MISSION AUC is a premier English-language institution of higher learning. INSTITUTIONAL ACCREDITATION AND AFFILIATIONS The American University in Cairo was founded in 1919 by Americans devoted to education and service in the Middle East. AUC is licensed to grant degrees and is incorporated in the State of Delaware in the United States. AUC is an independent, not-for-profit, equal-opportunity institution. AUC is accredited in the United States by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. On April 28, 2011, AUC became the first university in Egypt to be accredited by the National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education, an Egyptian government body formed in 2007 with the purpose of establishing quality standards for Egypt’s educational institutions. Many of AUC’s programs have received specialized accreditation. AUC is governed by a Board of Trustees and is administered by a chief executive officer appointed by this board. Atef Eltoukhy is the current chair of the AUC Board of Trustees and Francis J. Ricciardone is the University president.
