Leaves of Absence and Impact on Research

2011/9 - 2012/8 Special, University of Maryland at College Park

Leave of absence at Twitter. From 2010 to 2012, I was away from the University of Maryland working at Twitter full-time as a Research Scientist, first on sabbatical and then on a leave of absence. This had both positive and negative impacts on research.

Positives: I gained invaluable experience working in a production environment tackling real-world problems, where I had the opportunity to help build products used by hundreds of millions of users and infrastructure that manages tens of petabytes of data. Working at Twitter greatly broadened my research and resulted in numerous publications:

conference papers 13, 15, 16, 25, 37, 42, 43, 45, 50, 51, 55, 56, 58, 59, 61, 63, 68. Negatives: During the time I was away, I continued to supervise existing students, but did not take on any additional supervisory responsibility for new students. Thus, my direct impact on highly qualified personnel in the university context is lower than it would have been had I remained at the university.

2010/6 - 2011/8 Sabbatical, University of Maryland at College Park Sabbatical at Twitter
