I love rocks, and I love to collect rocks.

Some rocks are too big to

carry home. Some rocks are so small you

can hold many in one hand!

(6)

My friends like to add to my rock collection.

Sometimes they give me things that are not rocks.

A brick can be made of rocks of different sizes, but bricks are not

rocks.

A shell is not a rock.

4

(7)

I have rocks of many different shapes.

Some rocks have straight sides and some are round.

5

(8)

I have rocks of many different colors.

Granite can be many colors.

6

(9)

7

(10)

I have rocks with layers and stripes.

Rocks like gneiss (pronounced “nice”) have layers. This one looks like a sandwich!

8

(11)

I have rocks with spots and sparkle.

Snowflake obsidian has white spots.

9

(12)

I have rocks that feel rough.

10

(13)

I have rocks that feel smooth.

My uncle gave me this rock. It is smooth because it has been tumbled.

11

(14)

Most of my rocks fit in my hand, but rocks can be different sizes.

12

(15)

Boulders are smaller than mountains and larger than soccer balls. I have pictures of boulders because

they are not easily moved.

Boulders are big rocks.

Look at those boulders!

These boulders are in a park. Dad said they used a machine to move them.

13

(16)

Cobbles are smaller than boulders and larger than pebbles.

Cobbles are medium-size rocks.

Cobbles are easy to move, but I wouldn’t want to move all of

these!

Cobbles can be used to make roads or pathways.

14

(17)

Pebbles are smaller than cobbles and larger than grains of sand.

Pebbles are small rocks.

15

(18)

A grain of sand is a tiny piece of rock.

How many rocks are in this jar?

16

(19)

I love rocks. Do you?
