Today’s law enforcement professionals must be able to apply the laws of Canada and those of the provinces. Therefore, students require more than a basic understanding of the Canadian justice system and how it applies to the field of law enforcement. In this course, students acquire foundational knowledge and skills related to the development, structure and practical operation of the Canadian criminal justice system. The course is geared towards students who will become practioners in the criminal justice field and will require knowledge of their role in relation to the justice process as a whole. Throughout the course, students will have an opportunity to critically analyze the various components of the justice system, as well as examine the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the system.

OL Career Preparation – PFPR
This course is designed to familiarize students with the police, border services, corrections and security guard employment process. This is a pass/fail course; in order to pass the student must attend 80% of the classes and complete four tests, one in each of the four areas. Students wishing to pursue a career in policing, border services, corrections or security need to be aware of the specific processes involved in their employment applications to municipal, provincial, federal or corporate organizations.

OL Community and Social Services
This course will explore the structure and administration of community organizations and social services that operate within and adjacent to the criminal justice system. The course will further explore the issues, trends, and legislation that impact community social services. The student will be required to perform 40 hours of direct community study while applying knowledge obtained through the course modules.

This course introduces students to theory and models of community policing and their applications. Problem-solving models and the role of alternative dispute resolution strategies will be examined. OL Conflict Management
This course will introduce you to the process of conflict management from the perspective of law enforcement intervention. The course will examine some occurrences commonly encountered by police officers and will examine the use of relevant legislation and problem management techniques to assist with effectively managing such occurences.

OL Contemporary Canadian Social Problems
In this course, current social science paradigms and theories will be used as a framework for analysis of contemporary social issues relevant to vocations in police services. Topics such as crime, violence, abuse, social stratification, ageism, and racism will be included. The course focus will be on how individual behaviours collectively create social issues.

This course will also enable the student to analyze the rights and obligations of citizens involving areas of civil law. Building on the concepts introduced in Lifestyle Management 1 or Fitness 1, students will learn appropriate body movement, body balance and fundamentals of adapting the body to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Students will gain an understanding of nutrition and body composition and their relationship to fitness level. This class will also ready any student to meet the standards for constable selection. In law enforcement, fitness is a necessity. Some employers require candidates to pass a fitness or skills abilities test. This course is geared to preparing students to develop the skills necessary for success in regards to fitness.

Students apply a variety of health and fitness related principles to continue to improve their fitness and wellbeing. Students recognize potential health problems associated with shift work and a demanding job in law enforcement and learn the appropriate strategies to deal with these health problems. A stronger emphasis on the PREP, PARE, FORCE and OPFA testing standards prepare students to challenge these testing protocols as they look to the recruitment process for constable selection.

This course provides an examination of various theoretical explanations of criminal and deviant behaviour including the sociological, biological and psychological perspectives. Criminological theory is related to various types of criminal activity. The reality of crime in Canada including victimology is examined through crime statistics as are the correlations of criminal behaviour. The impact of theory on the development and effectiveness of the criminal justice system is discussed with emphasis on future trends within the system.

Students interpret and apply provincial statutes. Topics studied include arrest, search and seizure authorities, common offences and the involvement of non-police agencies. In this course the students will develop the knowledge, skills and ability to locate and apply sections of the Provincial Traffic Law. Students will practise locating topics in the Acts and Regulations, will master the definitions required to interpret traffic law and will apply the law concerning Police Authorities, driver’s licences, permits and rules of the road. Students will develop and practise interpersonal strategies and procedures for dealing with motor vehicle stops.
