Kaphas are naturally dense, heavy, oily, and sweet in energy so they need foods that contain the opposite qualities. That means more light, stimulating, dry, bitter, astringent, and pungent items. These foods restore their imbalances, such as lethargy, weight gain, swelling, mucus buildup, and sluggish metabolism.

Through a well-balanced diet, Kaphas can gain energy and lose weight to regain balance.

Fruits

Kaphas should only have fruits that are light and minimally sweet or sour.

Kaphas tend to gain weight easily, and the excess sugar in fruits can add up.

Similarly, tropical fruits like bananas and mangoes are particularly sweet, heavy, dense, and watery, which add to Kaphas’ imbalances. Kaphas should choose astringent fruit and only have one serving a day.

Go for organic whenever possible, especially on fruit whose skin you eat, like apples and berries.

For optimal digestion, consume fruits by themselves and 30 minutes before meals.

Fruits Kaphas should enjoy:

Apples

Apricots (fresh) Berries (all) Cherries Cranberries Lemons Limes Pears

Pomegranates

Fruits Kaphas should avoid or minimize:

Avocados Bananas

Coconuts (meat) Dates

Mangoes

Vegetables

Vegetables should be the center of Kaphas’ diets because they are very cleansing.

Those that are bitter, pungent, or astringent are the best for helping Kaphas reduce weight and uplift their bodies. Avoid vegetables that are heavy, dense, oily, or watery, such as heavy stews, mashed potatoes, tempuras, and oily stir-fries.

Kaphas have weak digestive systems, so it’s best for them to lightly cook their vegetables, such as via steaming or roasting, to make them easier to digest.

Avoid using excess oil, and try water-sautéing vegetables. It’s best for Kaphas to avoid raw foods, but if you choose to consume them, they’re best at lunch when your digestive fire is strongest and you have the rest of the day to break down the meal.

Vegetables Kaphas should favor:

Artichokes Asparagus Beets Bell peppers Broccoli Brussels sprouts Cabbage Carrots Cauliflower Celery Leafy greens Peas

Peppers (sweet and hot) Radishes

Spinach Sprouts Turnips

Vegetables Kaphas should reduce:

Olives Potatoes Pumpkins Squash

Grains

Kaphas should be mindful of their portions of grains because they’re sweet and building and can cause weight gain. Grains should be light and dry in energy.

Stay completely away from breads, pastas, and pastries.

Grains Kaphas should go for:

Amaranth Barley Buckwheat Millet Quinoa

Grains Kaphas should avoid:

Pasta Wheat

White or brown rice Yeasted breads

Legumes

Legumes are great for Kaphas because they are astringent in taste,

counterbalancing their natural sweetness. Kaphas should be sure their beans are well spiced, especially with cumin, to make them easier to digest.

Legumes Kaphas should choose:

Black beans Chickpeas Lentils

Mung daal (mung beans) Split peas

Tempeh

Tofu (served hot)

Legumes Kaphas should avoid:

Kidney beans Miso

Soy beans Soy cheese

Soy sauce

Tofu (served cold)

Dairy

Kaphas are naturally attracted to cheese and ice cream, but it’s the worst thing for them. Kapha types should avoid dairy products because they’re heavy and cooling, just like Kapha energy. Like increases like, and Kaphas need to stay away from anything that makes them more heavy, dense, and cold.

Some Kaphas can digest goat milk products without a problem because they contain less lactose and are lighter in energy. However, nondairy milk is still the best option. I recommend unsweetened coconut, almond, or pea milk.

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts are heavy, dense, and oily and cause an imbalance in Kaphas. The only nuts Kaphas can have are soaked and peeled almonds, and even those should be

consumed in moderation. Seeds are always a better, lighter option for Kapha types.

Nuts and seeds Kaphas should choose:

Almonds (soaked and peeled) Chia seeds

Flaxseeds Hemp seeds Pumpkin seeds Sunflower seeds

Nuts and seeds Kaphas should reduce or avoid:

Excess nuts and nut butters

Animal Products

Kaphas should not incorporate too many animal products in their diet because these foods are particularly heavy in property, increasing Kapha. Excess protein can cause Kaphas to gain fat because they don’t require as much protein as the other Doshas. It is totally possible for Kaphas to get all the protein they need

from a plant-based diet, and this is recommended actually.

However, if you choose to consume animal products as a Kapha, select those that are light and dry. Eat animal products only in small amounts and

infrequently. Be sure all products are organic and preferably from a local farmer.

Animal products Kaphas should favor:

Chicken or turkey (white meat) Eggs (pasture-raised)

Fish (freshwater)

Animal products Kaphas should avoid:

Beef Buffalo

Chicken (dark meat) Lamb

Pork

Oils

Kaphas are already oily and heavy in nature so they don’t need much oil, although a little should still be incorporated in the Kapha diet. Choose light, unprocessed oils. Water-sautéing is also good idea for Kaphas.

Oils Kaphas should favor:

Almond oil

Extra-virgin olive oil (small amounts) Flaxseed oil

Ghee

Oils Kaphas should avoid:

Canola oil Safflower oil Soy oil

Sweeteners

Kaphas should steer clear of sweets because they make them heavier and denser.

The only sweetener Ayurveda recommends for Kaphas is raw honey in small amounts.

However, today we have sweeteners that don’t make an impact on blood sugar levels, such as monk fruit sweetener, stevia, and birchwood xylitol, which can be incorporated in a Kapha diet to satisfy a sweet tooth without attributing to

weight gain. I added an asterisk (*) to the new sweetener alternatives that did not exist in Ayurvedic times so you can differentiate.

Sweeteners Kaphas should favor:

Birchwood xylitol*

Honey (raw)

Monk fruit sweetener*

Stevia (liquid, organic)*

Sweeteners Kaphas should avoid:

Artificial sweeteners Barley malt

Date sugar Fructose

Honey (cooked, heated, or processed) Maple syrup

White sugar

AYURVEDIC ALERT

Look out for sneaky sugar hidden in savory foods such as sauces, dressings, and even ketchup. You’d be surprised by how much sugar you are

unknowingly consuming in your everyday meals thanks to these products. Try to make your own food from scratch to avoid these sneaky sugar sources.

Spices

Spices are especially medicinal for Kaphas because they stimulate the digestive fire and speed up metabolisms. All spices are wonderful for Kaphas, with the exception of excess salt. Ginger, cinnamon, coriander, chili powder, and cayenne

are particularly healing.

Spices Kaphas should favor:

Ajwan Anise Asafoetida Basil Bay leaf Black pepper Cardamom Cayenne Cinnamon Cloves Coriander Cumin Fennel Fenugreek Garlic Ginger Mint

Mustard seeds Nutmeg Oregano Paprika Rosemary Saffron Turmeric

Spices Kaphas should minimize:

Excess salt
