Merry Christmas and Blessings to all our parishioners and visitors of St. Pius Church:
I pray that this Christmas Season, which extends to the Baptism of the Lord, Jan. 8, is filled with many blessings to all of you in the form of peace, joy and hope, especially in these challenging times. May the peace of God, who is Jesus, be with you and your loved ones now and throughout the New Year of 2018.
I am grateful and appreciative to all of you who have prayed for my healing throughout these past several months of challenges to my health and for the cards and notes you have sent me. For you to know - After experiencing severe fatigue over the past several months, since the ending of summer, as well as suffering from the atrial fibrillation I have had for over 10 years and experiencing sleep apnea for several years, I suffered a stroke while celebrating daily 8:00 am Mass on Wed. Sept. 27. After spending 4 days at Sequoia Hospital, I returned to the rectory and began recuperating while working with my cardiologist to see the best way to handle my stroke, most likely caused from the atrial-fibrillation. After taking some speech therapy to counteract some of the effects of the stroke and having started taking a blood thinner, I took steps to protect myself from further strokes and deal with both my heart and sleeping disorders. Thus, Mon. Dec. 4, I went to Sequoia Hospital where I had an atrial ablation to address my atrial-fibrillation and recently, through Sequoia Hospital Sleep Center, have begun improving my sleep by addressing the sleep apnea with a breathing device. I have been
recuperating for the past couple weeks, post ablation, trying to regain my energy and stamina. I am slowly feeling better, while not returning to the hectic schedule I am used to following. After the New Year I am hoping to get back into a more regular routine here and at St. Matthias. I simply need to care for my health by not returning to unhealthy life and work patterns, as in ignoring the need for proper and sufficient sleep, rest and relaxation and being caught up with anxiety and stress. Again, I thank all of you for your concern and understanding as seen in your prayerful support of me over these past months; I am very grateful to you all! As you may know, Fr. Tom Martin will be returning to us Jan. 1, as he is completing his temporary role as
administrator of St. Veronica's. With the Archbishop's suggestion and appointment, I am grateful that Fr. Tom will be helping me as Pastor by acting as temporary administrator of St. Pius and St. Matthias. His skilled presence will be welcomed by me and our staff as we go forth into 2018, always with the intent of how best we can serve our communities.
I also want to thank Fr. Nick Paloso for serving our two parishes while Fr. Tom was away and wish Fr. Nick many blessings as he heads toward his ministry with St. Timothy's, San Mateo. God bless you, Fr. Nick.
Gratitude as well to all who have brought clergy and staff many food gifts and other items, for which we all are most grateful. Thanks greatly to Brian Tupper and our Men’s Club for their wonderful service again working the Tree Lot - good support to our parish--Thank you.
Merry Christmas to all and blessings for a peaceful and healthy New Year in 2018.

SAINT OF THE WEEK / SANTO DE LA SEMANA
Saint Egwin
Died circa 720
You say you’re not familiar with today’s saint? Chances are you aren’t unless you’re especially informed about Benedictine bishops who established monasteries in medieval England.
Born in the seventh century of royal blood, Egwin entered a monastery, and was enthusiastically received by royalty, clergy, and the people as the bishop of Worcester, England. As a bishop he was known as a protector of orphans and the widowed and a fair judge. Who could argue with that?
His popularity didn’t hold up among members of the clergy, however. They saw him as overly strict, while he felt he was simply trying to correct abuses and impose appropriate disciplines. Bitter resentments arose, and Egwin made his way to Rome to present his case to Pope Constantine. The case against Egwin was examined and annulled.
Upon his return to England, Egwin founded Evesham Abbey, which became one of the great Benedictine houses of medieval England. It was dedicated to Mary, who had reportedly made it known to Egwin just where a church should be built in her honor.
Egwin died at the abbey on December 30, 717. Following his burial many miracles were attributed to him: The blind could see, the deaf could hear, the sick were healed.
Correcting abuses and faults is never an easy job, not even for a bishop. Egwin attempted to correct and build up the clergy in his diocese and it earned him the wrath of his priests. When we are called to correct someone or some group, plan on opposition, but also know that it might be the right thing to do.
St. Pius Church Parish Goals
In the fall of 2015, we began our Parish Planning Process and under the leadership of Fr. Rossi with a group of 20 parishioners and staff representing the parish-at-large, our futuring team created a five year plan with goals. The goals are:
I. St. Pius Church will celebrate our faith in prayer and worship. Acts 2:42-44 II. St. Pius Church will ignite our faith and nurture our spirits. Matthew 28:18-20
III. St. Pius Church will continue building a welcoming and unified community. 1 Corinthians 12:12-13 IV. St. Pius Church will show compassion and mercy through service to those in need. Matthew 25:34-37 V. St. Pius Church will nurture a vibrant and diverse young church. 1 Timothy 4:12
VI. St. Pius Church will integrate and consistently practice the spirituality of stewardship. Matthew 6:21 VII. St. Pius Church will have well-trained parish staff and leadership to support its changing needs.
Matthew 20:16
We have met some of these goals and are working on meeting others.
Our parish relies on parishioner input and assistance to accomplish these goals, if you are interested in helping with our parish plan, please call the Parish Center at (650)361-1411 or email saint@pius.org.

St. Vincent de Paul 2nd Collection Next Weekend December 30/31
Next Sunday is the fifth Sunday collection for the St. Pius Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Through your generous support, we have been able to provide assistance to many marginalized and forgotten individuals and families in our Parish community in the form of food, emergency shelter and utility payments. Because of your continued generosity, we have also been able to provide each family with a gift card for either Safeway, Target or Mi Rancho, to help with the purchase of fresh milk, produce and other perishable items.
The past several months have seen a dramatic increase in the number of families requesting assistance with rent. While we have been able to assist these families, these efforts have taken a toll on our available funds. We sincerely thank you for your past generosity and again respectfully ask for your help, so that we may
continue to assist families in their time of need. Thank you for your continued generosity and support.

Perfectly Yourself by Matthew Kelly
Do you ever get the feeling that you are not enough? Not smart enough, not beautiful enough, not loved enough, not rich enough, not good enough . . . We all have these feelings from time to time, usually because we’re comparing ourselves to others. But God doesn’t compare you to anybody else. He wants to help you become the person he created you to be - perfectly
yourself!
In this life-changing book, Matthew Kelly addresses the opportunities and obstacles we encounter when we decide to ask life’s BIG questions: Who am I? and why am I here? Newly revised with an emphasis on
spiritual growth and realizing God’s dream for your life, Perfectly Yourself is a book for anyone who has
survived the collapse of a relationship, wondered if he or she would ever find a fulfilling career, or failed at a diet. Kelly teaches us how to find the balance between accepting ourselves and striving to become all God dreams for us to become. This is the guide you need if you long to be at peace with who you are, where you are, and what you are doing, not in some distant tomorrow, but here and now - today.
The books are available in the Church this weekend, please take a copy for your family as our gift to you…...
