The importance of Mining in Peru

The Peruvian Mining Institute IIMP, an independent organization gathering all professionals of the mining industry, presents itself at this special event to explain to you the importance of the mining industry in Peru and its contribution to the economic and social development.
We will show you objectively, which is the impact of the Peruvian mining industry to the national economy and its permanent role as fighter against the poverty of marginal rural areas, by its activities promoting the decentralized development.
As we can see in the following statistics, the Peruvian macro economy is favored by the development and mining exports which has generated a surplus in the commercial balance the previous years, in spite of the international financial crisis.
The mining companies contribute about 40% of the whole tax collection in Peru.
50% of those taxes are transferred as “Canon Minero”, to the regional governments where mining companies are operating.
From the total tax collection by exploitation of the natural resources, the mining industry contributes 73.7 %, oil, 12%, gas 10%, hydro energy, 2.2%, fishing industry, 1.1% and wood 0.1%.
In January 2010 the direct mining employment has reached 140,000 which generates 560,000 (1 : 4) indirect mining employment. As the statistics show, the direct and indirect employment have 4 dependents that indicates that the mining industry benefits about 2.8 million persons, that means 10% of the Peruvian population.
In contrary to the opinions that the mining industry damages the environment, we will see in the statistics that the activity in the national areas is only 0.6%, 0.33% in exploration and protected areas like the nature reserve, special projects and other ones occupy 46.64%.
The investment increased yearly; US$1.086 Billion in 2005;
US$1.610 in 2006; US$1.249 in 2007; US$1.708 in 2008 and US$2.771 in 2009, so we have a calculated budget of 37 Billion US$ for the next 6 years.
We emphasize that in the last 10 years the activities in mining, focused to increase the development of the population around the mines with important investments. In the following pictures I will show you schematically and quantitatively what Peruvian mining is about.
