Turmeric being the source of curcuminoids (curcumin) has numerous pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and phytoceutical properties in addition to being a nontoxic constituent of the diet and a natural colorant; the most important priority is to develop varieties with high yield of curcumin. This coupled with good organic fertilizer–responsive varieties resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses will be the objective of turmeric breeders. Since most of the available variability in turmeric was exploited in selection, use of recombination breeding will open up hitherto nonavailable variability for developing new, improved varieties. Increasing the spectrum of variation through somaclonal variation and in vitro mutagenesis is another important approach that needs to be intensified.

Identifying varieties with newer pharmaceutically important compounds also must make a beginning in turmeric because turmeric is considered as a wonder plant.
