Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

It’s hard to believe that we are now half-way through the Season of Lent. Today in the church we celebrate Laetare Sunday. Laetare Sunday is the popular name for the Fourth Sunday of Lent. In Latin, Laetare means "Rejoice!" Laetare Sunday has traditionally been viewed as a day of celebration, on which the austerity of Lent is briefly lessened. Laetare Sunday is also known as Rose Sunday when purple vestments are exchanged for rose ones. The point of today is to provide us encouragement as we progress toward the end of this penitential season. The Season of Lent is meant to be a time to draw us closer to the Lord. The church invites us to do so through the disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Specifically, Lent is meant to be a time of heightened prayer, penance and preparation so that we may worthily celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.

The Gospel mandate to “welcome the stranger” requires Catholics to care for and stand with newcomers, authorized and unauthorized, including unaccompanied immigrant children, refugees and asylum-seekers, those unnecessarily detained, and victims of human trafficking. Comprehensive immigration reform is desperately needed to fix a broken immigration system and should include a broad and fair legalization program with a path to citizenship. This would hopefully include some kind of a work program with worker protections and just wages, family reunification policies and, most especially, refuge for those fleeing persecution and violence. The right and responsibility of nations to control their borders and to maintain the rule of law should be recognized but pursued in a just and humane manner. Many of you have personally expressed to me a desire to help someone from our community in a tangible way. While that is not always possible, we should never underestimate the power of prayer. To that end, we are going to have 24 hours of prayer – praying for our immigration/refugee brothers and sisters. Every Friday we have all day adoration. On Friday, March 31st, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed at the regular time, 6:30a.m. After the 7:00p.m. evening Mass, the Sacrament will again be exposed and the church will remain open all night. The 24-hour adoration will conclude with benediction of the Blessed Sacrament on Saturday morning, April 1st at 7:00a.m. Some group leaders have made a list to be sure that all hours of the night are covered. All are invited to come and spend some quiet time with the Lord. Again, during this 24-hour period, as an Ascension Community we will pray in a special way for the marginalized and the most vulnerable amongst us, particularly our immigrant brothers and sisters. Pope Francis said, “In (our) visits and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, we experience the closeness of the good Shepherd, the tenderness of His love, the presence of a faithful friend. We ... all experience this large support in our lives provided by faith and our personal and intimate dialogue with the Lord in the Eucharist." Remember the words of Alfred Lord Tennyson, “More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.”

Peace, Fr. Kearney

Paz,

The Ascension Church Youth Group ("Spirit Squad"), and Ascension Adults in Action (AAA) group are sponsoring a Lenten Mercy project to help homeless people still on our city streets. During Lent, we will be collecting donations of Metrocards which have a round-trip ride minimum ($5.50) or

cash that we will use to buy round trip rides on "empty" Metro cards. The AAA and Spirit Squad will take the round trip Metro Cards and combine them with information/ business cards from Camba, the homeless drop off shelter we work with in hosting the homeless on Saturday nights. We will distribute the cards to homeless people on the streets and subways, in hopes that they will travel to the Camba Center to find the help they need. Thank you for your support!
