C Choose an appropriate cleansed (see page 22), tumbled or shaped crystal. If you wish to wear your amulet, choose one with a hole.

Crystal shamanism

The use of crystals goes back a long way. Eight and a half thousand years ago a young shaman was laid to rest on a bed of red Haematite at Bad Dürrenberg, her magical grave goods beside her. They included numerous bones, 31 tiny Flint blades in a crane’s bone box and a carefully fashioned stone ball that could be rolled rather like dice.

Five thousand years ago in Mesopotamia, a woman was interred with 12 pebbles beside her, her only grave goods.

They were collected from 200 miles away. It is tempting to think, along with the professor who uncovered the grave, that they had a specific purpose: divination. Early Mesopotamian sources describe an elmeshu (probably clear Quartz) that functioned as an oracle stone.

In the Old Testament the breastplate of the high priest was not only studded with flashing crystals, it also carried the Urim and Thummin, oracular items that ascertained the will of God and the future of the Jewish nation. These are believed to have been meteorites, which were highly sacred throughout the ancient world (see Chapter 18).

Crystal healing

Crystals were also part of early medical practice and this continued into more modern times. Crystals listed in the medical papyri of ancient Egypt formed an important part of treatment right up to the eighteenth century. The tradition passed into the magical and medical lexicons of East and West, and crystals are the basis for many modern pharmaceuticals. Minerals such as lithium, found in Kunzite and other depression-alleviating crystals, are still used in conventional medicine today.

modern usage

Quite simply, the modern world couldn’t function without crystals. They are found throughout industry, generating and storing energy. Rare-earth minerals are highly prized in the innovative-technology field. Diamond bits are effective cutting tools. Kyanite is found in spark plugs. Medical lasers are focused through Rubies. Quartz powers ultrasound.

Computers run on silicon chips – thin slivers of Quartz.

Russian naval boats are being coated with anti-radar paint created from reflective fullerene-based Shungite, a mineral used in crystal healing for protection and wellbeing. Many modern crystals are manufactured, but have their base in the natural crystal world.

Shungite contains virtually all the minerals in the periodic table.

A rare carbon mineral, it is composed of fullerenes – ‘Buckyballs’

(spherical) or ‘Buckytubes’ (cylindrical). It is found only in Karelia, northern Russia, and is at least 2 billion years old. It was laid down before organic life was established, and yet carbon-based minerals normally arise from decayed organic matter, so it has been suggested that an enormous meteorite hit the Earth and created the crater in which Lake Onega and the Shungite formed. Although the lake is highly polluted, the water flowing from it is purified by the Shungite and has been used for healing for hundreds of years.

Research has shown that Shungite is antiviral and antibacterial.

It absorbs whatever is hazardous to health, whether that be pesticides, free radicals, bacteria and the like, or EMF, microwave and other vibrational emissions. It transforms water into a

biologically active life-enhancing substance, whilst at the same time removing harmful micro-organisms and pollutants (see page 243). It boosts physical wellbeing and has a powerful effect on the immune system. Restoring emotional equilibrium, it transmutes stress into a potent energetic recharge. Wear Shungite or place it on the source of EMF emissions such as computers and cell phones to eliminate their detrimental effect on sensitive human energy systems.
