is focused on helping students who have potential and the ability to succeed in college.
What Can Parents do to Support AVID Students?
Communication between the AVID teacher and the parents is essential. The AVID elective teacher or coordinator will contact you to share your student’s progress, and appreciate any information you share with them. At home, parents can see to it that students are doing their homework in a quiet place with few interruptions. By asking your student about his/her day and inquiries about homework and the events of school, you will bridge what could be a great gap between his/her school life and home life. Encourage your student to be persistent in their education, even if they say “it’s too hard.” With home and school connected, successes increase. In addition, stressing your belief that your student can succeed in middle school, high school and attend college will also motivate him/her to work harder and achieve more. Throughout the year, there will be Parent/Family Workshops that will address topics of concern relating to student success in middle school, high school and college
applications and admission.
