I am on vacation in Buffalo for a couple weeks, but before I left, I prepared the newsletters. Speaking of Buffalo, anyone from there knows the story of Father Nelson Baker, a

diocesan priest who was a true apostle to the poor, especially orphans and the sick. (Ask Fr. Bill.) America Magazine (a Jesuit publication) recently ran a story about Fr. Baker whose cause for canonization by

the Church is well underway. (https://

www.americamagazine.org/ July 29 issue)

He has already been declared Servant of God. That means that his life of outstanding virtue is recognized and held up for

imitation. He still needs the miracles through his intercession. I hope you find inspiration in the lessons that the author says that we can each learn from the life of Venerable Nelson

Baker. For more information, go to https://

www.olvbasilica.org/the-father-baker-story

A special welcome to Fr. Roy Quiogue, CICM who will preach at all the Masses this weekend. He will give us the opportunity to contribute to the work of the CICM

missionaries throughout the world. Please be generous.

In one Heart,

A WORD FROM THE PASTOR Gently Used Shoes and Belts for La Posada

de Guadalupe

As another way to support those in our community who are in need, the Knights of Columbus will be hosting a gently used men's shoes and belts drive. All varieties and sizes are needed. Dress shoes, athletic shoes and work boots will be graciously accepted. This is also true for belts. The drive will take the weekend of August 28-29 at all Masses. You should be able drop the donations into designated boxes.

Feast of Saint John Eudes

August 19 is the Solemnity of St. John Eudes. The Eudist Fathers invite you to join us for a special Mass to honor our

founder. It will take places at. James Parish, Solana Beach at 10:00 am on August 19. Spiritual sharing and tacos will follow the Mass.

Of course, we will have our regular Masses at St. Patrick’s at 7:00 am and 8:00 am on that day in honor of St. John Eudes. Please celebrate with us at any of these Masses.

Hermanas y Hermanos:

Isabel sabe a quién lleva María

Somos

Solemnity of the Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Reflect: The word Assump on comes from the La n verb assumere, meaning "to take to oneself." Our Lord, Jesus Christ took Mary home to himself where she is experiencing the blessedness of heaven. From very early on it has been part of the teaching of the Church that Mary was not made to wait but was taken up and is in heaven with both her body and her soul.

In 1950 Pope Pius XII formally defined as Catholic dogma that every part of Mary was precious to God. Mary’s en re person had been recovered for heaven. Back then, the world s ll struggled up from the ashes and ruins of World War II with more than 80 million lives lost and wasted, with human bodies cheaply treated. With the Feast of the Assump on, we celebrate Mary and that to the One who created us, flesh and blood is not waste, but each person is a sacred vessel.

Pray: The Assump on of Mary is the fourth glorious mystery of the rosary. Pray one decade of the Glorious Rosary (One Our Father, 10 Hail Marys, One Glory Be).

Outreach: we are collec ng school supplies (notebooks, pencils, pens, back bags) for the Casa de los Pobres, to support the sisters and their educa on programs. There is also a great need for children’s socks and shoes and family jars of peanut bu er. Dona ons (marked Casa) may be dropped off at the parish office. Thank you for your generosity! High School Registration for Confirmation is

ongoing. Families interested in enrolling their son or daughter in Confirmation may go to the parish website www.stpatrickcarlsbad.com and find all the necessary information regarding Confirmation and how to start the registration process. We are currently in the middle tier of our registration process but that tier will be coming to an end on Friday, Sept. 3. After that, registration fees will increase. We really want to encourage families to register their young people as soon as possible.

The youth ministry office will be closed August 16-20, 2021 so that our team can recharge their batteries prior to the start of the new school year. Any email or voicemail messages that come in during that week will be returned the following week. We thank you for understanding.

Last weekend, St. Pat’s youth ministry hosted an evening of praise and worship for youth leaders from St. Pat’s, St. Thomas Moore, & Mission San Luis Rey parishes. The evening was preceded by a bbq hosted by

the Knights of Columbus from St. Pat’s. Around 70 youth and adults participated in the evening. St. Pat’s Youth Ministry would like to thank the Knights of Columbus, especially Steve Rodriguez &

Mark Zecca for all of their help in hosting a wonderful night. They did a great job and our youth ministry is extremely grateful. The youth ministry team would also

like to thank Nick, Jen, & Chris Rivette, Gerardo Candanoza, & Mauricio Minotta for their help with the

Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

First Reading

Revelation 11:19a; 12:1-6a,10ab

The sign of God's salvation will be a woman clothed with the sun.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 45:10-12,16

The queen takes her place next to God.

Second Reading

1 Corinthians 15:20-27

Christ has redeemed Adam's sin.

Gospel Reading

Luke 1:39-56

Mary greets Elizabeth and sings God's praise.

Background on the Gospel Reading

The assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven has long been held as an important Catholic belief. The belief was not defined as dogma, however, until 1950 by Pope Pius XII. The dogma teaches that Mary, who was without sin, was taken, body and soul, into the glory of heaven.

The Gospel for this holy day recalls Mary's actions after the announcement of Jesus' birth by the Angel Gabriel. Mary goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth who is also with child. Elizabeth greets Mary with full recognition of the roles they and their unborn children will play in God's plan for salvation. Mary responds to Elizabeth's greeting with her song of praise, the Magnificat. Both women recall and echo God's history of showing favor upon the people of Israel. Mary's Magnificat, in particular, echoes the song of praise offered by Hannah, the mother of Samuel.

The Gospel for this day reminds us that Mary's Assumption into heaven is best understood with regard for the full spectrum of Catholic beliefs about the person of Christ and the person of Mary. Only Mary, who was born without stain of original sin—the Immaculate Conception—could give birth to Christ, who is fully God and fully human. This is called the Immaculate Conception. Because of Mary's role in God's plan of salvation, she does not suffer from the effects of sin, which are death and decay. Mary is the first to receive the fullness of the redemption that her son has won for all of humanity. The Church, therefore, recognizes Mary as the sign of the salvation promised to all.

Today's Gospel highlights Mary's faith. Mary's faith enabled her to recognize the work of God in her people's history and in her own life. Her openness to God allowed God to work through her so that salvation might come to all. Mary is a model and symbol of the Church. May we be like Mary, open and cooperative in God's plan of salvation.
