2- Aims After completion of this course, the student should have information about qualitative and quantitative analysis of raw materials, natural products and herbal medicines, in addition to chromatographic techniques and its application in isolation of active principles.
3- Overall aims of Course:
A- Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
a1- Identify clearly how the spectral analyses used in determination of the structures of natural products.
a2- Identify the modern techniques of chromatography used in separation of plant constituents and their quality control.
a3- Recognize how to investigate chemical constituents in medicinal plants by modern techniques.
a4- Recognize obviously quality control, evaluation of crude drugs and their pharmacopoeial constants.
a5- Recall the proper drying and storage conditions of medicinal plants to keep their maximum effectiveness.
B- Intellectual Skills: By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
b1- Apply deeply the scientific thinking and use the studied information properly in the applied fields.
b2- Inspect and solve properly the scientific problems in the field of herbal drugs.
b3-Solve problems concerning qualitative and quantitative determination of active constituents in medicinal plants and in herbal preparations.
b4- Compare appropriately between correct and wrong data of natural active constituents reported in different websites.
C- Professional and Practical Skills:
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
c1- Apply different chromatographic methods for isolation of plant constituents.

c2- Use efficiently microscopical, chromatographic and spectral techniques to detect adulteration of raw plants.
c3- Carry out quality control tests of herbs using UV
spectrophotometers and various chromatographic techniques.
D- General and transferable skills:
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
d1- Update effectively his/her knowledge concerning herbal formulations and their quality control.
d2- Plan and manage successfully a scientific project.
d3- Lead and work creatively in a team or independently.
d4- Search continuously for new techniques for analysis and isolation of herbal active constituents
