►The preposition в + prepositional case
в + prepositional case means 'in, inside' and is used:
(a) with containers: в коробке 'in the box'
(b) with most buildings, places: в аэропорту 'at the airport', в университете ' at the university'
(c) with certain parts of buildings: в ванной 'in the bathroom'
(d) with certain parts of theatres: в партере 'in the stalls' (e) with continents: в Африке 'in Africa', в Азии 'in Asia'
(f) with geographical features: в пустыне 'in the desert', в степи
'in the steppe', в тайге 'in the taiga' (g) with countries: в России 'in Russia'
(h) with mountain ranges that have plural names: в Альпах 'in the Alps'
(i) with towns and cities: в Москве 'in Moscow', в Париже 'in Paris'
(J) with city regions: в Отрадном 'in Otradnoe' (k) with parts of towns: в пригороде 'in the suburbs'
(1) with vehicles: Мы сидели в машине 'We were sitting in the
car', Он спал в автобусе 'He slept in the bus'
(m) with clothes, etc.: Он в галстуке 'He is wearing a tie'. Онав очках 'She is wearing glasses' (cf. Онаносит очки 'She wears glasses')

187 ►Spatial expressions with в оr наA number of nouns combine in the prepositional case with either
в or на (frequently with a different meaning; see also page 191) :
Самолёт в воздухе The aircraft is in the air
Я сидел в глубине зала I sat at the back of the hall Они играют во дворе They are playing in the yard

Note: Место 'place' combines with certain adjectives and pronouns: в другом месте 'somewhere else', в одном месте 'in the same place', в красивом месте'in a lovely spot'.
►Meanings of state оr condition
The dependent noun in prepositional phrases with в can denote state, condition, position, or form:
Он в отчаянии He is in despair
Всё в порядке Everything is in order
Онав курсе дела she is in the picture
Машина поломалась в пути The car broke down en route Он выбежал в панике He ran out in a panic
Онав хорошем настроение She is in a good mood
Мы были у них в гостях We were paying them a visit
►Expressions of time with в + prepositional case The preposition в is used
(a) with the prepositional case of месяц 'month' and the names of months:
в прошлом/в этом/в будущем месяце last/this/next month в январе, в феврале, в марте in January, February, March в октябре прошлого года last October
в ноябреэтого года this November в декабре будущего года next December (b) with the prepositional case (singular and plural) of год 'year'
and the names of particular years:
в прошлом/в этом/в будущем году last/this/next year Она родилась в 1986 году She was born in 1986 в двухтысячном году in the year 2.000 в две тысячи десятом году in 2,010
в сороковых годах ХХ (двадцатого) века in the 1940s (c) with the prepositional case of век/столетие 'century' and

(f) in asking 'at what time?' and in some expressions involving the time of day:

В + prepositional case is used:
(a) after words that denote accusation, confession, certainty, refusal:
Её обвинили в шантаже She was accused of blackmail Он признался в убийстве He confessed to murder

Ей отказали в визе She was refused a visa
(b) in phrases such as дело в том, что 'the fact is that', беда в том,
что 'the trouble is that', etc.
(c) in phrases denoting extent or degree: в какой–то мере 'in some measure', в высшей степени 'to the highest degree'.

На + prepositional case means 'on, on top of, on the surface of': на крыше 'on the roof', на полу 'on the floor', на стене 'on the wall', на столе 'on the table',
It is also used (see a/so в + prepositional case, page 185):
(a) with the names of certain places: на вокзале 'at the station,
railway terminus' , на даче 'at the country cottage', на заводе 'at the factory', на почте ' at the post office'. на почтамте ' at the main post office', на складе ' at the warehouse', на станции ' at the station', на фабрике 'at the factory'
(b) with certain parts of a ship: на корме 'in the stern', на носу 'in the prow', на палубе 'on the deck'
(c) with certain parts of a university: на кафедре химии 'in the
chemistry department', на филологическом факультете 'in the
faculty of philology'
(d) with certain parts of buildings (including theatres): на
крыльце 'in the porch', на чердаке 'in the attic', на втором этаже 'on the first floor'; на балконе 'in the balcony', на галёрке/райке 'in the gallery /the gods', на ярусе 'in the circle'

(m) miscellaneous: на курорте 'at a health resort', на орбите 'in orbit', на расстоянии 'at a distance', на родине 'in the homeland'

Note: На combines with the prepositional case of место to denotemotion lessness (стоять на месте 'to stand still'), possession (Ты сидишь на моём месте 'You are sitting in my place'), previous location (Машины стояли на прежнем месте 'The cars were parked where they were before'), conduct (на вашем месте 'if I were you'), priority (на третьем месте – экономические условия ' In third place are economic conditions').
►Other uses of на + prepositional case
На also combines with the prepositional case of nouns that denote:
(a) transport: ехать на поезде (or поездом) 'to travel by train' (also ехать на лифте 'to take a lift', лететь на самолёте 'to go by
plane'. ехать на велосипеде 'to go by bicycle').

Note that в is also used with 'being inside' some vehicles (В машине ехало трое'There were three passengers travelling in the car'), though not with ships, thus: плыть на пароходе 'to go by steamer'
(b) support: кататься на коньках 'to skate', ходить на лыжах 'to
ski'
(c) state, condition: Он на пенсии 'He has retired', на ранней
стадии 'at an early stage', Он на военной службе 'He is on military
service'
(d) climatic features: сидеть на солнце 'to sit in the sun'
(e) language: он говорит на двух языках 'he speaks two languages'
(f) time: на прошлой неделе 'last week' ►Verbs that take на + prepositional case
Among verbs that take на + prepositional case are играть 'to
play' (играть на скрипке 'to play the violin'), жениться 'to marry' (of a man: Он женился на моей сестре 'He married my sister').

193 ►The preposition о + prepositional caseО + prepositional case denotes
(a) the object of thought processes (,about, concerning, of'):
думать о 'to think about', напоминать/напомнить о 'to remind
or, мечта о 'a dream of, помнить/вс– о 'to remember about', упоминать/упомянуть о 'to mention'
(b) the object of requests: просьба о деньгах 'a request for money', призыв о помощи 'an appeal for help'
(c) the object of concern: забота о деревьях 'concern for trees',
заботиться о детях 'to care for the children'

Note: (a) the preposition о also takes the accusative case, in the meaning'against', see page 204.
(b) о is spelt об before words starting with а, э. и. о, у, and обо in the phrases обо всём/обо всех 'about everything/about everyone', обо мне 'about me'.
►The preposition по + prepositional case
По + prepositional case combines mainly with verbal nouns in
the meaning 'on, after', and is characteristic of official styles:
по окончании университета on graduating
по полученни визы on receipt of the visa
по егосмерти on his death По прибытии в город он взял такси
On arrival in the town, he took a taxi

Note: По also takes the dative case in the meaning 'along' (see page 213) andthe accusative in the meaning 'up to and including' (see page 204).
►The preposition при + prepositional case
При + prepositional case has the following meanings:
(a) 'attached to (an organization) ': при уннверснтете есть
поликлиника 'there is a polyclinic attached to the university'
(b) 'in the presence of: Она сказала это при свидетелях 'She said
that in the presence of witnesses'; при лампе 'by lamplight' (c) 'during the lifetime of': при отце/при жизни отца 'in father's
(life) time'
(d) 'under a social/political system, a ruler': при социализме 'under socialism', при Хрущёве 'under Khrushchev, in
Khrushchev's time'
(e) 'proximity': при впадении Волги в Каспий 'where the Volga joins the Caspian'
(f) 'on, during, at' (mainly with verbal nouns and with words
denoting perception – звук 'sound', вид 'sight', мысль 'thought') : при взлёте 'on, during take–off', при виде крови 'at the sight of
blood', при звуке звонка 'at the sound of the bell', прн мысли о
неудаче at the thought of failure'
(g) 'at (an opportunity) ': при первой/при каждой возможности ' at the first/at every opportunity'
(h) 'in (circumstances)': при каких обстоятельствах его
приняли в институт? 'In what cireumstances was he accepted for
the institute?'
(i) 'at (a temperature)': при ста градусах (при температуре в сто
градусов) 'at 100 degrees'
(j) 'despite': при всём желании 'with the best will in the world'
