Lenten Regulations

During the season of Lent, the Church urges all the faithful to reflect a spirit of penance in their daily life through performing acts of fast and abstinence.

“Fasting” requires that only one full meal be taken per

day. Two other smaller meals are to be taken during the day to maintain physical strength, but these two meals together should not equal a full meal in quantity. Fasting obliges all those who have reached the age of 18 and continues to oblige until age 59. Those not spe-cifically obliged to fast are encouraged to join in the discipline of fasting to the extent that they are able.

“Abstinence” prohibits individuals from eating meat

on a particular day. Abstinence obliges all those who have reached the age of 14 and continues to oblige throughout their entire life. Those not specifically obliged to abstain from eating meat are encouraged to join in this discipline to the extent that they are able.

ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY ar e days

of fast and abstinence. FRIDAYS in Lent are days of

abstinence.

Stations of the Cross Stations of the Cross will be prayed:

Fridays at 6 p.m. at St. Peter Church (English)

Fridays at 7 p.m. at Assumption Church (Spanish)

STRENGTH AGAINST TEMPTATION The first Sunday of the season of Lent always in-cludes a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of the first read-ing from Genesis, which recounts the very first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a gar-den of delight. The Gospel story is set in the de-sert. As believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our atten-tion is drawn to that temptaatten-tion within each of us to become like God--we want control, power, and answers to all of life's difficult questions. As com-munities of faith, we are given this season of re-pentance so that we can join our hearts with others on the difficult journey of conversion. We look to God and to one another for strength against temp-tation.

Pantry Update!

Our Parish Pantry is in the process of relocating from the basement of 145 Clinton Avenue to the basement of the rectory at 53 St. Mark’s Place. Beginning in March, the pantry could be operation-al again but nothing can happen without support. If you are looking for a Lenten project, are retired, feel called or need to fill a void in your life, please consider offering an hour or two each week. We need helping hands to shop, sort, shelve, pack and personally distribute the food to those who partici-pate. If you have computer skills, we can put them to good use, too! If you are able to pitch in, please see Margaret Moschetto or call the rectory and leave a message for her. Many, many thanks!! The sympathy of the parish is extended to the families of Msgr. Thomas Gelsomino, Thomas Kelly, and Tamrick J. Chesser.
