High School Sexual and Reproductive Health Presentation Teacher Guide

Session 1: Sexually Transmitted Infections and Condom Demonstration (1 hour and 20 minutes)

Slide 1: Welcome, introductions and overview of both sessions.

Slides 2-3: Discuss difference between the terms STD and STIs.

Slides 4-7: (10 minutes) Activity 1: “Who Is Safe?” Students write down on paper words that they think describe someone that is at risk of getting an STI and someone who is not. Discuss each person on the three slides-their behaviors and ways they could reduce their risk (focusing the behavior and not the individual).

Slide 8: STI Facts

Slide 9: Discuss that half of all sexually active young people will get an STI before the age of 25 years old.

Slide 10: Discuss common risk behaviors to consider.

Slide 11: Behavior Risk Spectrum

Slide 12: Ask students what they think is the most common symptom of an STI.

Slide 13: List of common STI symptoms (remembering STIs are often asymptomatic).

Slides 14-15: (25 minutes total: 5 minutes small groups, 20 minutes to present) Activity 2: Individual STI Group Presentations. Hand out STIs among small groups (3-5 students per group) (Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, HIV/AIDS, Genital Warts/HPV, Herpes, Syphilis, Trichomoniasis, Hepatitis B) and have students answer questions. Ask each student group to present their STI to class and use slides 16-22 to help facilitate.

Slide 21: Genital Warts/HPV Slide 22: Hepatitis B

Slide 23: Discuss definition and difference between HIV and AIDS.

Slide 24: Discuss HIV/AIDS myths and facts. Then have final student group present information to class.

Slide 25: Review main messages to summarize all information presented on STIs.

Slide 26: Review of Behavior Risk Spectrum

Slide 27: Discuss ways students can reduce their risk using the 5 Ps.

Slide 28: (5 minutes) Discuss barrier methods: Male Condoms: Pass around male condoms to students. Emphasize best practices for condoms.

Slide 29: Male condom demonstration. In addition to the condom demonstration or as an alternate option perform the Condom Line Up Activity. Ask for 11 student volunteers. Pass out laminated sheets with different steps of proper condom use. Ask students to stand up with their step and place themselves in a line in order in front of the class.

Slide 30: Dental Dams

Slide 31: (5 minutes) Female Condoms: Pass around female condoms to students.

Slide 32: Female condom demonstration.

Slide 33: Thank you and wrap up for the day.

Session 2: Birth Control and County Resources (1 hour and 20 minutes)

Slide 1: Welcome, introductions, and overview of session. Review previous session and any questions from question box.

Slide 2: (10 minutes) Activity 3: “Guided Imagery, Purchasing an Embarrassing Health Product at the Store” Read the script aloud to students as they imagine what they would be feeling and thinking if they were buying a product, such as condoms or birth control, at the store. Debrief the activity afterwards with students.

Slide 3: Importance of males being knowledgeable of modern contraception.

Slide 4: Contraception Definition

Slides 5-6: Why to use or not use birth control? Ask participants about the reasons someone might have for using or not using a birth control method?

Slide 7: Infertility Misconceptions

Slide 8: Contraception Effectiveness Misconceptions

Slide 9: Anatomy Review and discuss how modern contraception works.

Slide 10: Provide an overview of methods

Slides 11-12: (10 minutes) Activity 4: Contraception Method Effectiveness Spectrum. Ask for student volunteers. Pass out laminated sheets with names and images of different types of contraception. Ask students how effective they think each type of birth control is in preventing pregnancy. Ask students to stand up and place the name of the contraception on the spectrum.

Slide 13: Review different types of hormonal methods and their effectiveness.

Slide 14: Review different types of non-hormonal methods and their effectiveness.

Slide 15: Discuss the percentage of effectiveness for each type of contraception under perfect and typical conditions.

Slide 22: Discuss information about where and how to receive family planning services and contraception.

Slide 23: Emergency Contraception

Slide 24: Discuss information about where and how to receive emergency contraception.

Slide 25: Discuss barrier methods: Condoms Slide 26: Discuss specific condom types

Slide 27: Other Methods: Vaginal Spermicides and Withdrawal Slide 28: Abstinence

Slide 29: (5 minutes) Activity 5:Making a Reproductive Health Appointment” or Alternate Activity 6: “Talking it Through” Ask for two student volunteers to role play either scenario in front of class.

Slides 30-31: (10 minutes) Optional Activity 6: Locating Sexual and Reproductive Health Resources. If time allows, have students use their computers to look up what services the Chatham County Public Health Department offers.

Slide 32: Review Chatham County Public Health Department locations and services.

Slide 33: Review Piedmont Community Health Centers locations and services.

Slide 34: Review Planned Parenthood Health Centers locations and services.

Slide 35: Review Chatham County Social Health Council location and services.

Slide 36: Review what students can do and key take home messages.

Slide 37: Thank you and wrap up for both sessions.
