Why are there so many orchid species?

Why are there so many orchid species?

To provide an idea of the extent of the devastation caused by geological activity a few examples can suffice. In 1987 an earthquake of a 7.2 magnitude on the Richter scale struck north-central Ecuador with the epicenter near Volcán Reventador, about 40 miles northeast of Quito in a direct line. Damage to buildings in Quito was extensive but not catastroph- ic. On the face of Volcán Reventador a landslide occurred that was 40,000 hectares in area. The slide caused a temporary dam on the Rio Napo that broke after a couple of days. The ensuing wall of water that came down the Rio Napo devastated indigenous communities all the way to the Amazon River and the death toll was incalculable. The bald area is now recovering. Eighty thousand years ago the Volcán Chalupas exploded leaving a crater 40 km in diame- ter and a baby volcano appeared in the crater that we now call Volcán Cotopaxi. The explosion covered with ash what we now know as 5 provinces of cen- tral Ecuador to a depth of 30 m. The Volcán Tungurahua, which now has 12 species of Telipogon occurring on its slopes, is only 3,000 years old. An eruption of Volcán Pululagua 3,500 years ago left the province of Pichincha covered in 1.5 m of ash. Volcán Pululahua is about 20 km northwest of Quito.

Whose there is there there? Queer Directions and Ecocritical Orientations

orientation in them: environments arethe starting point for orientation‖ … ―the ‗here‘ of the body and the ‗where‘ of its dwelling‖ (8; the argument is thus related to familiar eco- phenomenological accounts of sense of place 9 ), but that ―here‖ does not mean that a particular orientation is given in or naturalized by that environment. Instead, orientation is an iterative body/environment directional relation shaped by sedimented past and compelling present desires, environmental affordances and contours, actions and prohibitions. To quote Merleau-Ponty, ―what counts for the orientation of my spectacle is not my body as it in fact is, as a thing in objective space, but as a system of possible actions, a virtual body with its phenomenal ‗place‘ defined by its task and situation‖ (qtd. in Ahmed, 66, my emphases). For Ahmed, sexual orientation is profoundly directional and spatial (as are many shaping metaphors for sexual attraction); similarly, corporeal relations of being oriented and ―knowing where one is going‖ are shaped by a compulsory heterosexuality that privileges some attractions and directions over others, marking bodies with certain (straight) lines and activities and not others (I particularly like her assertion that ―compulsory heterosexuality is a form of RSI [repetitive strain injury]‖ [91]). Ahmed thus creates a dynamic understanding of spatially-transformed bodies as they take on tasks and situations in bodily-transformed spaces. 10 Rather than a naturalizing sense of place, then, Ahmed offers us a questioning of what and whose sense makes ―sense‖ of place in the first place (and how); for ecocritics, as I will (I hope) pursue in my own work in the future, she suggests a way of asking about the proximate sensibilities of bodies in places that acknowledges the multiple corporeal and ecological entanglements of any such sensibility, including everything from deeply-inscribed lines and habits of global commodity exchange to intimate relations of touching and reaching (and, qua Morton, performing) between particular human and other-than-human creatures.

Bulletin boards for enhancing the writing skills among students of 10 th grade at unidad educativa Manglaralto, Santa Elena, province of Santa Elena, school year 2015-2016.

This research paper is focused on the implementation of bulletin boards in order to enhance the writing skills in 10th grade students at Unidad Educativa Manglaralto. Bulletin boards are used as a visual education tool in the classroom in order to improve the students’ writing interests and creativity by managed in group. This research was implemented in three weeks. Each week contained specific activities that encourage students to practice more writing. The main subjects of this research were the students of 10th grade, the researcher herself, the principal and the teacher as the collaborator. The data was acquired through classroom observations, interviews, and documentations; it was analyzed to obtain the results of the research, the use of school bulletin board in this study is believed to be effective improving the students’ writing practice. The students’ writing problems are lack writing practice; lack of motivation, the aspect of content, vocabulary, language use, and the organization can be reduced by implementing exercises series and bulletin board in the teaching and learning process of writing. Implementing bulletin board was also effective to improve the students’ motivation in the writing process. From the data obtained, it can be said that the students were more enthusiastic to attend the lesson. They had motivation to write. They were also able to create positive relationship when they worked in groups

First records of fleas (Insecta: Siphonaptera) from the Nelson´s kangaroo rat Dipodomys nelsoni (Rodentia: Heteromyidae) in Durango, Mexico

The genus Dipodomys belongs to the rodent family Heteromyidae, and is composed of 21 species, distributed in the arid and semiarid regions of southern Canada, United States, reaching to southern Mexico (Wilson and Reeder, 1993). The species D. nelsoni Merriam, 1907 (Nelson’s kangaroo rat) is distributed primarily in north-central Mexico, in the states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi and Nuevo Leon (Best, 1988; Hall, 1981; Williams et al., 1993). The species is strongly associated with arid and semiarid ecosystems, mainly in open desert communities (Best, 1988; Williams et al., 1993).

La Primera Guerra Mundial Real y el emergente holocausto nuclear

respect mentioned above. In the first case, human beings are perceived as disposable commodities and depersonalized inputs in the economic processes – unless completely marginalized as excessive human waste of otherwise rational processes. In the second case, human individuals are perceived as potential threat units which can be shot, bombed and tortured to death. Humanity in itself is perceived as untrustworthy composition of dehumanized objects which can be wasted for example through a Nuclear Holocaust. In both cases dehumanization is carried to its extreme. However, despite the general tendency toward dehumanization, the non-white others are considered the most disposable. In the context of emerging Nuclear Holocaust, one may point at the earlier concept mega-death which was coined as a unit referring at a million deaths caused by a nuclear strike – and popularized by a heavy music group which adopted the term as its name. Within the ruling and governing circles which are in favor of neo-liberal political program and/or new imperialist political program and their respective modalities of integral fascism, there is a tendency to support both civilian-commercial and military utilization on nuclear reactions. This is one example of the general tendency involving contempt of human beings and the humanity, which is included also in popularized easy greenish – and also in certain brands of green fundamentalist – thinking, that human beings are less important than other segments of flora and fauna without considering enough human beings as parts of the ecosystem and our common world. One may also ask, in relation to the discussion on climate change, whether the concern over the rising sea levels at least partially involves a worry that the well-to-do rich country inhabitants can also in the future enjoy their beach mansions, in the context of which it is nice to express concern over the survival possibilities of polar bears or poor country inhabitants whom happen to live at low-land coastal areas? 32

LES SIGNES DU MONDE

LES SIGNES DU MONDE

However, only some decades after, with the creation of the Ulm School of Design (Hochschule für Gestaltung), the application of the principles of design at the service of a company becomes evident and systematic. One of its precursors, Otl Aicher —to whom the creation of the concept of corporative image is attributed— asserts that when speaking of corporative image we should speak of its representative image, the intended appearance. Everything that exists has a form, a shape, a face. The form is not only image and edge; it is gesture, presence and behavior. The image is a philosophical and moral phenomenon. Corporative identity is not the visible aspect but the complete personality of the company; the figure should not been understood as an external appearance but as a manifestation of the whole: the company seems what it is, and represents what it is (Aicher 1991).

A New Determination of the Rotation Curve from
Galactic Disk Planetary Nebulae

A New Determination of the Rotation Curve from Galactic Disk Planetary Nebulae

In view of the previous discussions, the main con- clusions of this paper are the following: (i) Plane- tary nebulae present a relatively well defined rota- tion curve, which is very similar to the curve defined by the younger H II regions, although with a higher dispersion and generally somewhat lower velocities. As a comparison, our derived curves are similar to the Clemens (1985) curve, as shown in Figs. 2 to 5 and also to the more recent curve derived by Brand & Blitz (1993), which is also based on H I and H II region data. (ii) The derived rotation curves for PN do not show any decrease beyond the solar circle up to a distance of approximately 14 kpc, reinforcing the need of unobserved matter in the Galaxy, par- ticularly for R > R 0 . Again in this respect, our

Why are there no back-arc basins around the eastern Pacific margin?

Tatsumi (1989) discussed the magmatic processes in the mantle wedge in subduction zones. Amphibole and chlorite are dehydrated at depths of ~100 km in the dragged hydrated peridotite just beneath the volcanic front. The dehydration occurs for phlogopite at depths of 150 km, and for lawsonite-eclogite at depths of 250- 300 km (Figure 2). Through these processes, subduction components held in these hydrate materials are released with H 2 O, although part of them may be transported to

How geolocation is used in the local space and in general internet marketing: • Targeting	Ads	to	user’s	locality - ads could be targeted

How geolocation is used in the local space and in general internet marketing: • Targeting Ads to user’s locality - ads could be targeted

The biggest problem in assessing the error rates of geolocation data is the simple fact that there’s no way to really test well for accuracy. The one and only company which publicly states that it uses external auditing (Quova), provided by Pricewaterhouse Coopers, is apparently testing by comparing their geodata with large datasets where they know the physical locations of the users associated with the IP addresses. But, how broad is that comparison data? Is the testing comparison working the same as when users are dynamically being geotargeted through the data in real-time? Does data from just a few major ISPs (assuming that’s what’s being used) really represent the majority of internet users? Does it take into account the huge amount of corporate employees browsing during their workdays? (I’d guess not, since most large corporations probably shouldn’t be sharing the locational information associated with their employee’s IP addresses.) What’s the estimate for accuracy at the city-level and postal-code level? At best, this is only an estimation and not direct test results for accuracy, so we don’t know what the error rate really is. To be fair, it’s simply not possible for any of us to know the actual error rates involved, since it’s impossible to assess whether all internet users are being accurately geolocated through any of these services. We can only sample some amount of users, and decide whether that sample set should be considered representative of all usage or not.

Factors Affecting Sign Language Acquisition In Hearing Impaired Learners During Primary Education

Factors Affecting Sign Language Acquisition In Hearing Impaired Learners During Primary Education

Comprehending language growth in children who are hearing impaired has become even more challenging due to the fact that as individuals, children who are hearing impaired have significantly more variation in their language experiences than ordinary hearing children. Most of the factors influencing the development of hearing children also affect children who are hearing impaired, among them are diversity in their social environments, the socioeconomic status of their parents, early childhood diseases, and many others (Marschark, 2001). The hearing impaired have always encountered countless challenges, as their mode of communication makes them stand out from all other individuals where social communication is led by speech (Vaněk, 2009). Humans are distinguished from animals by language, and our understanding of the human language has been extended widely over the years from just spoken to the signed modality (Cripps and Supalla, 2012). In addition Meier (2002) described that the high quality level of study activity on signed languages during the 1970s and 1980s that boosted this unusual language modality into its overdue position as a member of the human language family. Furthermore, Magnuson (2000) remarkably indicated how the proficiency of linguistic has been called an essential requisite for human life. Among all hearing impaired (hearing impaired) individuals 95% of them are born into a community and family that has no experience with how hearing impaired people live and learn (Hauser, O’Hearn, McKee, Steider and Thew, 2010). A number of people place more value on the sense of vision, while others put greater value on sense of audition (Baham, 2008). Many hearing impaired parents experience feelings of joy and celebrate when they find out that their new-born is hearing impaired. This is not because their child’s loss of hearing, but rather their biological propensity to be more visually orientated (O’Hearn, McKee, Steider and Thew, 2010). In some cases, however hearing impaired learners might not be exposed to an accessible language for acquisition, as their hearing loss limit their exposure to spoken language, and children might not have sign language role models. Thus, they might show signs of language deprivation due to the lack of access to sufficient comprehensible input of language to fully develop an expressive language (Dostal and Wolbers, 2014). Vaněk, (2009) argued that it is reasonable to presume that just like any other language, sign language develops progressively, serving the needs of survival first, such as communication to get nourishment.

Shotton Hall is a large secondary comprehensive school with pupils aged from 11 to 16. It is based on the edge of a large council housing estate on the outskirts of Peterlee, a new town established in County Durham mainly to serve the needs of local mining communities. Pupils are mainly drawn from families living on the council estate usually on a very low income. Other pupils are brought in by bus from the more remote former pit villages that are spread around the edge of the town. Unemployment is rife in the local area and job opportunities for skilled workers are much harder to find than elsewhere in the UK. Shotton Hall became part of the CAN Academies initiative in 2002 and also became a Performing Arts College in the same year.

Writing against oneself: Chabani Manganyi as a Black autobiographical subject

Writing against oneself: Chabani Manganyi as a Black autobiographical subject

As a postcolonial society, it could be said — without fear of exaggeration — that South Africa has by far produced the most “life writing” or “autobiographical” writing. Of course, this didn’t begin with the end of apartheid but it is also complicated to write or think about this genre as anything but part of our postcolonial condition. The range of “life writing” is wide — including for example, the madam / maid autobiographies beginning with Elsa Joubert Die swerfjare van Poppie Nongena (1978; translated and published in English in 1980 as The long journey of Poppie Nongena) via Shula Marks’ Not either an experimental doll (1987) to Marlene van Niekerk’s Agaat (2010). This range covers both fiction and non-fiction since one of South Africa’s “reluctant” autobiographical subjects, the novelist J M Coetzee has written at least two “autre-biographical” accounts titled Boyhood: Scenes from a provincial life (1997) and Youth (2002). This distinction between the “fictional”, the “factional” and the “real” is also important to Manganyi’s memoir since he begins with a rumination on the dangers and pleasures of memory - or, what he terms, citing the work of Charles Fernyhough, “the ‘first-person nature of memory’” (2016: xv). Importantly, the spectrum that ranges from the “transparent” subject to the “reluctant” subject is also useful in understanding why someone such as Winnie Mandela has for example refused to surrender her story to the auto/biography so that writers are forced to write in her “absence” even though she is very much alive. Thus, texts such as Njabulo Ndebele’s The cry of Winnie Mandela: A novel (2003) open these many avenues for thinking about why auto/biography is an appealing genre for thinking about who a postcolonial subject might be.

Is there a phylogeny of Homo?

Is there a phylogeny of Homo?

A PHYLOGENY OF HOMO? Phylogenetics is a tool for developing hypotheses of species genealogy. It depends on the principle of parsimony, an assertion about the probability of causation that varies from one circumstance to another; for instance, hypotheses of species genealogy are poorly supported when the species are closely related. Phylogenetics cannot be justified at all below the species level for this reason and because the parsimony principle is invalid when there is reticulation. With the transfer of the habiline species out of Homo, several lines of evidence suggest that this genus has only a single lineage and a single species throughout the Pleistocene, so the issue is whether our species, evolving through the Pleistocene as a single unit of subdivided, interconnected populations, can have an internal phylogeny with a structure that could be interpreted with phylogenetic analysis. Lacking evidence that the pattern or magnitude of past variation was much different from today (Hawks and Wolpoff, 2001), the answer must clearly be in the negative (Templeton, 1998). The differences paleoanthro- pologists write about were surely present, but so were the similar evolu- tionary trends and the shared humanness revealed by evidence of human behavior. There is only one reasonable explanation for this—multire- gional evolution—and this evolutionary pattern relates populations in a species that does not even internally separate into distinct races, let alone into taxa of higher order.
