Course specification

2. Course aim

 Prepares the student to provide comprehensive dental care to his pediatric patients

 Provides the student with experience in proper management, behavior modification and the ability to establish a positive attitude towards dental treatment in his young patients

 Teaches students to recognize situation that require consultation with or referral to other health care professionals

 Helps student to recognize predisposing and etiological factors for dental diseases that require intervention to promote oral health

3. Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) a- Knowledge and Understanding:

By the end of the program, the student should be able to:

a1. Identify principles of pathogenic mechanism and manifestation of child diseases which are of dental significance.

a2. Select the most suitable technique for management of children in dental practice

a3. Identify the principles of restorative dentistry for children

a4. Describe the basis of endodontic practice management in children.

a5. Memorize differences between children and adult that modify oral surgical practice for children.

a6. Recognize space maintenance problems in children and basis for management.

By the end of the program, the student should be able to:

b1. Perform clinical examination and formulate effective treatment planning.

b2. Perform a range of clinical procedures which are within the scope of general dentistry.

b3. Apply different local anesthetic techniques for children.

b4. Perform extraction of teeth and removal of roots when necessary.

b5.Perform of non-surgical periodontal treatment and monitor treatment b6. Prepare cavities and restore suitable restorative materials

b7. Perform different techniques of pulp therapy b7. Apply principles of space management.

b8.Manage traumatic dental injuries in children b9.Apply current infection control guidelines.

b10. Control different levels of patient's anxiety and apprehension in different age group.

C1.Integrate patient history, clinical examination and other investigation for patient diagnosis and treatment planning.

C2.Differentiate between normal and abnormal features that is particularly relevant to pediatric dental practice.

C3.Solve clinical problems related to dental practice by intellectual rigour and analytical thinking.

C4. Select the most appropriate treatment for a particular case.

C5. Predict developing abnormalities and weigh intervention against referral.
