I would set the project projection to Wgs84 utm zone - whatever your zone is - to make sure your scale will be correct. Set the scale in the map composer window under map item, properties, scale.

Thanks but it's set at wgs84 and I don't know how to change it to a meter scale. Is there a formula for the conversion.

Go via the file > project properties > coordinate reference system and search for wgs84 utm (and what ever your utm zone is).

Changed to wgs84 30n for southern England. In item properties I can change the scale and set it to 2000. Changed scale bar to numeric which now reads 1:2,000. is it 1cm or 1inch that represents 200m or is it 2,000m? Thanks

The units will be in metres.

1cm equals 2000 cm at 1:2000
