Appendix D: Email to Principal for Consent/Email Recruitment Dear ____,

I am a rising senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, studying Human

Development and Family Studies and Psychology. I plan to attend graduate school in the future to become a music therapist.

This semester I have had the opportunity to begin working on an Honors thesis in the School of Education at UNC. The topic of my thesis is arts integration in education. I am particularly interested in doing a case study of an arts integration program so I can observe arts integration in a natural setting and identify perceived benefits and limitations to this program.

After hearing about [school] from one of my Honors advisors who is a Music educator and then reading about the school on the website, I determined that your school would be a great fit for my project. I would like to observe in the classroom setting and also send an electronic survey to teachers at the school and if possible interview several teachers and administrators who would be willing to have a more in depth conversation with me about the topic of the perceived benefits and limitations of an arts integration program. The results of the study would keep the identity of the school and participants anonymous.

If you give your consent I will send an email to you, the teachers, and a couple other administrators containing further information about the research.

Thank you in advance for your careful consideration of this request. I hope to hear good news from you in the near future.

Sincerely, Hannah Godat
