PUBLIC HEARINGS
Quasi-judicial public hearing request by Antoinette L. Van-Riel to revise a conditional use permit on Parcel 19430, approximately 3 acres in area, located at 781 Mt. Carmel Church Rd to add office use - business, professional and government, Williams County. This is a quasi-judicial public hearing for Antoinette VanRiel to revise the conditional permit of Parcel 19430, containing approximately three acres and located at 781 Mt. Caramel Church Road to add office, business profession and government use to the pre-existing business. As you can see on the zoning map, this property already has a conditional B1 zoning classification and has for about two decades.
It has changed ownership once again and they don't want to use the approved uses since the conditional use permit is only approved for the things they require. To add another use, they have to go back through the review process, which is what's happening here, to add an office use to the property. We have not heard anything from any neighboring property owners from any of the advertisements or anything of that nature.
There are no current violations and there have been no violations on this property since they were approved, which has been about 20 years. One of the things we like to do as entrepreneurs is invest in the area in which we are growing. For us, this is a property that allows us to own our existing business, which is already active, and also run it. Chatham County.
George Lucier: So you're moving your existing business from another location in Chatham County to this proposed location that you're requesting a conditional use permit amendment for, is that correct.
BOARD PRIORITIES
So you are moving your existing business from another location in Chatham County to this proposed location. You are requesting the change for the conditional use permit, is that correct?
PUBLIC INPUT SESSION
I am a resident of Chatham County and the Education Chair of the East Chatham County NAACP. WHEREAS the confederate statue in front of the historic courthouse in Pittsboro was purchased by and is owned by the Winnie Davis Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC); and. RESOLVED, That the Chatham County Democratic Party supports a request to the Chatham County Commissioners to take action necessary to return the monument in front of the Historic Courthouse in Pittsboro to its owner, the UDC.
The New Jersey Monument in New Bern, erected in 1908, where the United Daughters of the Confederacy hosted a reception for the Union Veterans families. Did you know that the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Winnie Davis Chapter, were the presenters of this 6-foot plaque. Not even the 911 monument on HWY 501, because its custodian is private, just like the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Within a few years, fundraising for the statue in this city center began, with racist terror and oppression *as expressed by community leaders*. My name is Sarah Beck, and I am here today to express my support for the Chatham County Democrats' resolution to return the Confederate statue to the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The United Daughters of the Confederacy justified Jim Crow laws and glorified the Ku Klux Klan for "maintaining order."
In the 1960s, the height of the Civil Rights Movement, statues were again produced and erected en masse in the South. Thank you ladies and gentlemen for allowing me to speak out against the removal of the statue located in the courthouse. I contend that the statue placed in the court yard in honor and courage of Pvt.
I am here tonight as a citizen of Chatham County, but also as the president of the Western Chapter of the NAACP. I didn't understand because it was erected in 1907 after the end of the Civil War, a whole generation later. However, if it would make sense for the Council to try to return the statue to the Daughters of the Confederacy or relocate it to the Chatham Historical Museum or elsewhere.
However, refusing to remove the statue on these grounds would require a very close and technical reading of the statute. Chatham residents will speak about the Confederate monument in front of the Courthouse and demand that the Commissioners return it to its owner, the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Commissioner Howard made a motion to direct staff to further investigate the possibility of the County removing the statue and rededicating it to the United Daughter.
Commissioner Howard, seconded by Vice President Hales, made a motion to direct staff to look into options for removing the statue and returning it to the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
