to Bultmann, Jesus* appeal was to the w ill o f man;
according to Bornkamm, Jesus* appeal is indeed to the
w ill o f man, but in such a way that he understands the demand, even if that demand be d if fic u lt or even
paradoxical.
This emphasis on understanding becomes clear fir s t o f a ll in Jesus* use o f the parable as a means o f com municating h is message o f the Kingdom o f God. The parable was used a lso by the rabbis in explaining the meaning o f a passage o f the Law,
