6.14.1. HISTORY

6.14.1.1. Creation

The Young Forensic Scientists Forum (YFSF) was established in 1995 by Dr. Steven Batterman when he was President of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS). The YFSF began as a breakfast meeting of about 15 people and has continued to grow since that time. The first special session was staged at the 1996 meeting, the first BYOS was held at the 2000 meeting, and the first poster session was held at the 2004 meeting.

6.14.1.2. Administration

Originally, the YFSF operated with a President and a Secretary; however, with the continued growth of the activities and interest in the YFSF, other offices have been established. In 2003, the offices of President, Secretary, and Program Chair were established and session chairs were named for each of the special events.

6.14.1.3. Mission

The YFSF is a group within the AAFS that is dedicated to the education,

enrichment, and development of emerging forensic scientists and future leaders in the field. The participants of the YFSF are drawn from all sections and membership statuses of the AAFS. The YFSF provides an avenue for new forensic scientists to interact with and become a part of the established forensic science community.

This is accomplished through the educational sessions at the AAFS annual meeting, via a monthly newsletter, through informational databases and the website.

Each year the YFSF officers will select a recipient of the YFSF Founder’s Award and it will be presented at the AAFS annual business meeting.

6.14.4.2. Criteria

6.14.5. SESSIONS 6.14.5.1. History

In the past the YFSF has had a breakfast meeting, a BYOS presentation, a panel presentation, and a poster session.

6.14.5.2. Academic Session

The YFSF coordinates an academic session for the AAFS annual meeting each year.

members of the forensic science community that revolve around a theme for the session. The theme of the session should change each year and the topics presented should relate to the theme. Some examples from the past are “Establishing a

Successful Foundation for a Career in Forensic Science,” “Expectations and

Realities of a Career in Forensic Science,” and “Non-Traditional Careers in Forensic Science.” The themes should change each year so that participants can attend the session for several years without seeing the same material and to keep the program progressive.

6.14.5.3. Breakfast Session

The breakfast meeting is held on Thursday morning and is also serves as the business meeting. The first few minutes are dedicated to reports and new business by the officers, and the remainder of the time is determined by the program chair and breakfast session chair. Until 2004, the breakfast meeting was strictly a

business and recruitment meeting; however, at the 2004 meeting it was decided to dedicate a small portion of the meeting to business and to use the remainder of the time to further educate the attendees. In 2004, the topic was “Breakfast with a Side of Resumes.” Again, the theme should change each year, and the program chair and session chair determine the best use of time.

6.14.5.4. YFSF BYOS

The YFSF BYOS is generally held on the same evening as the Academy-wide BYOS and is purposely scheduled a few hours earlier to avoid a conflict between the two sessions. The chair of the BYOS is expected to recruit as many presentations bearing in mind the possibility of a scheduling conflict.

6.14.5.5. Bonus Session

At the 2001 annual meeting, the YFSF held its first Bonus Session after the YFSF academic session. The session was a panel presentation titled “Expectations and Realities of a Career in Forensic Science.” The following year a second panel presentation was held, in 2003 a resume-writing workshop was held, and in 2004 a poster session was held. These bonus sessions are held on Tuesday night after the academic session, and with a new topic and evaluation conducted each year.

If one particular session is well attended, it could be a reoccurring session that is presented each year.
