Installation guidelines
Before youbegininstallingoptions inyourserver,readthefollowinginformation:
v Readthesafetyinformationbeginningonpagev andtheguidelines in“Handling static-sensitivedevices”onpage 10.Thisinformationwillhelpyou worksafely withyour serverandoptions.
v Makesure thatyou haveanadequatenumberofproperlygrounded electrical outletsforyourserver, monitor, andotherdevicesthatyouwillconnect tothe server.
v Backupallimportantdatabefore youmakechangestodiskdrives.
v Haveasmallflat-bladescrewdriveravailable.
v Youdonotneedtoturnofftheservertoinstallor replacehot-swappower supplies,hot-swapdrives,orhot-plugUniversalSerial Bus(USB)devices.
v Theorangecolor oncomponentsandlabelsidentifieshot-swaporhot-plug components.You caninstallorremovehot-swapandhot-plugcomponentswhile theserverisrunning,providedthattheserverisconfiguredto supportthis capability.Seetheinstructionsinthischapterfor moreinformationabout removingandinstalling hot-swapandhot-plugcomponents.

System reliability guidelines
Tohelpensurepropercooling andsystemreliability,makesurethat:
v Eachofthedrive bayshasa driveora fillerpanelandelectromagnetic compatibility(EMC)shieldinstalledinit.
v Iftheserverhasredundantpower,each ofthepower-supplybayshasa power supplyinstalledinit.
v Thereisadequatespacearoundtheservertoallow theservercoolingsystem to workproperly. Leaveapproximately50mm(2in.)of openspacearoundthefront andrearof theserver.Donotplaceobjects infrontof thefans. Forproper coolingandairflow, replacetheservercoverbeforeturningontheserver.
Operatingtheserverforextendedperiodsoftime (over30minutes) withthe servercoverremovedmightdamageservercomponents.
Wheninstallingtheserverinarack, makesure thatspaceisavailablearound theserverto enabletheservercoolingsystem toworkproperly.Seethe documentationthatcomeswiththerack foradditionalinformation.
v Youhave followedthecabling instructionsthatcomewithoptional adapters.
v Youhave replacedafailedfanassoonaspossible.
v Youreplaceahot-swapdrive within2minutes ofitsremoval.

Working inside the server with the power on
Your serversupports hot-swapdevicesandisdesignedtooperatesafelywhileitis turned onandthecoverisremoved.Followtheseguidelineswhenyouworkinside a serverthatisturnedon:
v Avoidwearingloose-fittingclothingonyourforearms.Button long-sleevedshirts beforeworkinginsidetheserver;donotwearcufflinkswhileyouareworking insidetheserver.
v Donotallowyournecktieor scarfto hanginsidetheserver.
v Removejewelry,suchasbracelets,necklaces,rings,andloose-fittingwrist watches.
v Removeitemsfromyourshirt pocket,suchaspens andpencils,thatcouldfall intotheserverasyoulean overit.
v Avoiddroppinganymetallicobjects,suchaspaperclips,hairpins,andscrews, intotheserver.
Handling static-sensitive devices
Attention: Staticelectricity candamageelectronicdevices,includingyourserver.
Toavoiddamage,keep static-sensitivedevicesintheirstatic-protectivepackages until youarereadyto installthem.
Toreducethepossibilityofelectrostaticdischarge,observethefollowing precautions:
v Limityour movement.Movementcan causestaticelectricity tobuilduparound you.
v Handlethedevicecarefully,holdingit byitsedgesor itsframe.
v Donottouchsolderjoints,pins,orexposedcircuitry.
v Donotleavethedevice whereotherscanhandleanddamageit.
v Whilethedeviceisstillinitsstatic-protectivepackage,touchit toanunpainted metalpartof theserverfor atleast2seconds.Thisdrainsstaticelectricity from thepackageandfromyourbody.
v Removethedevice fromitspackageandinstallit directlyintotheserverwithout settingdownthedevice.Ifit isnecessary tosetdownthedevice,putitbackinto itsstatic-protectivepackage.Donotplacethedeviceonyourservercoveroron ametalsurface.
v Takeadditionalcarewhenhandlingdevicesduringcold weather.Heatingreduces indoorhumidityandincreasesstaticelectricity.

Adapter considerations
Before youinstallanadapter,reviewthefollowinginformation:
v Readthedocumentation thatcomeswithyouroperating system.
v Locatethedocumentationthatcomeswiththeadapterandfollowthose instructionsinaddition totheinstructionsinthischapter. Ifyouneedto change theswitchor jumpersettingsonyour adapter, followtheinstructionsthatcome withtheadapter.
v Installationof anAGPvideoadapterintheAGPslot isnotsupported.
v Youcaninstalla only32-bit adapterinthe32-bitPCIslot1 and64-bitadapters inthe64-bit PCI-Xslots2 through5.
Note: Donotinstallanyadapters otherthanthestandardvideoadapterin mini-PCI slot6.Other adaptertypesarenotsupported.
