Vowel-Consonant-Silent e Activity

Objective

• The student will read closed-syllable words, apply a silent e to those words, and then read the new vowel-consonant-silent e syllable words.

Materials

• Vowel-consonant-silent e word cards (copy, cut, and fold word cards on the dotted line)

• Student response sheets

• Pencils Activity

1. Provide each student with a student response sheet and pencil.

2. Students place the word cards on the table in front of them.

3. Students take turns selecting one of the word cards and reading the closed-syllable word on the card.

4. Students record the closed-syllable word on their response sheets.

5. Students open the silent e portion of the word card and read the new word (applying the vowel-consonant-silent e syllable rule).

6. Students record the vowel-consonant-silent e word on their response sheets.

7. Students continue the activity until they have read all of the word cards.
