Website: Ascension107.org Facebook or Instagram: Ascension107 Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

On behalf of Fr. Rafferty, Fr. Daniel, and Msgr. Shelley, I wish you a very happy and healthy 2019. The Christmas story is one of peace, hope and continued relevance. For some who are marginalized, that can be a difficult message to hear. Hopefully our prayers during these days of Christmas will in some small way uplift those who are alone or sad during these days of Christmas.

I wish to thank those who worked so very hard in making these Christmas celebrations so beautiful. A special word of thanks to Mery Madera and all those who decorated the church. The church is always beautifully decorated for all the different seasons - but in particular, during the Christmas and Easter Seasons. I also wish to thank all of the liturgical ministers – the altar servers, the lectors and the Eucharistic Ministers. I would like to single out once again Michael Elmore who really is the one who makes sure that all our celebrations are done seamlessly, every Sunday, but most particularly during our special high holy days. Of course, one of the things that makes the liturgies at Ascension so beautiful and memorable is the music. Thanks to the Walkirios for their music on Christmas Day at the 12:30 Mass. I would like to extend a special word of thanks to Preston Smith, the director of music. Each of the Masses were beautiful, but distinct one from another. The Choir sang beautifully at the Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day at 11:00a.m. -- beautifully done and very uplifting! In addition, this year we were blessed by having a string quartet and oboe, as well as a violin and trumpet. We certainly must have one of the finest music programs in all of New York. Thank you Preston et al. . . So many have done so much during this past year! Thank you one and all. On Tuesday, we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary: Mother of God. I invite you to join us on Tuesday for Mass in English at 11, and Mass in Spanish at 12:30. On Monday evening, there will just be one vigil Mass celebrated at 5:00p.m. in English.

I wish you God’s choicest blessings for the remainder of the Christmas Season and I wish you much health and happiness as we begin a New Year together.

Peace,, Fr. Kearney

Paz,

SAFETY AND SECURITY

For the next few weeks, the main front doors of the church will be closed until 11:30 AM. The doors will be closed again after the noon Mass and re-open at 6:00 PM. This is in an attempt to curb illicit behavior in the church throughout the day, including drink-ing and theft of our poor boxes. We need to maintain a safe envi-ronment for the safety of all parishioners. The church will remain open however to anyone who wishes to pray in the church from 10:00 AM and throughout the afternoon. We simply ask that all parishioners enter and exit the church through the front of the rectory when the main front doors of the church are closed. Thank you for your understanding.

SEGURIDAD Y PROTECCION

Homeless Shelter News

The men’s shelter volunteers provide meals, a safe place to sleep, and friendship to our guests on Saturday and Sunday nights. It is a small way we can restore dig-nity and respect into the lives of men who are chal-lenged with homelessness. In November we sheltered 109 guests over 8 nights. We had new volunteers join this month and dedicated returning volunteers from 5-80+ years. To date, we have collected over 350 pairs of socks and over 200 have been distributed. We will con-tinue to give out socks through the winter months. During the month of December we are collecting new men’s hats, gloves and scarves to give to our guests. Drop off your donations in the rectory or have your gifts mailed to: Ascension Shelter, 221 W 107 St, NY, NY 10025. New volunteers are always welcome.
