________________________________________________________

The Board of Commissioners (“the Board”) of the County of Chatham, North Carolina, met in the Northwood High School Cafeteria, 301 Northwood High School Road, located in Pittsboro, North Carolina, at 8:28 PM on June 29, 2010.

Present: Sally Kost, Chair; George Lucier, Vice Chair; Commissioners Carl Thompson and Tom Vanderbeck

Staff Members Present:

Charlie Horne, County Manager; Jep Rose, County Attorney; Tom Bender, Fire Marshal CALL TO ORDER

The Chair called the meeting to order at 8:28 PM.

PYROTECHNICS

Chair Kost explained that a new provision in the general statutes requires that the Board of Commissioners approve all permits for pyrotechnical displays. Chair Kost indicated that there are three applications for pyrotechnical displays for the upcoming July 4th holiday. The Fire Marshal has indicated that his office will ensure compliance with all applicable codes, perform inspections of the sites, and have a piece of fire apparatus and firefighters stand by during and after the display.

The three requested permits are: Governors’ Club; Bennett Baptist Church and Donnie Barnes/Carefree Ranch.

Commissioner Lucier moved, seconded by Commissioner Vanderbeck, to approve the three pyrotechnical display permits with the provision that all safety procedures are followed in accordance with the County Fire Marshal. The motion carried four (4) to zero (0).

Fire Marshal Bender thanked the Board for taking action and explained that many of the fire marshals across the county were unaware of the new requirements.

ADJOURNMENT

Commissioner Lucier moved, seconded by Commissioner Thompson, to adjourn the meeting. The motion carried four (4) to zero (0), and the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 PM.
