Voice is a biometric source of information: it stores particular speaker’s information that allows us to differentiate their voice among others. Speaker gender and age are part of that information which, besides, is inherent to the voice. The auditory human system is able to capture those features from the frequencies of the acoustic wave and send them to the brain where they are interpreted. The voice can be classified into groups of similar voices. The voice will be classified as female or male voice (based on gender groups), or as childish, adult or aged voice (based on age groups). So, which features does the brain select to classify the voice? Would it be possible to isolate those features and use them in ASR systems? If those features could be isolated and used before the speaker identification/verification, the error probabilities owing to the population number would be reduced since the comparison of one individual would be limited to a group instead of the whole database.

The proposed system identifies the most distinctive parts of an object category based on their visual appearance to facilitate and improve the performance of higher level tasks, such as object detection and recognition. More specifically, the system identifies key regions of human hands, although any other object category can be analyzed. The proposed key-part identification system, for now on KPIS, can be decomposed into two modules, as shown in Figure 8. The first module, clustering-based estimation of object key parts, performs a multi-scale clustering processing of the image regions (hand image regions) of the input image database (see Figure 9). As a result, several candidate partitions of objet parts are obtained per scale (see Figure 10). The second module, subjective-based selection of object key parts, filters and refines the obtained object- part partitions in the previous module to select those partitions, and clusters inside a partition, that best represent the different parts of an object at different scales.

A FUZZY DNA-based Algorithm for identification and authentication in an Iris Detection System

Abstract —Several algorithms have been proposed in order to identify or authenticate a certain user in an Iris Detection System. These previous algorithms are based on different transforms applied to a certain features extracted from the Iris, known as Iris template. However, this new approach aims to identify and/or authenticate a user avoiding transforms, comparing directly the Iris templates instead. Based on ideas inherited from DNA alignment algorithms and fuzzy logic, this new algorithm attains a better result in deciding whether two templates belong to the same user, when being compared to previous algorithms. Furthermore, this new algorithm allows a partial comparison between the whole template stored in a database, and a portion of template, decreasing the accessing time. As a result, not only False Acceptance Rate (FAR) and False Rejection Rate (FRR) but also time in iden- tifying and authenticating are highly decreased compared to current algorithms and furthermore its flexibility in a local comparison makes of it a promising algorithm in not only an Iris Detection System, but in any Biometric System.

In this article we have presented SECUR, an RFID-based off-site data storage management system that significantly improves the security of the backup data life cycle. This improvement is due not only to the inherent advantages of RFID over bar code scanners, but also to the deployment of thorough security controls at different points in the processes involved, including state-of–the-art cryptographic mechanisms, the segregation of duties, two- and three-factor authentications and real-time monitoring of custody units. The SECUR system has been successfully implemented and put into production [16], providing added value to customers due to improved security and efficiency. The experimental results presented in this article show the quantifiable part of this improvement as a reduction in the elapsed time and failure rate for custody unit operations.

Using the EM algorithm to estimate the state space model for OMAX

This paper presents a time-domain stochastic system identification method based on Maximum Likelihood Estimation and the Expectation Maximization algorithm that is applied to the estimation of modal parameters from system input and output data. The effectiveness of this structural identification method is evaluated through numerical simulation. Modal parameters (eigenfrequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes) of the simulated structure are estimated applying the proposed identification method to a set of 100 simulated cases. The numerical results show that the proposed method estimates the modal parameters with precision in the presence of 20% measurement noise even. Finally, advantages and disadvantages of the method have been discussed.

Implementation of bio-inspired optimization algorithms in the System Identification of a FAR 23 aircraft

ABSTRACT. Aircraft aerodynamic forces and moments can be expressed as a func- tion of the dynamic pressure, aircraft dimensions and flight conditions. They are very important do predict the aircraft behavior and performance. Moreover, they play an important role predicting the model response to control inputs. For these reasons it is important to accurate determine the aerodynamic characteristics in terms of stability and control derivatives. This study presents a methodology to precisely estimate stability and control derivatives through system identification procedure. Navion FAR 23 airplane model was used for this purpose. A bio-inspired optimization method was used to create optimal input control signals to excite the model and obtain an output signal with good frequency content that allowed to properly identify the system. Inclusion of bio-inspired methods increased the accu- racy of the estimates. The method can be used to identify fixed wing platforms of similar characteristics. Results can be used to develop flight simulators to collect system information regarding certification evidences and to train pilots.

The voice identification / authentication mechanism is motivated by HCI considerations. The intention is to implement an intuitive interface in order for human agents to accurately control / override multiple automated non-human agents (i.e., KEWAZO system modules) within a field of operations if and when necessary. Privileges over degrees of control / override are individually assigned to present human agents, who may play supervisorial or supporting roles within the operations. As detailed before, KEWAZO’s modules and the presently developed gripper are automated systems, yet there may be occasions when they must be commanded to stop, retreat, approach, grip, release, etc., by humans in order to avoid potential accidents and/or to pause operations for inspections, etc. This voice identification / authentication mechanism decentralizes override control and deploys it throughout the entire field of operations—that is to say, the systems may be engaged whenever and wherever users with appropriate privileges are heard.

The antibiosis phenotype in Luria Bertani (LB) assay versus the sensitive strain Acinetobacter sp. UAPS0169 was evaluated in approximately 6000 mutants of the strain B. gladioli UAPS07070. The mutants produced with the random insertion transposon Himar1. Thirteen mutants exhibit less antagonism ability in comparison with the wild type strain. The antagonistic phenotype was less evident when the defective clones were grown in minimal medium with specific carbon sources (glucose, glycerol, succinic acid, sodium acetate, sodium gluconate and fructose) than with LB. The interrupted gene was sequenced and identified in six mutants. The knocked genes are related to the Quorum Sensing system (QS) (BG87 and BG1232), to the regulator transcriptional type LsyR (BG79), to a glutamate dehydrogenase (BG339), to a NAD(P)H flavin oxidoreductase (BG41) and to a fucose-binding lectin protein (BG12). The toxoflavin production, swarming and plant pathogenicity was evaluated in QS and LysR mutants. The toxoflavin, involved in virulence and antimicrobial properties, biosynthesis was shown in solid medium LB by B. gladioli UASP07070. The QS and LysR mutants did not show detectable toxoflavin production. BG87, BG1232 and BG79 did not show toxA, toxoflavin biosynthesis, transcription by RT-PCR end point assay. Toxoflavin plays an important role in the antibiosis phenotype of our model. In B. gladioli UAPS07070 the toxoflavin production is QS-dependent and putatively also LysR-dependent under our experimental conditions. UAPS07070 exhibits swarming motility at 30 o C but not

Soft-sediment deformation structures induced by seismic activity in the San Pedro el Alto area, Acambay graben, Mexico

located on the SE flank of the TV; its age is 1.2 ± 0.13 Ma obtained by fission track dating (Mercer et al., 2002). The Pliocene-Quaternary TV belongs to an extensive system; climatic and environmental factors have contributed to its morphological evolution, mainly controlled by tectonic-earthquake activity, which dominates over surface erosion and sedimentation processes, allowing the preservation of coseismic deformation structures (Michetti and Hancock, 1997; Michetti et al., 2005; 2012). From 1593 to 1856, the caldera of the TV formed a natural lake; later, the San Pedro el Alto dam was built. The lacustrine depos- its in the center of this basin consist of interbedded strata of ash and lapilli, and a few beds of coarser volcanic sediments. This material is in turn covered with lacustrine sediments composed of clays and silts, and locally with diatomite mixture. These deposits are often covered by fine volcanic ash that now is soil; according to structures observed, part of the sediments formed there could have recorded the secondary effects of seismic events and the faulting of the area.

The 87.50% of the E. coli isolated were correctly identi- fied in six hours using the DETID-Ec diagnostic kit, with a great specificity, being valuable for this purpose. In addi- tion identification of E. coli by means of β -glucuronidase and tryptophanase activities detection represents a promis- ing and economical option. Since rapid results in E. coli identification depend on microbial concentration, positive specimens having contaminants at low concentration can be detected through DETID-Ec.
