6. Other Products

6.1 Data

We sent Mauro Gonzales’ Araucaria fire chronology to the NOAA Fire History database (Connie Woodhouse).

7. Capacity Building

7.1 Students trained & scholarships

Rocío Urrutia, research assistant of Laboratory of Dendrochronology attended to the Summer School of Dendroclimatology at the Tree-ring Lab of University of Arizona. USA. in May-Jun 2004. IAI CRN03 provided part of the funding.

Jorge Moya, a masters student of Universidad Austral, was trained on the development of Polylepis chronologies in the Laboratory of Dendrochronology and Environmental History at IANIGLA, CRICYT, Mendoza, in May of 2004. IAI CRN03 provided the complete funding.

8. Regional Collaboration/Networking

There is a permanent collaboration with Ricardo Villalba from IANIGLA, CRICYT (Mendoza, Argentina) for field work in Chile and Argentina, as well as exchange visits for scientific collaboration and the preparation of publications.

Carlos Le Quesne has collaborated, visited and developed papers with D. Stahle (U. Arkansas, USA), and with José Boninsegna (IANIGLA, Mendoza).

Brian Luckman has actively collaborated during the last 5 years with our research regarding field work, development of proposals, publications, advising students and young researchers and collaborated in many other ways.

The Center of Quaternary Studies (CEQUA) of the Universidad de Magallanes, Punta Arenas was established in 2002 to foster interdisciplinary studies of Quaternary and recent environments in Patagonia. JuanCarlos Aravena is currently on leave from the Centre completing a doctoral programme in Canada. CEQUA, in conjunction with Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland, organized an international symposium “New Approaches to the Quaternary Sciences in Fuego-Patagonia" that was held in Puerto Natales from April 4-9, 2005. This meeting brought together 17 invited international experts and more than 30 local speakers to discuss their research work and possible future collaborative research. JuanCarlos Aravena sat on the organizing committee and Brian Luckman and Ricardo Villalba gave invited presentation at this meeting. The discussions at this meeting resulted in several promising potential collaborations with local and international scientists in future and/or comparative studies of climate variability and related topics for this region.
